Grace Design Felix
« on: May 15, 2021, 04:48:28 AM »
While waiting for an SF-2 to come along, I purchased a Grace Design Felix (not Felix2).

I’ve been reading about the Felix.  Is channel 1 just for a mic?

Can you use both channels for instruments?

With separate outputs for each pickup on a Series bass, I was hoping to send each output to separate channels in the Felix, then use the mix control to combine the two for output to the amp. That way I could EQ each pickup separately.

Any insight on the Felix channels would be appreciated…thanks!  :)

OK, a little more searching and I think I found the answer.   Channel 2 is line input, so instrument input.  Channel 1 has a mic or line input selection, so channel 2 can also accommodate an instrument input.  So, I can plug each pickup into separate channels on the Felix, then combine the channels for a single output.  Should be nice to be able to mix each pickup separately through one small preamp.

Both sides can accommodate instrument inputs (and if you use an instrument with phantom power via a TRS connector, it will do that at various voltages, as well as the mic input which will do a full 48v).

I used my Felix (Serial #4!) for mixing a series bass a lot and it works very well (although the gain isn't quite the same on both channels as they are optimized for different types of inputs, but it doesn't really matter because the bridge pickup has less output anyway). It's super flexible and the sound quality is fantastic.

I've also used it from the individual outputs of an F2B. At some point, I want to look into the 2nd version, as it has stereo FX loops, probably because I have been bugging them about that since the first one came out.

It's a veritable audio swiss army knife! Let me know if you have any more questions about it!

Thanks for the feedback, Edwin, that will get me started.  It’s in transit now, so I’m sure I’ll have questions when I receive it and start working through it.  I didn’t see that they recently came out with Felix2 until after I bought the Felix, but I’m sure with will cover everything I need. Should be fun!

Well, I received the Felix and really like it, just wish it was a rack mount…I might talk to them about that.

Before I got the Felix (actually, before it was even a thing), I used their channel strip. It's seriously amazing, 1 space rack mount. Of course, it doesn't have all of the functions that the Felix has, but it's the most transparent sounding preamp I've ever used. After the Felix came out, I switched over because I needed stereo and couldn't afford two of the channel strips. It's also nice to have local control over volume going to the amp.

Thanks, Edwin, I will check it out.  I like what the Felix does and that it has two Chanels, but would like to avoid carrying a power amp and the Felix, and avoid having to bend over to adjust things due to my back. I was thinking of getting a Quilter bass block and just use the power amp section of it with the Felix.  That would keep it compact, light weight, and they would both fit on top of my speaker cab.  I will experiment a little.

That sounds like a great idea! I did that for a tour a couple of years ago. Worked out great. I could eq the speaker separately from my send to the PA.
