Ok lets get this going, we have some new guys that have not got to experience a get to gather
late may or early june is good for me
Sir David T
-
I'm available June 8 & 9.
Rusty
-
Early June is the better of the two choices for me. I'll bring pictures of my since-sold Alembics?the stable is empty.
Mike
-
June 8 is clear for me for now.
Mike, I still have a fiver with your name on it. :-)
C-Ya............wayne
-
Sorry to hear you sold your Alembics Mike! I hope a new one is in your future!!
Rusty
-
Rusty - me, too.
Wayne - thanks for always thinking of me . . .
-
Bracheen, are you a Bubble puppy fan?
Hot Smoke and Sassafras was the hottest rock song ever recorded, are they back together?
Sir David T
-
Hey David, yes I am, yes it was, and kinda off and on. They get together every now and then for a special show. Rox Cox doesn't play with them anymore as he has some health issues. Todd Potter recently announced that he would no longer be in the line up either. Both were at the Threadgills show last October with Todd on guitar and Roy making an appearance for a special award honoring the band. They are planning a 2013 show.
-
Has any one heard from olie or terry , I m ready to make the. Trip to Dallas, Ibought a new car Friday night,, June 8th still sound Good, lets make it happen this June
David T
-
June 8 is still good for me!
-
I'll drop a line to Olie, John and Wayne. I'm not sure how often they visit the site.
Mike
-
Thanks Mike!
-
Thanks for the heads up Mike. I've been a little busy and detached lately os haven't checked in often. I am playing a bit more but do have June 8-9 open for now. And I do still have 2 I can bring.
-
Just tell me where to meet up, I'll be there
David T
-
I can bring my Eden rig with the SF-2 for everyone to check out.
Rusty
-
I can bring my Genz-Benz rig if needed
David T
-
Hey Olie, it would great to see you again.
-
Michael, for some of us it would be great to see y'all for the first time! :-)
Rusty
-
Heh, yeah, once it about all it takes.
-
LOL! You may be right Michael! There hasn't been a Texas gathering in what, 3 or 4 years? The intensity of a Lone Star 'Lembicians gathering is not something the cosmos can handle every year! I'm willing to take my chances though, I'm pretty sure I will be no worse for the wear afterwards, & probably come away with some great friends & great memories!
-
Sorry. Sorta. Well, not really! I thought you might enjoy the sarcasm. Feeling a little punchy due to lack of sleep.
Succinctly put: We're due.
-
Yes, we ARE!!
-
Any ideas on where to have this and has a firm date be agreed upon? I'd like to see if the guys I've been playing with can make it so we can have some jam time.
-
I've heard from John (SMUProf), our usual host, and he is unavailable on 06/08. If we stick with that Saturday, we'll need to get a venue.
Mike, would you have the opportunity to check into the space at the Jam Station again?
Any other ideas?
C-Ya..............wayne
-
I'll need to check with my event director, alias Mrs. O. But I have more than enough room at the new casa! Oh, by the Mike, did I mention I moved? LOL I am in Garland now, since Dec 1st.
Let me interject though, it won't be the same without JT there.
-
So Olie, you and Mike are almost neighbours now ? I feel the urge... no, desire to visit you folks again, but have no clue right now, if that will work out... a given date might help a bit. And cash, lots of it, LOL !
cheers, Christian
-
Olie - No, you didn't mention. Then again, I haven't asked. My bad. Garland? Just had to be closer to Taste of Italy, didn't you?
Wayne - yes, I can check.
Christian - Will you be bring Sue?
-
Man! I would hate to miss out on this. Got a room full of toys which cuts down the cost (no rental) and no load in/out for drums, PA, keyboards.
But I'm out of town on 6/8 - is 6/15 a no-go for others?
-
I have a gig on 6/15. 6/8 is my only open weekend in June
-
Since Olie's got new digs, I'll have to pass on 6/8 with major regrets. Can't stand in the way of expanding the Texas Alembic Mafia!
Let me know about the next one . . .
-
Sorry John, it would great if you could make it. Of course, you could always leave your key under the mat while you're out of the house. Just sayin'.
I'm going to ask The Jam Station for June 8. IICR they have 4, or 8 hour blocks. I liked the room we had the last time. Spacious and a PA. I don't recall the price, but it seemed reasonable when others shared the cost. Load-in was easy (they have an elevator!).
It's not too late if anyone wants to host, but you'll need a serious amount of room if more than four guys show up with basses and gear.
Olie, would your band mates be interested in coming?
-
Hey guys, I made some calls. If you will, send a private email to me if you're interested and I'll forward more specific information. I'd like to keep some of this off line, if that's alright.
Mike
-
Email sent!
-
to Rusty - and replied to.
David, Christian, Olie, Wayne, Rusty and John: Last night I sent a group email to the addresses listed in your profiles; reply here if you did not receive it, or send an email with your preferred address to the address in my profile.
There's always room for more . . . wink wink nudge nudge
Let's make this happen!
-
I received your email, thank you very much, Sir ! Definitely YES, let's make it happen
cheers, Christian
-
Reply sent guys!
-
either place is fine with me, just let me know
Sir David T
-
5 weeks and counting.
-
I can't wait!
-
guess w'all just have to...
-
I'll be there, I'll be on vacation the week before
-
To the community at large: TEXAS is definitely on in Dallas for Saturday, June 8. We'll be at mi casa, and we've already got a great turn out - at least 7 Alembicians are committed, with possibly more. Some seriously nice instruments in the group (looking forward to the photos). All day Saturday, probably not a late night. Some traveling will be in Friday night before and we'll hang out then as well.
