OK, the rest of the country seems to be talking about getting together, how about we that are so close to the mother-ship? Are we too late for the March-April time slot?
Thoughts?
Ken TEO
-
I think it would be good to start talking about it. The place in Canyon is great. I also am going to ask someone that I know who has a very large old Venue with a 30 foot wide stage where I recently played at a private party .We would probably have to arrange for liability insurance for the day in questions and abide to the owners rules that are really not that rigid .He and his wife now live in this venue and they are in the process of trying to sell the property. I will ask him if we can work out having our Alembic Party there . If it does not work for him at this time then I am IN for the Gathering as last time . I will report back ______.
-
If you're trying to make me jealous, it's working!!!
-
hehe, Rusty, you're not alone
-
Rusty, that's only two hard days of driving each way...Senior Management will understand.
Speicky, that's a little more complicated...
-
I will come down!
-
Ken, with all due respect... it is NOT !
...drum roll...
because I've got no senior management, lol !
I've already checked the fares for transatlantic rowing boats, but I feel I've got to investigate a little more
have a good time everyone,
Christian
-
Speicky,
I was generalizing... It would be a little harder for you to drive here.
:-)
Looks like we have some traction, let's get Bill TGO, Harry, Mica, Sam and Kimberly in on this...
-
Sounds good to me. By the way, how's your wife doing, Ken?
Bill, tgo
-
I have a tentative date of April 14th, but I still need final confirmation on that, so don't book any long-distance travel yet, folks! I should have it firmed up by the end of the month.
Will tells me the studio space will be available for some more private demos separate from the stage area. Should be a bunch of fun.
-
OK , sounds good .
-
Well, my son lives in Hollywood & my wife HAS been begging me to go out for a visit! Hmmmmmm....
-
April 14 works for me!
-
April 14th should be good for me too.
Bill, she's doing really well, and MAYBE she'll try to make the trip this time, but no promises yet.
-
Ken,
I am glad to hear that your Wife is doing better as well. It was nice to meet you at the last Gathering, perhaps I will see you both next time .
-
Hmm if it's not too late into the year I may be able to muster up enough willpower to wait until then to collect my bass from Mica if that's ok for her to keep it at the factory for me for that long. Then I could do the factory tour, collect the bass, join the party and make the trip even more memorable.
Mica it is totally acceptable for you to lie to me and tell me the bass won't be ready till then..... :-)
Jazzyvee
-
April 14th works for me.
I call dibs on Bill's spare room!
-
Sometime between September 23rd and 27th works for me :-)
Graeme (now booked on a number of flights around the US sept/oct)
-
Nick: carpool?
Bradley
-
Generally: anyone want to carpool early Friday from Seattle?
Mica-- any chance we can get a factory tour late Friday?
Bradley
-
I was a little worried about the date, but 4/14 just opened up for me! Yea!!!!!
Jonathan: You've got the room, though you may be sharing it with our newest family members, Cattabis Indica and Cattabis Sativa (Indie & Tiva for short).
Bill, tgo
-
I would be down for that Bradley!. Speaking of get togethers, I have to come to Seattle next week. If you have time we should meet up!
Nick
-
Bill,
Thanks. As long as I don't have to share the litter box with them, I'm fine.
-
Nick,
Sure thing-- meet at Bass NW?
Bradley
-
Being fortunate enough to have attended 2 of these in the past I can attest this event is NOT to be missed, if at all possible.
Hanging with the Wickersham's extended family; putting faces to all the monikers and usernames on the forum; great hospitality from our gracious hosts; fabulous music;...and oh yeah, the huge gaggle of indescribable instruments; will have you on a high for days if not weeks.
To our out-of-state and international comrades I say come on down/up/sideways -- whatever it takes.
-Sam
-
Sounds like this one is shaping up to be the best yet! Count me in!
Kent
-
OK - April 21 is the confirmed date - mark your calendars!
-
Whew - April 21 works for me too!
-
Cool ! I went last year and it was a blast. I plan to go again this year. Maryann and I had a great time.
- Mike
-
April 21st? RATZ! I'm already committed to speak on a panel at a big event in Richmond that day - (the whole 420 thing, you know). Any possibility of doing it on Sunday, the 22nd, instead? Old #10 really wants to go!
Bill, tgo
-
I've got that in my diary now. Hope all things plan out right for me to get there for that date.
Can someone email me an address of the venue and times etc.
I'm not sure where I'll be staying at the moment so once I get that sorted I will ask again here for some directions. :-)
Looking forward to it.
Jazzyvee
-
The obvious solution to Bill's problem is to make it a 2 day event. If the turnout is anything like last time, there's more than enough Alembics and players to go around!
-
Kent, you're a genius!
-
It wouldn't be the same without Bill. Let's see about a change to the 14th, 22nd or even stretching it to 2 days.
I'm on it!
-
OK, officially changed to the 22nd - a Sunday Gathering on the hill.
-
YES! That makes it a lot easier for me too! I will be there for sure now. I will have a car FULL of Alembics.
Nick
-
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!! I was really bummed about the possibility of missing this. I really appreciate the effort to change it to Sunday.
Jazzyvee: The gathering is held in the tiny town of Canyon, which lies just east of the Oakland hills. Most people in the Bay Area don't even know about it. There is no public transportation. You best bet would probably be to hook up with someone who has been there before and carpool.
My offer to put you up still stands, though Jonathan has dibs on our spare bedroom (he stayed there last year too). However my studio downstairs is in a large finished basement, (it used to be a separate apartment), with thick carpet and the biggest bathroom in the house. I have a blow-up airbed that I've been told is very comfortable. You're welcome to crash there, if you'd like.
Bill, tgo
-
Thanks Bill, you are a star.
Jazzyvee
-
Hope you have a great time Jazzy. I'm hoping to meet up with a few club members when I visit in September. A visit to the mothership is one of the few 'set in stone' days on our itinerary.

