Can anyone ID the fingerboard wood on this Alembic on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=922454893 ?

It doesn't look like rosewood, and it doesn't look like ebony.

Thank!

It certainly doesn't look like Rosewood or Pau Ferro.  It looks like Macassar Ebony.  This type of Ebony is sometimes referred to as Striped Ebony ... characterized by dark and light stripes.  I believe that it has all the same properties as the black Gabon Ebony (Density & Weight).  The only difference is its color.

The file indicates Ebony - and also that this a rare 34 scale with a Small Standard body.  That combination is one of the few things we won't make anymore. You can see from the photos at least one hole where someone attempted to improve the balance, which really isn't possible without extending the upper horn.

I have owned 2 Small Standard bodied Alembics with the 34 inch scale length.  I never noticed a balance problem!
