Shipping from UK back to the Mothership
« on: June 23, 2017, 09:11:40 AM »
Hi everyone,

So, I'm finally looking to have the upgrade done to my old '81 Series 2.

Could anyone give me any pointers on the best way to go about getting it from the United Kingdom back to the mothership?

Knowing the UK Government, I'm sure there are taxes that are to be paid but not sure what and why.

Any advice very welcome!
Many thanks
James

There should be no taxes from the US side of things although there might be some customs fees. I know documenting the instrument with the shipper ensuring that the same value is used for return is very important.

Here's what I was able to find for the UK VAT rules. I can't vouch for its accuracy:

No duty and VAT will be payable if the goods have been repaired free of charge and you can provide a copy of the guarantee/warranty agreement to your shipping provider for presentation to customs.

If you have to pay for the repair, duty and VAT will be charged on the repair costs only.
If the goods have been replaced free of charge under guarantee or warranty, no duty is payable.  However, VAT is payable on the full value of the goods because all replacement items are treated as new goods for VAT purposes.
