Stanley at Yoshi's

I just got back from seeing Stanley Clarke at Yoshi's,  Great show.  A 23 year old keyboardist and 22 year old drummer, both of whom kicked ass!  Stanley played an upright for the first half, and then finished out the show with Dragon's Breath!!!!  It sounded incredible.

He took it out, wined and dined it, proposed, married, had kids, the whole 9 yards!  He absolutely wailed on it.  In fact, during one passage where he was pounding away power chords that would make ac/dc cringe in fear, I believe he blew out one of the house speakers!  He really got some amazing tones out of it, including some unusual lead type tones and sometimes sounded like he was using an envelope follower, though I couldn't see if there were any pedals at his feet.  Another highlight was when Stanley played flamenco guitar on his stand up bass!

It's funny, there was a young hippie couple sharing our table.  When Stanley took out Dragon's Breath, I turned to my wife and said He's playing THE Alembic.  The young hippie guy turns to me and tells me that Stanley has actually been playing Alembic for years! LOL  I explained to him that I didn't mean an Alembic, but rather THE Alembic and told him about Dragon's Breath.  It was cool to realize that my hands had touched it before Stanley's.   (I was up at the shop before it was delivered to Stanley - but I was sworn to secrecy!).

That's Alembic for you, they create a presentation work of art to honor Stanley that just happens to also be an awesome instrument appropriate for performance too.

I just did the Saturday night show and really had a blast as well. I was hoping he would play the Alembic a little more but still enjoyed what he did do. I have to ditto your thoughts on the sound and performance of Stanley playing his Alembic and like you the thought that I actually had that bass in my grubby little hands was awe inspiring. I am sure Stanley played better because I had held that bass but that's another story! Anyway time to go practice.

If I had known he was going to play THE bass, I would have bought a bus ticket cross country!  Well no, I wouldn't have really; but I'm glad you were there for the experience on my behalf!