We'll make room if any others can make it in Friday night and need a place to stay. If you can join us, let us know. Shoot me or groovelines an email and we'll get you location and time details.
It's been a couple of years since the last TEXAS round of awesomeness, and we want to make this the best one yet. Come out, bring your toys and play with us!
-
John, I can't wait to experience my fist Alembic Gathering! Thanks so much for offering your home to host the event & to put Doc & I up for the night! This is going to be so much fun!
-
Happy to. Can't speak for myself, but I can promise you've never met nicer guys than Wayne, Olie and Mike.
-
Clarification - I was speaking only of the Dallas group. David and Christian also fit that characterization - nice guys you want to know!
In fact, seems to be the case with all Alembicians. Maybe we can borrow the old Honda slogan - You meet the nicest people on an Alembic
-
The Honda slogan definitely fits! Every Alembic player I have ever met has been super nice & great people! When I toured the Mothership I met Wolf & his wife for supper the night before & he invited me, a total stranger, back to his house & let me play all of his amazing Alembics. Total class act!
-
Thanks Rusty !
That was fun ,My wife and I enjoyed meeting you both.
-
Thanks Wolf! My wife & I enjoyed meeting you both too! If you find yourself in Texas on June 8, come to our gathering!
-
Three weeks and counting.
I will bring my Genz-Benz rig, (it's Small)
my two Alembic's and my Hofner for fun
and fun will be had!!!!!!
Sir David T
-
everyone Remember to bring guitar stands for the group photo
me again
-
I will bring my Fender Rumble 350 too, it's small & rolls & sounds great! I just bought a new stand for the photo shoot too!
-
Please, Someone take their Zoom Q3HD for the visual and aural action for guys like me that can't get there and can fully enjoy some of the creativity!!!
Please!!!!
-
Charles, I don't have a Zoom, but I am bringing my Panasonic 1080p HD camcorder to capture the magic!
-
Great Rusty!!! You can down load it to here, correct? Or maybe sound cloud or facebook. My ears are drooling! Make sure you get someone to record you playing your shorty!
Chalie
-
I will post it on You Tube & put a link to it here. If anyone objects to having the video public on You Tube I can make it private where you have to have the link to get to it.
-
sorry, folks, I cannot make it this time. I have sent yall a mail...
cheers, Christian
-
I'm in a state of severe mental disorder right now... here in Germany, it is already Friday, June 7th, the day before the TX GT 2013, and I am still sitting in my unrockin chair in front of my monitor. I'll be with you in spirit and hold the flag up high here hurts anyway
Have a blast, make new friends, I'll join you very soon.
your friend Christian
-
Christian. I feel for you! I'm so excited about leaving Houston for the trip to Dallas today that I can't sleep! Here's something to look at until you get yours!
-
Christian it won't be the same without you. Maybe you can make the trip later on and that'll motivate us to do it again. Mindy and Brice were looking forward to seeing you again as well and were disappointed when I told them you couldn't make it.
OO
-
Have fun! (And post some pics, when you get the chance!)
-
Hope you guys have a great day .
graeme
-
I know you guys are going to have a total blast! Can't stress enough the importance of taking gazillion pictures (preferably outside if possible to avoid using flash) from every possible angle. Frankly, I don't feel I took enough this year and I'm still slightly miffed.
If it's too daunting to resize a whole ton of flicks to fit the posting requirements here on the forum, then create an album on facebook, flickr, etc. and make the link public so we can have a peek.
Gawk, play and be merry!!!!! The rest of us will be there in spirit.
-
Have FUN!
-
Enjoy the day guys and as usual, pics help us share the vibe.
jazzyvee
-
As they say in Texas:
Y'all have a great time!
Bill, tgo
-
Rusty was the official photographer, so I won't steal his thunder, but suffice it to say fun was had by all.
All in 15 Alembics, 8 Alembicians, along with 2 drummers and a guitarist. I think we raised the bar this time: Doc and Rusty came in Friday night, several of us visited Mike's church and heard him play, then headed over to a local bar for dinner and to hear Olie's band play. Turned it into a 24 hour Alembifest.
-
I love it ,
Congratulations . I know this has all been a long time in planning . I notice the TEXAS ALEMBIC shirts ! ( i like that ) I look forward to more pics.
Wolf
-
It's 11:30pm & I just got home & getting up at 3:30am for work, so pics will be posted tomorrow evening! I had an amazing time!! Thanks again to John for hosting & everyone for coming & sharing your incredible Alembics with everyone!
-
Rusty ,
I look forward to the pics .
Best Regards ,
Wolf
-
Thanks Wolf! We may not have as many atendees as California, but we do have a very respectful collection of Alembics & we have T shirts! Pictures coming tonight, & hopefully video too. I have to edit the video first.
-
Hey, Rusty!
So glad you had a great time. As a T-shirt guy I'm tickled to death you added that nice touch. Can hardly wait for the pics and vid. Congrats to you guys.
-Sam
-
Thanks Sam! I came across a killer deal on shirts so I couldn't pass it up! Just a little teaser, but you may get to hear Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida on an 8 string Exploiter with organ accompaniment!
-
Pics, pics, pics!!!! (please)
Bill, tgo
-
Here's the pix....
-
Wow!
They are all beautiful, you guys are looking good also! :-D
That frestless has me drooling, who's is that?
-
Mindboggling. Stunning instruments. GREAT pics. Cool crew. Well done!
-
Hey Paul - The fretless is my baby. It has become my go to over the years. Glad you like it.
Here's some history (beware, shocking photos ahead):
It started life as fretted, was converted, and suffered some setbacks along the road.

