1977 pickup issue series bass
« on: June 23, 2018, 09:45:56 AM »
My just purchased 1977 series one bass is sounding great, but the bridge pickup is cutting in and out----if I flex or push hard on the pickup housing it will sometimes start working again--also, if I tighten the upper pickup screws down a bit it will sometimes start to work--I plugged the bridge pickup into the neck pickup connector on the card and it acts the same and still cuts out. I plugged the neck pickup into the bridge card input and it works fine. So it is the pickup and not the card. The wire into the pickup and card looks and acts fine. How can I find a 70's bridge pickup? It sounds like an open ground in the pickup until I flex the housing and then it will start fully working again until the pickup is touched or vibrated which makes it cut out. It doesn't cut out completely it just makes a loud hum with a vague output.

Hey, Keith-

I thought I read in a 2006 thread about Alembic 76-399 (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=6325.msg67543#msg67543) that stated matched replacement pickups could be cast in the original molds if the customer so desired it.  You might call Alembic to inquire whether this option is still available and what would be the lead time for a pair of retro pickups, or even if they have what you are looking for on hand...assuming you haven't already done so.  Good luck, dude!

Hi, Keith,

It's the best solution I could think of/remember; I don't know anything about cost or lead time for production.  I wish I had seen auctions for sets of series 1 pickups lately, but I have not for a while.  Good luck with it, man.  Keep wearing the flair!