Bump
I was planning to get a rental car as I need to get around to and from airport with a load of bass cases and stuff and also to get to the mothership to collect my new ,to me, bass.
Bill if you could email me a contact number so we can chat things over that would be a great help in my planning. Jazzyvee
-
email sent.
Bill, tgo
-
Hm, maybe I'll skip my last set of exams and just come on out. Be great to see everyone!
-
Edwin:
Having personally experienced both law school finals and Northern California Alembic gatherings, I can vouch for the fact that the Alembic gatherings are more enjoyable!
If there's anyway you could swing it, it would be great if you could join us.
Bill, tgo
-
I've got to be realistic. My parents would be supremely pissed off, my wife would be amused at best (being 8 months pregnant at that time would not increase her enthusiasm for my gallivanting) and would be less than enthused by the other activities I've got planned for right after graduation, like another week around Colorado with Melvin Seals.
-
You're playing with Melvin? Far out! I played with him at my wedding 10.5 years ago when my friend, Danny Schultz, (stage name Danny Brant), was playing in JGB. Melvin was a sweetheart. My wife gives me a look when I tell this story, but the high point of the wedding for me was when my wife went to thank Melvin for playing and he told her your old man can really play.
Bill, tgo
-
I know a Danny Shultz who's in your line of work out there. He used to play in Boulder with Band du Jour. We got to jam and hang out a bunch back in the day. Band du Jour opened up for my old band, Shockra, a few times on the east coast and in Colorado. I wonder if it's the same guy. Apparently he used to gig quite a lot when he was at CU Law. It seems that his professors were a little more enthusiastic about that than mine might be.
-
Edwin; apparently it's the same guy. Here's his bio (http://www.dannybrantband.com/band.html).
-
OK, this is extra spooky. I just looked up that site and apparently his drummer was good friend of mine in Boston back in the 80s! Small world. I haven't seen Danny since touring through SF with Great American Taxi, but Bill, say hi next time you see him!
-
Sadly, I will not be able to attend this year's gathering. The original Saturday date worked fine. Unfortunately, I've not been able to get coverage for Monday. I don't want to rush off to the airport right after the gathering and I'd rather not go to work on 3 hours sleep. My patients (and their lawyers) frown on that sort of thing ;-)
Besides I'm starting a new job and need to take a certain kind of test in May that I might flunk if I study too hard in California.
Looks like JazzyVee gets a comfortable bed after all.
Next year for sure...
-
Jonathan:
Sorry you won't be able to make it this year.
I may be in Chicago in a couple of months. I'll let you know.
Jazzyvee, you still planing on coming out for this?
Bill, tgo
-
Yes definitely.
Jazzyvee
-
Unfortunately I'm unable to make it on April 22nd. Best wishes to all for another successful NorCal gathering. Looking forward to a full report and photos, however!
Eric

I've got on the list: kenbass4, sonicus, afrobeat_fool, lbpesq, hieronymous, jazzyvee
The first of probably 2 emails for Canyon V will be sent this week. If anyone else wants me to send you the details, add a post here or send me an email with Canyon V as the subject line and I'll add you.
-
Hey, Mica!
I'm in too!
-Sam
-
Mica, can you put me down as a definite maybe?
-
Bradley:
Hope you can make it!
Bill, tgo
-
Bill I will give you a call tomorrow. I got my passport renewed, ticket and visa and rental car sorted out now. Looking forward to meeting you and the guys and getting my bass.
Cheers
Jazzyvee
-
Bradley, I am going on friday if you want to work out some logistics.
Nick
-
Sigh. Looks like no gathering for me.
-
Hmmmm...
Got room for another bassist? ;)
If so, please send me directions if you would be so kind.
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
Right im on the plane awaiting takeoff. Bill see you later, mica see you tomorrow for twin and factory tour, guys im looking forward to putting faces to basses and fingers to strings . See you sunday.
Jazzyvee
-
That's so cool, Jazzyvee! Enjoy your trip!
-
Have fun you all!
-
Dang, that's what I get for staying away so long. Had I seen this earlier I may have been able to swing this.

