Series Question
« on: March 12, 2011, 09:03:11 PM »
I bought a Distillate that's routed for series electronics a while back, but has signature electronics in it (one of Adam's creations). Anybody know the cost/procedure for getting Series guts put in? Mica? Thanks!

Oh yeah, heres the FTC for the bass, which i guess is an EVH, not a distillate: http://club.alembic.com/Images/631/8795.html

A few years ago I considered one of Adam's creations that was at The Low End in TN. It was a medium scale that had Anniversary electronics(?) but was routed for Series electronics. I called Alembic and spoke to Mica. I don't remember the exact figure, but it was between $3500 - $4500 to change over to Series electronics. Almost none of the electronics could be reused. BTW, the upgrade from S1 to S2 was not much more expensive...if done at the same time.

According to the Quote Generator, upgrading to Series II from Signature is $6400, from Europa/Rogue is $6700;  I would think it would be in that range.  (Interestingly, going from Sig or R/E to Spoiler does not involve a downcharge)

It is also very hard to locate the series pickups and board used. It might take a year of looking.

It has always amazed me about how much those series electronics go for.

also, i'm not exactly sure what you mean by that, Dave. i wouldn't just be getting new series guts from Alembic?

I believe he thought you were planning on finding used Series guts and send them with your bass to Alembic to have them installed instead of sending your bass and having them put new stuff in it

I would suspect that if you could actually find used Series I guts for sale, that any competent luthier should be able to install them relatively easy (and for that matter, cheaply).  The problem would be that you are most likely going to be waiting for several years (if not more) to ever see them for sale.  In my humble opinion, your time and money would be better spent on an SF-2, if you don't already own one.  It's pretty much the same as buying Series II electronics in a separate unit, and they hold good resale value if you are inclined. One of these combined with on-board Signature electronics would provide an insane amount of flexibility.  There would still be the difference in pickups (single coils vs stacked) and the dummy coil, but the SF-2 really is a swiss army knife for tone.

Yes, if you could find the series guts used (I managed to for about $800) it would not be that hard to install them, as they are quite modular.
They sound great. I also agree that the SF-1 is the next best thing.

Good Luck,

Differences in older VS new type Series units such 2 plate VS 3 plate requirements in wood routing might make for note worthy consideration if you are ready and able to perform the  wood working with clean results. One would need the appropriate cover plates as well.

Isn't there electronic adjustment involved? I thought when they installed Series electronics that Ron Wickersham spent time with each individual bass to get it electronically set up properly...

I know the bass you have, Austin. I'm pretty sure we took the Series electronics out and put them in another of Adam's basses then changed these to either Signature or Anniversary.

I've sent you an email with a price quote on the electronic mod.
