WTB - a pair of Fatboy pickups for a 4 string
« on: January 23, 2018, 01:39:38 PM »
Like the title says, looking to buy a pair of Fatboy pickups for my Spoiler 4 string. Might consider trading them for the AXY4 pickups they are meant to replace.

Are you sure you want a pair. I think jazzyvee experimented with two on one of his basses and went back to the original PU configuration of only one fanboy.

I went from two AXY's to two FatBoys, and knowing what I heard, I am certain I did the right thing for me.  The AXY's are fine, but ultimately they were a little to dry sounding, and once I traded both, it . . . . came . . . . . alive ! ! !

A few years back, club member 0vid very kindly lent me one Fatboy, which I tested in both positions, paired with an AXY, and to me that worked best with the Fatboy at the bridge as the added oomph in the neck position overpowered the bridge AXY,. So in the end I too preferred a pair of AXYs. Flash forward, and these days I have a Series bass, and the oodles of oomph from a pair of wide aperture pickups is just addictive. The neck recipe contribites a little something too, but in comparison the AXYs sound a little anaemic, so I'm less inclined to play the Spoiler, which is a shame.

Note to management:  IF the Activator line is ever updated, FatBoys in MusicMan shells would kill, and be EXACTLY the Big Medicine to jack up a StingRay.

I did try one fatboy in the bridge position first then aftewards in the neck position. Later I went back to the standard pickups. I found the fatboy to be good but not as clean sounding as the standard AXY's. Actually I only tried one. The other pickup was made for me offset with the innards closer to the upper edge of the casing so closer to the truss rod cavity than a standard pickup. It gives a richer bass but for now. I'm back to standard and when I'm gigging more with that bass I will take the opportunity to give them a better airing.
