I'm starting this thread in the hope that others may learn from my loss. On Aug 12, 2006 my 5 string Epic was taken after a local gig here in Denver. As the song goes you don't know what you've got until it's gone. I'd played the Epic for about 11 years but had never placed my name and address, phone #, etc. in the bass or case. Duhhh! Even if someone wanted to return it they couldn't.

As expensive as Alembics are, it might be a good idea to put a locator chip in them as an option through Alembic. Mica, has anyone ever looked into this? And everyone, register your serial # and attach identification to your bass.

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm in Denver too (Parker) and will put the word out to everyone I know in the music scene to be on the lookout for it. Have you notfied the main music stores and pawn shops? You never know if someone might walk in one day to try and get a prices, sell it, or have work done to it. I think I saw a post in Westword about an Alembic being stolen. Best wishes, and I think your idea of an implanted chip is a good one.

Ouch thats gonna be a hard one to get over. I hope somehow it gets returned to you. I had a break in at my home last year and fortunately none of my instruments were stolen. But I like your idea of an embedded chip. I know here in the UK they have chips that are injected into the back of the neck of dogs so their owners can be traced. So i guess the technology is there to have a chip embedded into the body of a new alembic. Not sure how an after purchase one could be done. I'm gonna look up that idea.

Jazzy, that owner's chip for pets requires that you run a detector over it from a few inches away. We need a trackable GPS chip like what they're sticking in cell phones these days. I bet a thief wouldn't even notice it if it were in the control cavity of an Alembic. I would stick it in the battery cavity for the LEDs in my bass and power it from there.

Another alternative for the gig situation is a child proximity alarm. You stick a small alarm in your pocket that goes off if the gadget connected to your child gets too far away from you. Since many think of their Alembics almost as if they were children, it seems kind of appropriate...

How about LoJack?

It is about the size of a deck of playing cards.

Could be fit into the LED battery tray maybe?

That would replace all the batteries in the LED battery tray. A deck of cards is pretty big in install-it-in-your-bass terms.

what i did twenty yrs ago was ENGRAVED my personal information in the cavity of my alembic so if it ever gets lost i could let the athouritys know exactly whats inside & where it is,plus my bass looks like no other alembic so that helps too,,so that would be a good idea for ALL alembic owners as well as your other guitars too!

YEP!!!...
