Alembic Orion 6 string
« on: February 20, 2021, 08:55:05 AM »
Hi all. I just found this forum. I’m thinking about an Alembic for my next purchase and found a six string Orion fretless for sale. The guy wants almost $4000 for it. I found another one that sold for $1900 and a third that sold for $2300. The one I’m looking at is a 1999, the $1900 one was a 1997 and the $2300 one was a 1997 I believe.
The one I’m looking at comes with an original case which the owner says is worth $600. I can’t find any definitive info on value for this bass and case. I was told to come here. What say you?

Hey CM... welcome to the club. IMO the asking price for this bass is too high. Used set-neck Alembics, like the Orion, generally sell for less than the neck-through models. The two lower prices you quoted are much more in the ballpark. The bass you are considering looks quite nice but it has also been modified, another reason the price seems out of line to me. Personally, I do not see the value of the case when it was new to be much of a selling point.

I’d have to agree with Steven on that bass. If your interested in a fretted 6 string, I have a very nice maple neck-through Europa that I’d sell you for less than $4,000. Somewhere in the $1,800-$2,100 range would seem like a fair price for what you are looking at. For $4000 you can often find older but very nice Series I basses.

Thanks for the replies. I thought it was too much. I wish I could find something in a six fretless that was priced right. I sold a bunch of my Basses and am trying to pare down to just a few. I have a six string fretted Fodera and don’t feel like I need another fretted. My last fretted bass aside from it was a Roscoe SKB six string. I really didn’t want to sell it at all. I priced it for a few hundred over what I paid because subconsciously I didn’t want to sell it. But someone bought it right away. I considered refunding the money and keeping it. But I decided to let it go. Now that it’s gone, I’m ok and realize I’m fine with just the fodera. Now I just need a fretless and I think I’ll be all set.
I considered buying a Wal but that amount of money was just too much. Then I thought about a Carl Thompson but same thing-just more than I wanted to spend on another bass. Kinda splurged on the fodera and don’t really want to do it again. So I’ve been looking to keep it under at least $4-$5k.

If you are patient that kind of cash could get you a Series I or a newer Europa, Rogue, or Signature. At the least you should be able to find a through neck.

(I know I'm hitting an old thread... but...)

If you're looking for a six-string fretless Orion, it shouldn't cost anywhere near $4k. I have one that needs a new home for a lot less than that.
