Hi everyone,
My name is Brad--I've been a bassist for 16yrs
(over half my life... am I really that old alreardy?...eeesh!)
I've played fender mostly-
currently I've got a '75 jazz ,a '72 P-bass, '74 ric ......and no alembic!-- I am just here dreaming for now.
I don't know as much as some of you do about Alembics , but, the few I have had a chance to play were beyond words -- I've generally never really cared for active electronics but Alembics seem to have a tone all to themselves-
Always wanted one , then one day I was browsing the site and saw a picture of one with a buckeye burl top and back (with matching cavity cover...crazy!)
and now I have to have one !
a work of art!
I've been kinda lurking around here for a little while reading and learning and have found that there is nothing but a bunch of upstanding individuals here!
And if you guys don't mind me popping in from time to time and asking what might be a dumb question -
I think it would help me in my quest for the perfect Alembic for me
CHEERS! Brad

Hi Brad ...welcome to this club of Alembicitis patients. Don't panic ...brothers will care about you, the one more wacko as the other but ...dont mind that ...most of them are rather friendly and very tolerant.
Mind you ...there is NO such thing as a dumb question, only dumb answers.
I'm absolutely great in giving dumb answers!
Oh ...well!
It's a great thing to have you with us. Wander around and ask.
Welcome!!!

Hey Brad
Welcome to the club. Feel free to ask away If you can't get the answer here there is none. Go to the thread What other basses do you play and post your Fenders there. One thing about this site is everyone loves to see pictures.
Peace
Rory

Howdy Brad!
Let me do some math ..... hmmmm ...... let's see ..... 16 years = more than half you life? Heck, I can't even remember back when I could say that, and I'M NOT OLD!!!! So, of course it follows that you are a mere pup with many years of playing (if your lucky an Alembic) ahead of you. Welcome and good luck on obtaining your first Alembic. I got my first one a little over a month ago and I'm already designing a custum Further in my head that I think will soon be ordered.

Welcome aboard Brad!
upstanding individuals Please, don't spread that around. Some of us have reputations to maintain! It is nice to have you here with us. Just be careful of The Bad Paul, especially if stockings are involved

How is life?
Bumped into spotlights lately????

Thanks for the warm welcome guys,
ibpesq- I don't think I'm old yet.(29)- I just realized that I started playing at the age of 13 in jazz band and well- I've never done the math before today-- time moves like a hurricane chasing a subway train (allman bros)
First question for you Alembic guys-
How do I justify spending more money on a bass than on my womans ring -to her?... haha
I have no problem justifying it to myself--
I mean, I could EASILY by a doublebass for more
I'm sure someone here has been through this-
I just wanna hear some good lines I could use to start warming her up to the idea.
She's cool about EVERYTHING but I could see an Alembic ($$$) turning into The other woman

Brad,
Here's a few ...
1. I always wanted to be John Entwistle, and here's my chance.
2. You bought your sewing machine for $5K, so I get my 5K gift too. (I actually said this to my wife ...)
3. Well, I can buy either 10 Fenders, or one Alembic. One Alembic takes up less space.
4. Your ring cost two months salary. My bass only cost, uh, three. That's fair, isn't it?
5. If I buy this, I won't have to buy another bass again. (note: this won't hold water later when you buy yet another Alembic. Trust me.)
6. I want the best, so that's why I'm marrying you. (OK, it has nothing to do with a bass. However, it has everything to do with convincing her that an Alembic is a good thing. Nothing like flattery to change her mind.)
7. It's either this or a new Corvette. Which should I buy?
8. All the other bass players have one.
9. Let me buy this and I promise the bachelor party won't include strippers. Really. No, really.
10. I have to get one before Danno and Oliver buy them all up!
11. It's not the other woman, it's an adventure!
Best of luck!
Alan

$5,000 for a sewing machine!!!???!!!
You can get one at Sears for $40!

If you're still just engaged get in now! You have to be more convincing once you're married. That's when they change from my woman into senior management.
Anyway welcome Brad. Pop in anytime with dumb questions, dumb answers, or just whatever comes to mind.
Alan, were those Korean dollars? How about a picture of that sewing machine.

I'll give you the same advice I gave Dino; give her a more expensive option.
Honey, I can't figure out which to buy. This new $15k Harley or this $5K Alembic. I suppose I wouldn't need insurance on the Alembic and I could use it year round and not get hurt (usually!).....
Hey Paul!! Things have been hectic trying to get the business moving along. I realized I had been away from the club for too long. Will you forgive me???

Yes, pics of the sewing machine! And a wav file to hear it's tone!
-
Brad,
welcome to our family and congrats on your Alembic. But plse, show us some photos.
I got my first Alembic last year in June, a Spyder4. The Spyder design of John Entwistle has always been my dream instrument and with the Spyders you could get the as near as possible exact recreation of one of the originals.
Many greetings from Germany
Oliver (Spyderman)

Okay, this thread needs only two more obscure trains of thought to be the new Attention Deficit record holder.
Brad, welcome to the friendliest happy-home for the string slingers on the web! (I don't know what that means)

Brad,
Bracheen's right - do it now before you get married. Tonight my wife told me she'd never heard me talk about an Alembic til I bought one, which is true. However, I've always wanted one, particularly after hearing Stanley Clarke and John Entwistle playing them. You could do what I did - just buy it, and explain later. Remember, it's easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission, and possession is 90% of the law!
Dave - yes, 5K for a sewing machine. It's a Husqvarna, and it sews, literally, by itself. My wife can even download a bitmap image, save it to disk, put it in the machine, align fabric in it, and it sews the image into the fabric by itself. She also bought an electronic tablet and new computer for her crafting stuff. The way I saw it, it was worth at least two Alembics to me! BTW, pics to come soon ....

A Husqvarna sewing machine????Wow! I have a Husqvarna chain saw and it is fantastic, but I didn't know they made sewing machines. I will now be looking at my saw a little differently as I think you just emasculated it ajdover......
PS, no it doesn't have a bobbin thingy!

5k sewing machine ...haha!
I think I'm gonna use- ...it's an adventure..LOL!
Thanks aj
And just to clairify- I don't actually own an Alembic yet -- but with the great one liners I've gotten so far ,I'm well on my way.
Seriously though,
I'll try and get some pics up of my current basses
in the proper thread.
Also, I just noticed there is a new feature bass up on the home page today--
THAT IS WHAT I WANT....WOW!
I can't get enough of that buckeye burl!
If I wear a size ten hat.... what size stocking would I buy?
