At first, I was going to guess Weng?, but now I think it's a very dark piece of Bocate on the body with a lighter one on the peghead. Serial number should confirm it if anyone gets a hold of that.

The $1695 BIN is pretty funny considering it's listed for $1295 on their website. I guess my 94 Epic was a steal at under a thousand.

I've noticed several music stores that also have e-Bay store fronts or auctions that try to get more on e-Bay than they do when you buy direct. I have talked to a couple that had auctions with Buy it Now and starting bids well above what they would charge over the phone. For example I was pricing a A&H mixer that had a buy it now of $999 plus shipping. When I called to get info I was offered the same item for $799 shipping included. In another case I was offered the item for $75 less than the starting bid. Makes you wonder if the folks are trying to take advantage of the over exuberance that an auction can bring.
Of course it might be related to the manfacturers minimum advertised price since they were authorized dealers.

I just thought they were smokin' rope...both with the obviously mistaken top wood description and the way-too-high-for-the-market BIN pricing...hence my thread title.

FWIW, it never hurts to ask about a real price from the vendor, especially if they're a retailer. That's how I got my killer deal on the Series I I got recently.

I know some woods change color over time (vermillion goes from orange-ish to brown-ish, for instance), but I'm with you guys: Sure doesn't look like purpleheart to yours truly, either.

What I'm REALLY wondering is what is all of that white in the grain?

Those look like flash reflections coming from the grain.

The white flecking in the grain mentioned by Joey is something I've only seen before on the occasional Wal bass with a facing of Paduak and on the odd Wenge faced Wal.

I should add that most Wals I've seen faced with either of the above woods exhibit no white streaks at all but they do crop up now and then.My first impression was the same as Mica's,Wenge.

As it's an epic, I'd go with Valentinos' observation. The 'paint' on early Epics is just a fine covering so doesn't fill the grain in the same way that the current finish does. Sadly means that it's more susceptible to wear and tear.
