Question:

I know that Alembic won't generally put a Stanley Small body with a long scale neck because of the balance problems.

I've got a Stanley Standard Deluxe (30.5 scale), and it's great. However, since I'm still more comfortable with 33-34 scale basses I was wondering if Alembic has ever put a small body shape with that scale length---but made the body proportionally larger in area/volume to offset the balance issue.

If the answer is no then I figured this question would more appropriately go under this Dreaming thread.

It's all about where the upper strap button is. It's hard to imagine a scaled up Small Standard body with the horn up enough to come close to balancing in a 34 scale. It won't be small!

I've seen someone around that made a metal extension bar to go from the strap pin (positioned on the upper horn instead of on the back of the heel) up about 6 inches on a short scale Stanley Clarke model. Something like that might make sense in order to keep everything in proportion. Just a thought.

yes mica
the bolin/ns(steinbergers) have a metal arm that swivels out from the upper horn to offset the neck dive.
i was looking at them but they are 35inch scale and that turned me off to them
i think the website is bolinguitars. seen some on ebay being sold by their distributor

That's not what I was remembering. I distinctly recall an Alembic owner rigging up something on a Small Standard body shape. It was more like a rod extension from the straplock. I'll try to find that (I think it was on the Club).

It's another important consideration that many feel the standard short scale Small Standard bodies are neck heavy.

HMMM I thinkin that might put a lot of strain on the bout considering how deep you might have to drill to secure the rod... here is the bolin design... for the heck of it

I think Mica is talking about the same thing Freekbass uses..

No idea what he sounds like but he's a friend of Bootsy. I don't like the look of the extension - looks like it could rip the wood if you put too much strain on it.
