Title: Old man from the land of the fen tiger buys Alembic
Post by: jonnyalembic on March 22, 2004, 02:10:54 PM
Hi all,

I've already introduced myself on a general post a few days ago and embarrassed myself by getting the serial no. wrong on my request for info!!  Thought I ought to introduce myself properly - so hello everyone. I've just bought a '92 Elan (Walnut/Maple) and will live happily ever after I'm sure.  I have a couple of questions:

- What string gauge would you recommend?  Its currently strung with 40-100s but I notice in another thread that Mark Kings that are sent to UK are usually 30-90s (ultralights).  Not that bothered as strings suit but interested in any opinions.

- Also anyone know why Elans were discontinued?

Thanks for all your help

Jon

Hi Jon; I would image that the players here employ a wide range of string gauges based on individual preference.  In past threads it has been well documented that we do use a wide variety of string labels and string types.  So my recommendation would be to try various gauges until you find the one that best suits your playing style.

Welcome again, Jon.  We'll forgive one typo but that's it!  Just kidding.  I did enjoy your Elan photos.

As Dave says, your string question has as many answers as people who respond.  Personally, I use 45 - 105 Dean Markley Blue Steels.  The main reason for those gauges is simply that's what I've grown accustomed to over time.  The Blue Steels I picked because I like the feel, they stay in tune, and they sound good.
