I had the pleasure of seeing the Pat Metheny trio with Christian McBride and Antonio Sanchez last night, and I'd have to say ( next to the keith jarrett trio) it was the best show I've ever seen.
I sometimes forget that Pat is probably the best guitar player, ever. But he definitely reminded me of that last night. I'm not a fan of Pat's group, as its a little too fuzak for me, but his trio is SICK! Christian Mcbride?!?!?! Does anybody want to buy some basses? Because i think im done. He's the definition of a perfect bass player. I'd have to say that Antonio Sanchez impressed me the most, though. Last night was the first time I've heard him, and I'm telling any jazz cats out there-  CHECK HIM OUT! He's like if Elvin Jones, Jack Dejohnette, and Tito Puente had a crazy drumming love child.
ANYWAY, if you guys get the chance, you better see these cats.

I've never seen the Trio but I am a fan of the group.  I had the rich blessing of watching them live when Richard Bona was in the lineup.  He is also an incredible bassist and composer.  He has 3 solo albums out.  I really recomend checking these out.  Phenomenal bass playing!  I think Christian McBride is phenomenal as well.  Also a great composer.

I was lucky enough to see the Trio a little while ago.  It was absolutely incredible.  McBride is definitely a monster player.  Great on both upright and electric.  He used his upright on every song but the encore.  Antonio Sanchez is amazing as well.  I had heard him on a lot of stuff but you don't really know what he's like until you see him live.  He's insane..a perfect drummer.

Hi guys,I've seen Pat Metheny two years ago,in Italy. He played in trio with two italian musicians,Massimo Manzi(drums)and Paolino Dalla Porta (upright).Great concert, like Austin,I don't like so much P.M.Group,I think that Pat reveal his amazing talent in the trio contest(like he started). So,I've studied with Paolino and I recommend to you to listen his works.

While I have respect for Pat and his group, it's the small group stuff I really love. I've seen Pat with Roy Haynes and Dave Holland as well as with his brother back in the day at Ryles (with Steve Swallow, one of my all time favs). Just amazing. I do think that my favorite time of seeing Pat, though, was with Joni Mitchell and Jaco, etc, back in 1979. Just fantastic. I also enjoy Song X, with Ornette, but it's a little more challenging. I love I Can See Your House From Here, with Swallow and Sco ( and the amazing Bill Stewart).

Metheny with Joni and Jaco is captured on the Shadows And Light DVD.  This is a wonderful concert that I highly recommend.

that concert is fantastic on vinyl as well- the recording is very clean and expertly balanced. I saw Pat and the trio at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor when they came through a couple of months ago. Front row seats near the middle! My wife remarked that it was possibly the best concert she had ever attended. Whew! Michael (Flame Koa Essence)

I saw the Shadows And Light tour back in the 70's in Mineapolis. WOW! Joni, Jaco, Pat, Don Alias, Brecker, etc. - SUPER GROUP!! Jaco had on a rust-orange jump-suit with matching headband. I sent a note to him backstage, hoping to meet him - nope. Anyway, I kept sneaking down front, and being shoo-ed away by security (wasn't as tight as it is now). Man.....
