I just got a couple of DVD's that interested DeadHeads may wanna ck out:
Bruce Hornsby and the Range: A Night on the Town, and;
Bruce Hornsby And Friends
The former is from '90 and was recorded live in front of a Hollywood studio audience. It features, amongst others, Jerry Garcia performing on a couple of tracks. The pix quality is OK...the master must have been tape and the original release was VHS, and they did little (if anything) to remaster it. The sound and performances are good...classic early Hornsby. It almost moved me to tears to see Jerry, bloated and white-haired, but musically on that particular night. The crowd cheered especially loud for Jerry.
The latter is from '95 from Manhattan and features Bob Weir and a halfway decent jazzed-up version of Jack Straw. This whole disc is very jazz flavored (Pat Metheny plays a jazz box on a couple tracks here). The pic and sound quality are excellent on this one, and the performances are good. Lots of guest stars on this one as well (Bonnie Raitt, Gregory Hines, Don Henley, etc.). Lot's of DeadHeads in the audience, most up-front and all touting Jerry shirts as this was recorded just a couple of months after his untimely death.
It's easy to see why Bruce fit in with the Dead...easy-going, great chops, good voice, and open to musical experimentation. Dead Heads didn't seem to mind his commercial pop leanings too much after they heard him play with the Dead, LOL!
Both can be had for under $20 delivered from deepdiscountdvd.com.
Recommended!
Cheers,
Kevin
