Hi Mica,
Last week I bought an old series-1 from 1977 ser nr. 778. Can you tell me some more about this bass, what kind of wood the top is?
I'm very very very happy with it!

Here's what's in the file:

top: Myrtle
core: Cherry
back: Myrtle
neck: Maple and Purpleheart, 34 scale
fingerboard: Ebony with mother of pearl ovals
peghead veneers: Vermilion
originally built to: Musik Bertrum
birthday: July 27, 1977

I can't say I've ever seen a peghead joint quite as extreme as this one before. I asked mom, and she doesn't either. There is an usually large number of veneers on the back of the peghead as shown in your other photos. There isn't any notation in the file about it, but the information is scant, recorded on a samll 3x5 card at the time.

I'll add that I think this bass has been refinished. It's just not possible for the Maple neck to remain this color given the coatings we were using in 1977. Maybe a peghead repair and a refinish were done at the same time? The quality of the work looks nice from the photographs, and you're happy with it, and that's all that really matters.

Hi Mica, I can't find any trace of a repair job, it is one piece top to bottom. I think this bass hasn't been played much, there are hardly any scratches on the back or the electronics cover. And the original frets show no wear. Thank you for taking the time to look up the file on this bass, indeed I am very happy with it even if it was refinished. Marc

I've contacted Rick Turner and he said they did do a few pegheads like this.

Do the stamped numbers on both sides of the peghead point get truncated by the back veneers, or are the partially on top of them? I can't quite tell in your photo, and I also can't see the marking on the left side. Another refinishing clue is the numbers - if they are filled with finish, then it's likely been done. In 1977, the numbers were stamped after the coating.

they are keepers for life, but you can buy more Alembic

Here some pic's of the stamped numbers. They are partially on top of the veneers. But Rick also confirmed that the veneers are original. The numbers are under the finish, does this mean it's refinished? Thanx David, it is a keeper!!!!!!!!!
