73-39 Bass
« on: March 28, 2018, 10:32:53 PM »
Hi,
I'm interested in the 73-39 bass. Wondering if the owner would be interested in selling it?
If so I would like to make an offer.
Any info and help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Keith

Hi, Keith,

I don't know if it helps at all, but I can only see that his marvel was sold on Reverb about 4 years ago (https://reverb.com/item/133359-alembic-series-i-bass-1973-natural) and the seller, Gothic City Guitars in Staten Island, N.Y, might be able to place a call on your behalf to the person who bought 73-39 from them to advance what I was able to see on Google, where the last transaction was the original Reverb sale (https://reverb.com/shop/gothiccityguitars; http://www.gothiccityguitars.com/).  Maybe this might get you another name or another number so you can float an offer; it's New York, you never know.  There's a thread on this site from 2015 about this bass that references the original Reverb transaction and some discussion/history and another thread about it comes up (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=10748.msg124319#msg124319 ).  I kinda figure you know all of this.  Sorry couldn't do anything but suggest you call the guys in Staten Island to get another bit of data.

Good luck with your efforts, 73-39 surely is pretty and one of the Ox's basses, so I can understand the allure.

Cheers!

Hi Zut8083,

I texted/emailed Gothic about it and await a response from them.

Thanks for all.

There's a special place in my heart for #73-39... that's the Dragon that got away.  :'(

So Mica & Co. built #14588 for me.  :D

See the family resemblance?

Hi, Keith,

I was thinking about finding 73-39 a bit more; could you post an inquiry on Reverb, or on another bass forum, like that which you have posted here: an intent to make a solid offer on #73-39, and float that to see if someone responds to it, while asking for confirmation of the genuine article to avoid a scam.  My issue with this suggestion is that I can't think what that discriminating "fingerprint" might be, presently other than the Ox's fading signature on the top, the exact topology of the wood on the top, back, and peghead veneer, the Who Tour decal, and a picture of the stamped serial number on the headstock, something that you can ask to be verified against potential records, maybe.  But someone could fake some or all of these with photoshop, and I don't personally know how to scan filters through photoshop to find inconsistencies in the image, if they show up.  I also don't know if Alembic can provide certain details relevant to the bass's current condition or location, but I would assume the board should be able to weigh in and help you out with sussing out if a response is a legitimate one.

Although this so-called "plan" is a little riskier than simply finding the owner yourself, using JAWS as an analogy, it's easier on you, potentially, by bringing the "shark" to you rather than searching for the "shark" in open water.  The trick is you just have to know how to reel in the right shark.  I just dunno quite how to do that 100% safely without you possibly getting jipped.  But, maybe it will work even if the owner may be hard to discover, and false positives might spring up.  Caveat Emptor, aside, you are in good company (not me) to suss out whether something real shows up, and I think you'll need a bigger practice space.

Cheers!

Hi,

Thanks for the ideas. Fortunately, the bass has been at Alembic and restored. The signature is removed and the bass is in original shape--which is what I like. The Who connection/provenance couldn't be proven, and, that isn't my interest in it anyway; I just really like that bass. I will wait for any response from Gothic, and then be a little more proactive if necessary. I really appreciate your ideas-- I was very, very close to buying it when up for sale from Gothic, but the electronics being untested made me pause; you snooze, you lose--lol. But I will be hopeful and be on the lookout for another medium scale '73.
