More stage rig foolishness
« on: May 27, 2025, 04:54:42 PM »
been a little slow around here, so i thought i'd post up.
so we got rained out of our first show on memorial weekend.  since i had a little time before our next show i decided to deal with the stage rig.  i had been growing increasingly unhappy with the sound of my stage rig - a powered markbass 1x15 with a separately powered 2x10 on top.  i wanted something i could bi-amp for the mono basses and capable of full stereo for the SII that was lightweight and had plenty of oomph for small to medium sized gigs where my stage volume would be unaided by the PA.
i have never been happy with the sound of that 2x10 - too weak to handle my B and E strings, too harsh sounding to be a decent midrange driver, just a terrible sounding cab no matter what i did with it.  since my bandmates want to hear me bring the thump, i gave the 2x10 to our guit@r player to do whatever with and i got a PJB 2x5 cab to take its place.
i cannot say enough good things about that PJB cab.  the difference was startling to say the least, to the point where everyone in the band noticed it.  since all the 1x15 has to do is thump, it gets to stay.  i can finally get at least as good sound out of my stage rig as i can out of my home rig without breaking my back on load-ins.  i dunno if i'd go PJB all the way, but if you want a good, clear midrange driver in a bi-amp or stereo situation for aboot $300 USD, then this is the shizzle, homie!
shown here with the pretty bass. it sounds *really* impressive with the SII in stereo.  maybe next gig.

I have used a PJB Briefcase 2x5 100w since the mid year 2000 and it is a great unit. I have done small gigs on bass with band that used acoustic guitars drums and vocals and it is great. Incidentally it is great with an acoustic guitar too. I have an AAD Cub 100 Acoustic Guitar Amplifer by Phil Jones, and bi amped the briefcase on the neck pickup and AAD on bridge using a series bass at home volume sounds so sweet.
The sound of Alembic is medicine for the soul!
