If i'm standing next to my bass rig without playing anything, hands on the strings to mute them, and just hearing a little background hiss from my rig then turn to face the speaker with my bass and get a loud feedback squeal as the bass gets closer to the speakers am i right to assume that it confirms microphonic pickup(s)?

I used to get that but only with a fEARful cab. It was a really insane blast and made it impossible to get controlled feedback. I never figured out exactly what the culprit was but have moved on from the fEARful.

I discovered something today which may also be relevant to vintage basses having a squealing issue from the rotating the filter knob. i say relevant because i found it epeatable and solveable ,so it can be one more thing to check if you experience. I opened the back of my control cavity, which has the PF card and control knobs in a single cavity and when i put the cover back on and played, the squeal appeared but this time the frequency changed with knob position. However on the second half of travel there was a lovely warm frequency dependent raspy synth like sound that wouldn't be out of place on something by Jean-Michel Jarre, early Chick Corea or Kraftwerk. 👍🏾😂. When i opened up the cavity again i noticed the pickup connecters must have been in contact with the back of the pots or some other exposed wire. After putting Insulation tape over the connectors, all back to normal. I tried it a couple of times off and on and the issue is repeatable. i recorded sample which i will drop on to soundcloud so you can enjoy the vibe. 🥳. Hopefully no damage will have occurred.
The sound of Alembic is medicine for the soul!

kinda sounds like what's going on with my wayward exploiter.  i've been waiting for winter weather to arrive to the mile high city (was out in bike shorts and a jersey in 65° winter sunshine yesterday) so i can huddle indoors and spend some time to track it down and kill it.  if i turn the tone knob i get a nice sine wave oscillation that varies in pitch from about 2kHz to the ultrasonic as i turn the knob from stop to stop.  i was actually gonna post a video of me playing it that way on my youtube channel and call it "Terrible Tim Tries to Tune In Tokyo".  i may get baked over christmas break and do it since it doesn't look like it's gonna snow here this winter
Been down...now i'm out!
