Just bought a '96 Epic fretless 5-string, and I'm curious about the top wood.  It's not a close match to any of the wood sample photos, although it's most similar to cocobolo.  Thanks!

Hi John… congratulations on your new bass and welcome to the club! You will find tons of info here about all things Alembic. If you haven’t read them the FAQs and Must Reads are a good place to start any research.

The history request lookups are usually done in batches when Mica has time so you may have to wait a bit to get all the details about your instrument. Meanwhile if you post a few pictures someone here should be able to help identify the top wood and spot anything truly unique about the build. There are size limits on posting pictures, this may be helpful if you wish to try...

"First reduce the physical size; the maximum height is 1,200 pixels and the maximum width is also 1200 pixels.  Next is reducing the file size; the maximum file size if 500kB, and no more than 10 attachments per post”.

Looks a lot like like a Wenge top. Nice!

Yes looks like wenge -  I have the same bass with a 97 serial.  Completely awesome fretless - such a lovely plank of ebony.  Definitely bats well above it's price.

Thanks folks!  There wasn't a wenge sample on the wood sample page.  Maybe it's an option they offered back in the nineties?  I had a Warwick that was partially wenge.  Nice bass, but I sold it about 15 minutes after I bought a fretted Epic last year.

Fellow forum members have kindly provided the info I was looking for, so I want to withdraw my serial number search request.  I don't see any way to delete the original request, and I don't want to use up people's time to no purpose.
