« on: October 26, 2006, 09:40:11 AM »
Check out this ebay listing.  Very unusal tailpiece shape.  The seller claims he has a '77 Alembic custom Les Paul that he's converting into a bass!!!???  WHY?????

Seems kind of weird to me too. If it truely is a 77 Alembic Les Paul it is a rare bird and why would you want to disfigure it?

I wonder how he'll handle the tuning head?

This just makes me shudder.  I wish he would have taken a picture first . . .

Hey, how about this idea:  I think I'll convert my '61 Strat into a Steinberger-like guitar.  I'll cut off the headstock and the sides of the body - won't that be cool?

That particular seller has a habit of buying up cheap rare or custom basses and reselling them for hundreds more than his purchase price.  He's bid against me on a couple basses, pushing up the prices I had to pay, and he's also outbid me a couple times only to immediately relist the item at an inflated price.  When I emailed him, his response was to the effect of oh, i never sell basses for profit, I'm just searching for the right one for me!

Personally, I'd stay as far away from him and his auctions as possible.

It's awful.  We're talking about 24.75 scale length, most likely.  Unless he tunes like a four string guitar, it will be the equivalent of tuning a 34 bass down by two and a half to three steps.  He's almost going to nead a BEAD string set to tune it to EADG with any kind of tension.  I fear the neck will turn into a twisted mess in the not too distant future.  This is also likely to be irreversible because of what will be done to the headstock to support bass tuners.

Let's hope he's planning on ADGC tuning at least...
