The Jim Irsay collection will be displayed at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on December 10th for free. Lots of musical, historical, and sports memorabilia, including instruments that belonged to, among others, Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison. Sports stuff from Muhammed Ali, Jackie Robinson and others. There will also be a concert by the Jim Irsay band and John Fogerty, Buddy Guy, and Anne Wilson. And the tickets are FREE while they last! Get them at jimirsaycollection.com. I assume there will be some interest around here for the music collection. Maybe we can arrange a mini Alembic gathering at the event.

Hey Bill... did you end up going? Here is the first "review" I have read about the event. A couple of friends may have gone but so far no feedback from them.

I threw out my back Friday night and spent the weekend laying down and eating ibuprofen. Thanks for posting the review so I know what I missed. This aging thing can really suck sometimes, but it sure beats the alternative!

Sorry to hear about your back Bill, mine has been bad since the first time I threw it out in the mid-80s. I made the mistake of bending over too quickly to pick up something heavy... never got to the picking up point. Heal soon...

I went! A few photos below. I just went to see the exhibition; I was in a bit of a hurry and didn't stay for the music. Although now I kind of wish I had, because I found out that they played the John McVie stainless-steel-fretboard Alembic for a cover of "The Chain", i.e. the actual one that played the bass break on the studio track. I had no idea they had it there.

The one big reason I went there was to see Tiger, which was indeed awesome. The exhibition area was crowded all over, but Tiger seemed to be the biggest single "draw" of all of the exhibition items. Possibly because it had a hometown advantage here in SF - there were a LOT of attendees who were pretty obviously Dead fans. One guy right in front of me just stood directly in front of Tiger and stared at it wordlessly for a good 5 minutes, before finally moving on.

In all seriousness - it was great to see so many people who know what it is, and got a lot of enjoyment out of seeing it.

Other highlights (for me) were David Gilmour's Black Strat, Kurt Kobain's Mustang from the Smells Like Teen Spirit music video, and 3 (or maybe 4?) Les Paul "Bursts" in a row. Also Ringo's bass drum head from the Ed Sullivan show appearance. Pretty amazing collection.
