A shop in MD just put what looks like a salvagable set of S1 guts, including damaged pickups, on the 'Bay; here's the link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=22670&item=7323520524&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
I know of a fine but gutted '78 S1 that has sat idle for the last few years for want of such electronics, and unless you good people alert me to something obviously amiss I plan to make a go for the guts and then the bass.
Tips and suggestions will be rewarded with eternal gratitude.

Well, it's missing the 1/4 jack, but otherwise looks to be complete. That's an interesting brass plate the controls are mounted on; looks like it came out of a non-Alembic bass. The listing does say that it's being sold untested and as is. So what's the story on the '78 S1??

Thanks, Dave.
That Series is currently owned by someone else, so I'm hesitant to talk about it much.Suffice to say, it was gutted at some point and has been awaiting restoration for years.

Actually, the plate made me think of old #12, maybe a lefthanded version?

At first I was thinking left handed too, but the curve looks like it was designed to follow the curve of the body on a right handed bass.

Didn't think of that. Maybe so, Dave.
