Is there any way to buy a 70's Alembic with the external power supply, and have the preamp retrofitted to run on batteries instead?
(I'm assuming the power supply powers the pre,am I correct?)

or would u have to change the pre altogether?

it seems like a big pain to plug in before gigs,
..although I'm sure most players would consider my idea sacreligious, since a mod like that kills the collectability

..but well, if his is the case, could the preamp be changed cleanly to a modern, battery type and then, if I ever sell, could replace the original preamp cleanly?

The external power supply is not required.  Series instruments are pre-wired to run on two 9 volt batteries.  However, they run through batteries very fast and you'll probably want to put fresh batteries in before every gig.

Also, you'll of course be using the quarter inch jack instead of the five pin jack.  Most of the early Series instruments have a stereo quarter inch jack; thus, you'll need an appropriate quarter inch cable.  For instructions on wiring a stereo quarter inch cable, go here.  For instructions on wiring a stereo to mono quarter inch cable, go here.
