Happy Birthday to Norman Blake; 85 today
« on: March 10, 2023, 09:23:28 AM »
We've all got our guitar heroes, and Norman's been my biggest one as long as I can remember. I'll have to take a rusty rip at a couple of his tunes when I get home this evening.

Thanks for the heads up Greg! One of my most musically fateful purchases was buying Norman's first LP "Back Home in Sulphur Springs" way back in 1972. Norman has been a perennial favorite ever since. Been a while since I have played (poorly at best) any of his songs, may be a good day to pull out my Martin and take a whack in his honor. Happy Birthday Norman!

I starting revering Norman way back when I was but a pup, due his work in Kristofferson's band & in the Dobrolic Plectral Society (for those not aware, just as the Planet Earth Rock-'N'-Roll Orchestra's sessions became Crosby's first album, the DPS's work was released as Hartford's Aereo-Plain, which has been on my "Desert Island Albums" list since I first heard it - which coincided with my first psychedelic experience:  "Whoa! What was THAT?" queried my blown young mind!).  My respect has only grown with each new thing I've heard; what an artist!

Happy birthday and many more, Mr. Blake!

I forgot that Blake played on John Hartford's wonderful Aereo-Plain, along with Vassar Clemens, Randy Scruggs, and Tut Taylor.   Produced by David Bromberg, many consider the album to be the birth of Newgrass.  Happy Birthday, Mr. Blake.
