50 Years Ago Today

The Beatles first Ed Sullivan appearance was 50 years ago today.  It is, in my view, and important event in the history of our music and our culture.
 
It is a moment in time that markedly contrasts what came before and what came after, in terms of both music and culture.
 
It was a birth, a new beginning; and within five and a half years it had evolved to Woodstock.
 
Fifty years ago today.  The impact of that day on my life has been enormous.  The music, the culture; where I am today is founded to a significant degree on that turning point in our history.
 
It was fifty years ago today that the band taught us all how to play.

It marked one of the few times my father, an exceptionally wise man, was less than wise.  As we gathered before the television set, (small B&W model), my parents, my 13 year old twin brothers, and my eight year old self, watching the show, my father commented that in six months no one would even remember their name.  Boy, was he wrong!

My dad had similar feelings. When they played Fenway Park they used the Air Force base we lived on to fly into to avoid the crowds. He could not understand why all of the base teenagers wanted to go down to the flight line to see them arrive and get on buses. Funny how years later I would hear him whistling Norwegian Woods that he had heard from my albums.
