Looking for a Comparable Bass String
« on: June 02, 2016, 01:44:54 PM »
For quite a long time I've been using Thomastic-Infeld JR346 strings.  They are wonderful strings.  The feel under my fingers and the quality of the sound are great; and they last a long time.

However, Thomastic does not offer a choice of single strings; and I would like to experiment with some different gauges for two of the strings on my six string bass.  Thus, I'm looking for a string that:

  • feels just like a Thomastic Jazz Round
  • has a sound quality similar to the Jazz Rounds
  • is offered in a wide selection of individual string gauges
  • and, hopefully, lasts a long time, both the quality of sound and the string itself
Any suggestions?

Dave, I've been able to buy single Thomastik-Infeld guitar strings from http://m.juststrings.com/thomastikinfeldelectricbassguitarnickelroundwound.html

Might be worth a call to see if they would break up a bass set.

Breaking up a set wouldn't do me any good, as the Jazz Rounds only come in one size.

Ah, I see... misunderstood your query.  (I think it was you actually, that turned me onto the Jazz Rounds)

Nothing firsthand, since I've stuck with them ever since, but here's what their description claims, in case someone else does.

Description

Thomastik-Infeld has developed this unique sounding string constructed with a similar design to it's Jazz Flat Wound counterpart but with the round wound sound.  T-I Jazz Round Wound outer wrap is a small diameter Nickel Alloy winding which adds more bite to their upright style tone without the typical round wound excessive string squeak and premature fret wear.  Thomastik-Infeld has designed these Jazz Round Wound strings with lower tension and gauging to increase ease of playability and to reduce strain on the instruments neck without sacrificing the strings output.

Construction:
Small Diameter Nickel Alloy Round Wound
Round Steel Core

EDIT- there's a couple posts in this TalkBass thread comparing them to various DR sets... https://www.talkbass.com/threads/thomastik-infeld-jazz-rounds.622601/page-3

I still get excessive squeaking, but I think that's due to poor technique.   :)
