Title: Thinking about Tan Pickups
Post by: mica on March 02, 2012, 06:22:51 PM
Tony cast up a sample of the tan pickup and we're thinking about making them standard on the Inside-Out Brown Bass.

I like how it looks with the Myrtle top.

Very cool!  I'm imagining what it will look like with the hardware, strings, and knobs in place; and I think it will look great.

OK, yeah, that's very nice - but I think I'd rather see something closer to the walnut.  Or maybe the mahagony.

It's kind of interesting, but the line won't form until you bring back caramel!

The Custom Build  Series II that is still in  a hypothetical stage in my mind would most likely have the old  Clear Amber pickups.  I have lots of KOOL ideas and plans. ______

sorry to disturb your mind but IF it was my project, I would have standard black pickups because this color looks like vanilla ice cream and do not put value to the light figured wood.
It's my taste, IMO ;o)
Just a question: what wood for fingerboard, is really a cream fingerboard too ? Or is it scotch ?

The color is very close to the color of the Myrtle top wood of this bass, a very slightly green tinged tan. It's not for everyone, but I'm sure it will be something that is perfect for some instruments. I think I would like to see some Mahogany knobs to keep the serene look. There is nothing wrong with vanilla, unless you like chocolate (or peppermint, like me!).

Caramel, well, there is a bit of a debate on the exact color. The original color was pretty close to the tan color here (perhaps more of a diaper color if you catch my drift). During the 1973 oil embargo, the source of the raw materials changed, and the color took on a deeper, reddish hue. Of course, now, years later, the colors have all aged. I'm still trying to create a color similar to a Kraft caramel (search Google images if you aren't familiar with this confection). I will certainly announce once I achieve it!

The fingerboard on the bass pictured above is Ebony. All instruments in finish have the fingerboard protected with masking tape.

Clear Amber pickups had the shield in wrapped copper tape. We also had some clear purple pickups, I have a few in my collects of odds and ends.

Mica , thanks for the comment regarding the Clear Amber pickups.   They have been still haunting me ever since the loss of this Bass ;

Clear purple ?!!
 That just makes me smile . :D
Do you know if any instruments had the clear purple pickups ordered/installed ?
