New Year's Eve; cool!

Hey Dave.  
 
  You know, it's still kind of a shock to me I'm gigging as much as I am as a solo bassist and I have high hopes and strong indications I'll be gigging even more in the new year.  
 
  My first anniversary is the first week in January and to say it's been an interesting year is very much an understatement.  I went into my first gig with 14 songs, a lot of heart and strong improv skills .  I'm runnning about 45 tunes now with about half of them originals.  It's no exaggeration when I say I'm having the time of my life musically as a solo bassist.  
 
I think more importantly is I'm 'living proof' it can be done without being 'world class' so to speak.  To date I've inspired at least a few other bassists to at a minimum entertain the thought of becoming a soloist.  I wish you all the best.

Kimberly, your example is certainly inspiring.  It appears that I'm changing my approach in that I've started practicing on my six string.  I'm thinking that some of the things I am working on will be a lot more interesting if not confined to four strings.  There will be a learning curve, I get lost fairly quickly on the six string, so it will be a while; but that's ok, learning is fun too!

Very cool Kimberly. I've thought about trying some solo gigs but there's just not many venues for that in my area.
 
Dave, try taking ONLY your 6 string on a few gigs, this way you have to play it. Thats how I made the adjustment on playing 6 and 8 string. Yea I made some mistakes but it I had to learn to swim or drown so to speak.

Olie; to get more specific, I need to get together with Mica to address a problem with one of the saddles on my six string before I can take it out of the house.  And ideally, I'm looking to pick up one with a classic taper neck instead of the comfort taper I have now.  But yes, you're right; at some point I need to get out of the house and just play.

Hi Dave - We've got to stop meeting like this!   Best of times with your sixer and I hope you get the saddle problem settled quickly.  I remember switching to my 'fiver' from my four and had the same issues with 'getting lost'.  Six boggles my brain, though I have to confess to thinking about a seven.    I need to run to Bass Northwest and check out the Conklin they have while it's still there.  It'll be the first time I've ever tried playing a bass with more than five.  I really wonder about the neck width issue.  Anyway, when it's time most likely I'll go with a custom Alembic six.  It just seems like six should be plenty enough for me.    Brings to mind, what's your tuning?  E-f?  E-e? B-c? B-b?  
 
Olie - Dude, I am so sorry I didn't schedule the time to get together when I was in Louisiana earlier this year.  Truly a regret.  For sure, it's a done deal next time through.  Promise.  
 
  If I might make a suggestion?  Work some material up and then find yourself some open mikes.  Sure, people will look at you strange when you say you want to play solo bass.  Matter of fact, you can count on it!    But.  Your instrument and your music will speak for you!  That's when I've found the 'light goes on' for just about everywhere and for everyone I've ever played for.  I can't tell you how many times I've heard, and this is nearly verbatim because it's about the same every time.  I couldn't/didn't understand what the big deal was about going to see some bass player until I heard you play.  S'truth.  Many, many times I've heard that same thing.  And as I've said myself many a time, one of the biggest challenges for me is the 'education' of the club owner/manager/public in general, that being a solo bassist doesn't mean playing a bass solo all night long.  It's the getting in the door that's one of the tough ones.  The gigs are there, you just have to educate/show them that they want you.  
 
Anyway, (hypothetical question) , how much more 'pure' can your music and playing your instrument be, then when playing as a soloist?  Major, major sweetness and high, high coolness quotient.  It's also rumored it could be addictive.  Try it, I bet you'll like it.

I've been working on some things on the four string; but before I can start working with them on the six, I need to practice scales for a while.  And that's ok since I like practicing scales!

A video from last night from somewhere around the end of the second set.  As I had a 'feeling' the piano guy bailed and it was a long night.  All told though it was real gas and much to my surprise I actually had material left over at the end of the night.  Of course since I can 'stretch things out a bit' I shouldn't have been surprised.  
 
I call this one 'Coppin a Feel'.

Very nice.  I've always enjoyed the clips you have put up on Youtube.  I was wondering about your gear setup.  I bought a Jamman looper this past year (largely inspired by the stuff you do with a bass and looper).  I also play Epics (I have a 4 and a 5).  I have found that my sound is a bit muddy when I have 2 or 3 things going.  Do you just make sure you don't do different parts in the same range or do you change the EQ settings on the different parts?  I see you reach down occasionally and adjust something.  Any suggestions for me?
