Long shot here ... my Dead band, Playin' Dead, has a gig booked for Saturday, 4-16 in Portland, Maine ... our bass player can't make it so we're trying to find someone (excellent) to sit in, who knows the material and wants to have some fun. C'mon, help me make some more cash for the Alembic I want to build :-)

Take a look at www.knotbuzz.com and see if John Brigham is available. The Knot (formerly known as Slipknot until the clowns came along) have been a regionally popular Dead-ish band for most of 30 years. If he isn't available, he may be able to hook you up with the right guy. If you're local and into that style of music, you must have heard of them and/or seen them a time or two.

John's a great player and a great guy ... I've actually sat in on guitar with The Knot at Harper's before. Unfortunately, he can't make the gig this time out ... but thanks for the tip!

Well, between those guys, they probably know everyone in the area that would be up to it. If John couldn't play or make you a recommendation, I think you're going to need some luck. So, good luck!

I'm sorry, I'm in the process of putting together a new band and only know about a set of Dead at the moment (which only requires 6-8 tunes in vintage Dead style). It is a lot of fun to play it with good musicians and I will expand my repertoire in case the opportunity comes up again after the summer.

I have to get out and catch The Knot, too. Current Knot guitarist Perry Seigle was my bandmate for about 10 years before he got the opportunity to step up to the big time. They haven't been playing as much of late, which is why I thought John might be available.

John said he'd love to do the gig, but he's got a wedding to go to that day. We may have found someone from NY (a fellow Alembic afficiando) willing to come up for the show. But we're booking a lot more gigs and there's always the chance we'll need someone down the road, so Bob, we can do a 90 minute Dark Star -> The Other One for the first set, and then The Other One -> Dark Star for the second ;-)

Seriously, c'mon out sometime, I think you'll like what you hear and we'd love to have you sit in.

went really well bob
great guys - we had a lot of fun. unfortunately my printer broker down and i was unable to bring some of the tunes vic and the boys like to doi- but we faked it.
they were very upfront about my technigues as such and i was totally blown away when the SECOND drummer showed up- i hadnt noticed it in their pics. so i was in hog heaven. playing with a 4 piece band and sitting in with a 6 piece group was a bit of a change for me and likewise means to tweaking on my part to blend in. but this was discussed afterwards with vic and myself and we have an understanding. so ifn they need me in a pinch? they said i am da man.,,, vic is an excellent guitar player..as are all the guys -where it goes from there is up to god. lol
we did a really good china/rider, scarlet, truckin/nobody's fault and a wonderful slow fotd,which is always the way i like to play it.
faked a shakedown and eyes and for the very first time i did not hear phil's solo from wotf in my head, so i finally did my own. the setup they had for me presented some problems as i am not fond of 15 speakers by themselves, but i found a nook in the room where i could hear myself better. the night ended too soon. to me? the 4 or 5 times i fell into vics riffs etc meant its a good thing.and me and tony the drummer were exchanging nods all night.now i need to convince them i need a test run when the wolf is ready

i was very nervous at first- we found a way to chill out...an this was the first time i sat in with strangers who played what i like to play. so i was feeling pretty good

Always a challenge to change the composition of a band. Even the same number and type of instruments with different players can call for different tone and technique. The nature of musicians that play Dead tunes is such that it is bound to work out, though. You can't play that style of music without being able to hear what's going on and adapt. The challenge of listening and adapting to new players always makes for a fun time, and doing it on stage must make it more intense.

Glad it was worth the trip. That must have been a haul to get there and back. Most of the gigs they play seem to be around Boston, so you should have a better commute if you get another opportunity.

Also, if you get your hands on any recordings, post them somewhere for us. It's always fun to listen to interpretations of Dead tunes.