C-Ya...........wayne
-
Yeah, I'm with Paul. Can you add some captions after the fact? After seeing Dave's, Bill's and Harry's knobby headstocks -- and now this fretless -- I'm sold on the Inner Earth look.
Love the three standard point Series I's (?) in front of the fireplace shot. I know that just relaxing and having a good time is paramount, but spending the little bit of extra effort to take sub-grouping shots is worthwhile, because these are actually for posterity and all these instruments are priceless.
I also love how your very last shot mostly has darker basses on one side and the lighter ones on the other. Whether inadvertent or by design, it really emphasizes the spectrum of wood colors on these instruments.
-
Great pics ! It really looks like all was at Maximum Good .
All green lights on the control panels !
When it's like that __It's Priceless ____
-
The 3 series ones from left to right belong to Sir David, Doc Greene, and me. Mine was owned by Adam for many years, but I believe David's and Doc's were original purchases. From left to right they are 1976, 1978, and 1980.
-
Sorry about the lack of captions, I had to resize these 3 times before the forum would accept them even though they were all less than 150K on the original resize. I also didn't want to violate anyone's privacy by posting something about their instrument they may not want known so I figured I would let everyone fill in the blanks, which Wayne & John have done nicely.
-
Looks great! Thanks Rusty!
-
I love that 8-string Distillate! And that fretless 5! And all the others!
John
-
Wow. Just wow. Unbelievably excellent photos of some amazing instruments - thanks, Rusty. Hope all had a great time, and if you'll excuse me, I'll now return to those photos!!
-
Wow Wayne !
That history gives a completely new meaning to; 'if this bass could only talk'.
Thanks for sharing.
-
Excellent! You guys made me drool today!
Mike
-
Hey Rusty, did you get an idea of what you would like in a custom build from the basses you managed to try?
Jazzyvee
-
I hear you about resizing the pics Rusty. I know we have some posted guidelines about file size, but what settings did you finally use to get the pics to look this big without reducing the resolution too much? That's not in the instructions.
I'm sure we could all benefit from this knowledge once and for all, as it's very frustrating trying to reduce a 6mb file down to 150kb or lower without it being postage stamp size or poorly resolved. I can never get my pics to show up as big as yours...
-
Awesome! The 8-string Exploiter caught my eye first, then the ones with the pistol-grip upper horns. But they are all great!
-
The oldschool Series 4 string pictured in the middle(right in front of the fireplace) is the one I keep looking at.
-
I had a great time seeing the old friends again and meeting the new ones. I regret that I couldn;t stay longer but I had to get Mike back to my house and he had over an hour drive back home. The T-Shirt rocked Rusty, very cool indeed. We did manage to get a little playing in right up until this hit the table!
-
Now that's a picture to make a guy drool!
Mike
-
Hi guys,
very cool reports and pics so far, please keep them comin'... every word I read and every picture I look at is pure joy. Rusty, excellent job on the Ts (yes, and I will say that seven more times) , and very good photos, too.
Especially, I love the very first and the very last, the gang and the girls in a group shot, what a nice frame... let me see... on your very first pic, there's Olie on the left, then Mike, John, Doc, an unknown character, Wayne, Sir David, and you, Rusty. but wait a Moment...
Please not tell me anyone that this unknown character is mein Bruder Robert F. K. from Fort Worth ! He looks just like him or a twin to me, amazing. I do not see his 5string walnut series bass, and he is not a forum member, AFAIK, so it must be a twin Please forgive me that I do not know / memorize the the two additional smart guys in the last photo, far left to Olie, and the Young man between Sir David and Rusty.
Keep them Pictures comin' ! Yeehaw !
cheers, Christian
-
oh, @ Mike, Olies Picture made me drool, too...
-
Ah, yeah. The ABCs of a great afternoon: Good friends, good food and Alembics. Meeting Rusty, Doc and Robert for the first time was a treat. Very likeable gents. A most enjoyable day, thanks everyone.
Hats off to John for hosting, you made the day for everyone. Rusty, thanks for the tee, a very nice touch.
-