Mica:
Would you please shoot me a copy of the directions? I know how to get there blindfolded, but I don't remember the street names and specific turns and I'd like to forward a copy to a friend.
Also, do we have a start time?
Finally, I can report Jazzyvee has arrived safe and sound. My band started rehearsal with Arlo Guthrie's Comin' Into Los Angeles last night, in his honor: Comin' in from London from over the Pole, flyin' on a big airliner

Hi Bill,
I sent an email out last night with the directions to everyone I knew was coming or likely to come. If you need me to resend, let me know.
11-5 is the time.
Looking forward to Sunday! If you want to attend and didn't get my email last night, please email me today.
-
Are there any guitarists planning to attend who are in need of an amp? I can easily throw an extra in with my stuff. I can offer a 60's Bandmaster, a 60's blackface Pro Reverb with JBLs, a Boogie Mark III, or a Boogie Transatlantic 15 though a 1x12 boogie cab. Let me know. I'll be playing my Pritchard, most likely.
Bill, tgo
-
Hi Guys,
I'll definitely be coming on down with arrival in the area sometime Saturday afternoon/evening.
I'll be bringing my Epifani UL 500 Combo (single 12) for anyone interested in playing/hearing it and I'll also be bringing my pedal board.
I'm very much looking forward to seeing 'The Family' again.
Good Times!
Best Regards,
Kimberly
-
Bill and his family are great hosts. :-)
I'm really looking forward to my visit to the mother ship tomorrow to collect my bass. I'm still looking for a leather gig bag that holds two basses before I leave for home on Monday.
I tried a few places today in the Oakland area but no joy. If you cam point me to a music store that has one between Oakland and Santa rosa that would be great. I called reunion blues but they don't sell direct and recommended a place called banana land (I think).
Jazzyvee

Can I get a replacement power cord for my SF-2 while I am there Mica? I have been calling but get no response. No worries but it has been tough to find an exact replacement on the internet. Thanks, and see ya'll in a few days.
Nick
-
Hi , Jazzyvee
Perhaps they meant this place in San Rafael ; http://www.bananasmusic.com/ (http://www.bananasmusic.com/)
Wolf aka Sonicus
-
And this bag: http://www.bananasmusic.com/productdetail.asp/pid_13004/productname_Reunion-Blues-Double-Electric-Bass-Bag (http://www.bananasmusic.com/productdetail.asp/pid_13004/productname_Reunion-Blues-Double-Electric-Bass-Bag)
-
I'll bring a power supply for the SF-2 for you Nick. It's crazy, you know I answer the phone all day long! But I suppose there are few times where I'm out in the shop or at lunch. Oh well, will see you on Sunday
-
Yeah that's the store and bag. I just need to give them a call to see if they are in stock before I hit the road. I just hope the more pregnant body styling of my new bass fits the case.
Are stores willing come down from listed prices if you haggle?
Jazzyvee
(Message edited by Jazzyvee on April 20, 2012)
-
Jazzyvee , YES ! Around here with such stores, on such an item you can look it up on line (Google it) and find a price that might be lower and then present such information (price) to the prospective store that you would like to make your purchase from.
-
Jazzy--Bananas actually has a store in Santa Rosa as well, FYI.
-
Oh--and see you all Sunday. I'll be bringing my Super Prince amp (maybe this year I can even get some of you skinny string types to actually play through it!) and maybe just for yuks I'll throw my Genz Benz Neo 212/Boogie M-Pulse 600 rig in the car and my Walkabout Scout combo along with the Rogues in case we decide to try to set some kind of simultaneous multiple Alembic playing record.
-
Thanks, Mica. I really do appreciate that. I will also bring my amp. Hughes and Kettner Bass 600 with SF-2, Alembic power and tuner thru an Aguilar 12 w/horn.
Nick
-
OK, now it's starting to look like we may have enough amps to trigger some kind of seismic event!
-
I'll join in from this side of the pond :-)
-
Hey Mica, I just ordered a SF-2 from Will Gunn, I hope you have more than one power supply in stock! :-) He will be calling you Monday to place the order.
Rusty
-
Post photos for the rest of us, please.
Jon
-
Ok, just packing up the crew for the trek to Canyon. Looking forward to a fun day with everyone!
Pictures? Is that something that people around here like or something? ;)
-
Can you take a webcam and stream te event?
Have fun!
-
I have a camera with video so will Try to post some stuff on YouTube later. Streaming live video via mobile phone on international call rates is pretty slow and frighteningly expensive too. Maybe someone else may have the technology there.
Jazzyvee
-
Youtube is just fine :-)
Have a blast!
