Hello Mica and Val,

Now I purchase the bass 76' 421.
Please let me know the build record.
Now the bass is fretless.
But I think it was fretted as born.
And more, nut was replaced to adjustable type.
These work were done your factory or not ?

I just looked this one up for someone else yesterday, small world.

It was born as a fretted instrument as far as I can tell. Nut & bridge were replaced in 1983 at the factory.

1976 5 string medium scale series bass
Rosewood top & back
rosewood fretboard
koa body
maple/padauk(vermillion) neck
Schaller tuners
mother of pearl oval inlays

That's it.

Hi Val,

Thank you for your quick info.
Now the bass is reserved for me.
I am waiting for shipping details.

Wow, the bass has rosewood top and back !
I think it is cocobolo, but colour and swirl are different.

I have never seen Koa body.
How's the sound ?

Did you work fretted to fretless at your factory ?

Hello Eiji,

no, the bass was not converted to fretless at the factory. In regards to the sound, I can't help you there, I haven't had much experience with 30-year old koa bodies.

Eiji; Koa bodies aren't too unusual in that many of the early Spoilers had solid Koa bodies.
In the Showcase section check out this one.

Hey room037 I was having that bass transfered to guitar center in richmond today. That bass has been there for 2 and a half years. And now two people went for it. Good buy man. Congrats.

Koa is very similar in sound to mahogany as they are similar woods but koa has more of a singing tone to my ears.  I wouldn't suggest making it into acoustic guitars however.  It's prettier than mahogany, and a 30 year old body has got to have some singing characteristics.  With a rosewood top and back you will enjoy it greatly...if the string spacing wasn't so tight though...

Hi John,

Thank you for your info. about Koa sound.
The singing tone is very interested.

The string spacing is so tight.
This 70's spec is out of date.
But my extended bass career was started with Tune TB-06 (6 strings bass).
It has very tight spacing just like 70's Alembic.
It is my standard.
If I order new 5 or 6 strings bass, I will choice same spec.
