I know alembic innovate rather than copy but, I just saw this picture on Facebook and thought this would/could be a great idea if you wanted to have one bass with different electronics and pickup configurations.

You could choose to buy signature, Europa, Epic or other modules with different pickup placements etc depending on your gig.

Hard to retro fit that into an existing instrument......yes.
I've often wondered why pickup makers don't come up with common, standard plug & socket for pickups which would make changing them much easier with no technical skills required. This just takes the concept a little further.

What do you think?

The sound of Alembic is medicine for the soul!

EMG pickups are interchangeable, for the most part, within each shell size. At least SGD shared pinouts with them.

I tried doing a modular preamp situation like this with my homemade Modulus body, but it got out of hand pretty quickly.

I guess once you go whole hog and get S II electronics or a Superfilter, then the other stuff becomes superfluous, so for the Alembic situation, there's not as great a need. Also, most Alembic pickups have a pretty similar sound. It's not like going from a lipstick pickup to a MM pickup.

I have an original Ampeg-Dan Armstrong plexi guitar that has interchangable pickups that use a simple thumbscrew in back.
