Anyone else able to check out the first stop (Minneapolis) on the November Furthur Tour. I thought it was a great concert. Went with a friend/guitarist who hasn't been impressed with a band since the Allman Bros. lost Duane (yes! that's a very long period) and he walked out stating that he had a great time. The band sounded a lot fresher than reported by those who saw them at Red Rocks (it was their 1st stop on this tour) although the sound wasn't the greatest. At first it was John K. who wasn't cutting through and then just in to the second set Weir's vocals faded away.

Place your effect pedals on top of your amp and run off the stage after the third song in the frst set to take what appeared to be a much needed bathroom break.

To be honest, I've never heard the Phil-tone I so appreciate when I've seen Phil live. Whether it's been an out-door concert, Bill Graham Auditorium, or the latest venue at the Northrup the lows always seem muddy and lost in the mix and its only the highs that approximately the sound.

I just received a recording of one of the Further shows at Red Rocks; I have listened to the first of three discs. The Phil tone is alive and well!
From what I have heard so far, the energy level was pretty low... The show started off on a fun note with The Golden Road, but the next song, Cassidy, was way laid-back, especially Weir's vocal part.
Am I alone here or does it strike anyone as very strange that they have a guitarist who is doing his unabashed best to copy Jerry? And whoever sung Big Railroad Blues sounded just like Jerry, too. Personally I would rather hear them move further than backwards.

I don't think John is doing his best to copy Jerry. Certainly he is a master of Jerry style guitar, and has worked very hard at that. But I hear a lot of other influences and creativity in his playing.

I like John's playing, but his vocal Jerry imitation is downright creepy if you ask me. Sort of like watching Frank Caliendo doing John Madden or George Bush. I've got tix to see them NYE in SF.

You're in for great time on New Years Eve. Saw them with my son in SF last NYE. Other than Phil sounding a bit muddy from where we were located it was a great show and a totally crazy atmosphere given the date. And the show just went on and on - an incredible evening. Only downside was that after getting back to the hotel @ 2:30-3:00 AM and needing to get to the airport @ 6:00 AM for a flight back to Minneapolis, I needed to wash and dry my only set of clothing so I could make it through the drug sniffing dogs. I swear that one could have experienced an indirect high if located anywhere within 3 city blocks of the Bill Graham Auditorium that night. Luckily the laundry was on the same floor on which I was staying so I only had to walk about 50 yards with only a towel wrapped aroud my waist.

It's interesting that having seen the group 3 times over the past year (SF, CT & Mpls.), IMO John's singing and guitar work is sounding less and less like a mere copy of Jerry. My only disappointment is the lack of new material. Those creative juices can't be totally sucked dry yet can they?

First couple times I saw John, I thought he sounded just like Jerry, vocally. But having listened to some of the tapes, I find his singing stylistically similliar of course, but he doesn't sound like Jerry to me, he sounds like John. Take a listen to some of the stuff on archive.org if you haven't already.

OK, everyone's opinion counts, but after listening to the rest of the recording I got from Red Rocks, the guitar player still sounds to me like he has listened to Jerry exclusively for his whole life. I don't hear any other influences; maybe that's just me... If memory serves there was an interview in a recent issue of Rolling Stone in which both Weir and Lesh agreed that this guitar player is a copy of Garcia (and that was OK with them). To me the whole show sounds like the Grateful Dead music files run through some kind of musical enhancement software. It's nice music, but the picture has a mustache. (That said, I am fully aware that the vibe at one of Further's shows may be fantastic and may belie this recording I have heard, in the same way that the REAL Dead's recordings were nothing like their shows. But I am not driven to find out.)

The piano work on that cut and on the whole Red Rocks recording is outstanding!

Went to see the band at MSG last night...Gotta admit this was the first show Ive seen in a couple of years that I enjoyed this much. Ive seen Furthur a few times previously and really didnt think too much of it, but last night rocked!! This band has come along way since last year.