Feel free to identify, clarify or rectify as needed. I'm sure there are more posts to come.
JT
-
And Mike's Geddy Lee Jazz cannot go without mention. . . that's actually Geddy Lee's signature across the top in silver.
(not shown was another Jazz bass, Hofner, Kramer Flying V, and Carvin fretless hollow body)
JT
-
Jazzyvee, if I ever do win the lottery & am able to build a custom, I think it will be a 32 scale Series I. Not sure of the body style, but the Series I's sounded AMAZING & the 32 scale on Olie's custom suited me very well! I'm sure the Series II's can sound amazing too, but that's just too many knobs for me to deal with! The Series I's sounded incredible with little tweaking.
-
Sam, I used Fotosizer to resize my pictures. It's a free download. I had to use a couple of different size settings to get the optimum size & stay below 150K, but most are 1200 X 900. For some reason they come out much larger in the post than resizing them with Photoshop, & with Fotosizer you can do dozens of pics at once & it takes only a few seconds.
-
To all, thanks for the compliments on the shirts! I'm glad you like them & glad I was able to get them! John, your memory of the details of the collection is amazing! Thanks for the info!
Mike's Geddy Lee Jazz definitely deserves honorable mention! Thanks for bringing it out Mike! Sorry I didn't get pics of the other non-Alembics, the time just passed way too fast!
-
Here's another pic. Can everyone identify their peghead? :-)
-
I'm working on editing the video clips into a composite documentary of the Gathering. Hopefully I'll have that done in the next few days.
-
Rusty , I have often thought that a Custom Series I Distillate shape with master volume would be cool. One could chose between the original Distillate shape and the newer style with slightly extended upper horn .
-
Great pics! Beautiful basses! And a bunch of happy looking folks!
Congrats!!!
-
Hallo, Christian, it is your Bruder! My bass is the Series 1 with master volume on the right, bubinga front, back with bubinga in the neck.
-
Rusty, thanks for the heads-up on Fotosizer. Unfortunately, it's only for Windows and I have a Mac....
-
Rusty, my custom is actually a 34 as is my spalted maple. I think it feels shorter due the 3/4 body allows the neck to sit a little more centered to the player than a balance K or full suze omega.
-
I was misinformed Olie. Someone told me it was a 32. It was hard to tell with it up under my chin! LOL!! :-)
-
I would like to check out a Series I/II 3/4 body as well in a Standard Point or an Omega , 34 or 32 .
-
Thanks to all my friends in Texas, lets do it next year for sure,
Still droolin
Sir David T
-
Wolf, the one thing I think that surprised me the most about attending my first gathering was that I didn't come away from it thinking that I had to get another Alembic. As truly amazing as all the other basses were, playing them re-enforced just how much I love my SCSD! I definitely made the right choice when I bought my SCSD, it is perfect for me! There was no Wood Envy on my part, just a sense of pride & honor that I got to meet some exceptional new friends & that they let me play their incredible instruments! If I ever have the means, I would love to have a custom built but for now I am completely happy with my SCSD.
-
Rusty ,
You do indeed have a wonderful Alembic. I have felt the same after our gatherings . The pride and honor of meeting exceptional new friends is a concept that I share with you in appreciation of our Alembic Brother and Sisterhood. Upon leaving a Gathering during my exiting thoughts I already look forward towards ;
Next Time .
-
Wolf -
You need to come join us next time. Olie is the king of 3/4 bodies. He has 2 (which I suspect is at least twice as many as anyone else).
JT
-
pardon the brief hi-jack . . .
I think there is a consensus, at least with Rusty, Wolf and I.
When it comes to wanting anything more than what I have (just a Distillate), it doesn't even cross my mind. Me and my girl have a special bond, I know every ding and dent on her. I can tell what sound will come out of her just by the position of the switches and knobs before I even touch her strings. We have sweated and fretted together in good and bad times (there are scars), but she is my forever bass.
When the day comes that I can no longer play, she will be bestowed to my son, at which time his now infrequent relationship with her will become more intimate and the love will grow an go on and on and on . . .
Now back to the Tejas drooling. . .
-
JT
Thanks , perhaps if next time I can coordinate a visit in Austin with some relatives it would be awesome to join you all.
Pauldo , I can relate to your words as well
Wolf
-
That was beautiful Paul. Same here.
-
Right On Pauldo! There is no shame in Alembic monogamy!
Wolf, I'm already looking forward to the next Gathering too, & their will always be a room for you at my house if you want to come to Houston & ride up with me!
-
Rusty ,Thanks . that is really a nice invitation. Thanks so much.,
-
This is just awesome! Looks like a great time was had by all. Here's to long, happy jams for the Alembicians of the Lone Star State!
-
You made me smile, Rusty. There is no shame in Alembic monogamy!
True, all of us have a favorite, but I would offer also Variety is the spice of Alembic life.
Otherwise no one would attend the gatherings.
-
..... and the divorce lawyers would be penniless :-)
graeme
-
John, I would drive to Dallas just to play any one of your amazing collection, but have often used your quote Variety is the spice of life myself! I'm sure if I had more than just my SCSD it would be a similar situation as when I had my 2nd son. I was worried that having another child would take away from the wonderful relationship I had with my 1st son, which of course, it didn't, & now I wouldn't trade my 2nd son for all the Alembics ever made!
-
A lovely collection of instruments; always amazing to see a bunch together (though I think the Chicago gathering still holds the record for most Alembics in one place that isn't Rami's closet).
Peter
-
I cannot see the pictures anymore??
Oliver (Spyderman)
-
Wow; major damage from the picture gremlin.
-
Yeah, the Texas gathering shots are too captivating to lose forever. I noticed some of my pics from the solo bass night thread are gone, too. Double bummer!
-
I will repost them after my Father's Day nap! :-)
-
Hey Rusty -
You may want to post one or two or three per post. Don't know if that has anything to do with it, but it's worth a try to avoid it happening again.
JT
-
OK, back from seeing the new Superman movie (it was great!) so now I can repost the pics. Great suggestion John, I'll do a few per post!

Thanks for reposting the pics!

You're welcome Dave! I finally finished editing the video & it has been uploading since this morning but isn't available yet. I will show it to the attendees first to get their approval before posting the link on here. It is a private posting right now that the general public can't see it.

Just watched the video Rusty, very cool! I have no problem with you making it public.
-
Thanks Olie! Stay tuned......

OK folks, I got the approval of the Texas bunch to post the video. It will remain Unlisted so that it doesn't show up in any public searches, but you can access the video here -

The audio is distorted in places because the camera was too close to my amp, but you can see some amazing basses in action!

Cool video. Rusty I noticed the neck on one of the bass you were playing towards the end of the video looked like it had only 3 neck lams with a thick dark wood lam down the centre. Can't say I've noticed that before, Is that a huge slice of ebony by any chance?

Thanks Jazzyvee! The bass I was playing was Olie's Custom. It has 3 purpleheart & 2 ebony laminates in the neck, but on the video it looks like one wide ebony strip. It played AMAZING, but I struggled a little with it because the strap was really high from what I'm used to. You can read about it here -

Rusty that was great. Thanks for sharing.
What camera did you use?
It looks like the whole group had a real good time - another successful Gathering! :-D
-
Thanks Pauldo! I used a Panasonic HDC-TM90 & shot in 1080p. It usually does great audio, I use it for my band all the time, but I'm usually not 5' away from my amp like I was at the Gathering.
