Well, I finally got my first Alembic from the Bass Centre in London on Saturday. I went for the Mark King Standard model (New, but the original shape one) and they did a real good deal for me. I have to say that it's all I expected and more. Beautiful walnut top and sounds/plays like a dream. First guitar I've had with LEDs and they seem fun. Well, must get back to her.

Hi Alan and welcome to the club. There's now quite a few UK members registered, even one or two in london. Watch out for the other europeans though, they're all mad, especially the Belgians;-)

Hi Alan,
Welcome t't'club from a mad Yorkshire member. I'm still awaiting my first Alembic (guitar, not a bass) though she is being built right now.

Welcome to the club, Alan, from stateside. I don't know if our craziness can compete with the Europeans. Here in the Colorado mountains we blame our diminished cerebral function on the thin air. Works for me. Enjoy your MK.

Hey Alan:
Greetings from the left coast, an hour south of Alembicland where we will proudly match our regional insanity with anyones'. Welcome to the club and let me second Paul tbo's motion: Post some pictures!
Bill, the guitar one
-
Not to be left out in the insanity department - let me welcome you, Alan, from Neonopolis, Las Vega$$, Nevada.
By the way, did someone mention pictures?
Tom, another guitar one =)

Hi Alan
I gotta say, I'm perfectly sane. Posting pictures is good therapy for these other loonies. I don't need it cause I'm sane. A pint a day is good for the mind. Would like some pictures of the new MK though. Why not throw in a photo of your amp for us sane ones?
Sorry, gotta go medicate.
Sam

Thanks fellow Alembian's. I will take some pictures over the weekend and post them. Regarding rig, I have posted a question elsewhere, but will takes some photo's of these as well.
-
Hi Alan, from closer to home - I'm also in London, and also bought my bass, an MK sig, but with quilted maple top and no LEDs, from the Bass Centre back in 2001. Maybe I'll see you around London sometime - you don't see many Alembics around here, so I'm sure we'll recognise each other! Anyway, enjoy - Alembics are really something else, arent they?

Hi Karl,
Just checked out your web site; cool recordings. I see you play close to my side of town (I live in Richmond) so I will see if I can the Earls Court gig.
Alan

OK, some initial pictures. Not too great as they are taken indoors with a flash and does not really do justice to the finish.

What an amazing looking instrument. One of the nicest walnuts I've seen. Very cool!
-
Alan:
WOW! Absolutely gorgeous! The grain makes it look as if the bass is jumping into hyperspace! Enjoy.
Bill, tgo

Fantastic looking bass Alan. You're one lucky southerner ;-)

Greetings from Florida, Nice bass Alan.
-
wow that is nice congratulations and hello fron Newcastle
-
Hi there Alan.
Just add my comments from Yorkshire - what a gorgeous bass! Does she sound as good as she looks?
Enjoy
Rob
-
She sounds every bit as good as she looks. I'm really getting to grips with the Q switches and am quite astounded at the range of sounds I get.
-
Alembic Tone variations are nearly endless. Its nice to have the tones of.....a Rickenbacker, a Jazz Bass, and a Stingray.....all in one bass.
-
Welcome.Greetings from Indy. You must be as proud of that beautiful MK standard as you are of your fellow UK'er Dan Weldon in winning the Indy 500.He drove a helluva race.
-
I actually watched the race and was pretty impressed by Danica who only seemed to lose the lead trying to conserve fuel; but then again it could be argued that she was only at the front because she gambled on not taking the pit stop on the penultimate yellow flag race condition. Whatever, she could sure race that thing; better looking than Nigel Mansell to boot.
-
I suspect an old boot would be better looking than Nigel mansell ;-)
graeme
-
Steady on; he's one of Britain's finest!
-
So is John Hurt but that doesn't make him pretty
Sam
-
Steven Fry anyone?

Well, after two years we got the web site going. Unfortunately, the pictures were taken 1 week before I got my Alembic and I'm having to leave the band as I have an assignment coming up in the states!!!! The best laid plans of mice and men.

Paul
PS the MK looks awesome :-)

Hey Vipa, I didn't know you had an alembic . Everyone in UK, if you need a mortgage, Vipa is very helpful
Hi Karl, I've enjoyed Harambe's website for a while now, never seem to find out about your gigs until after they've happened though. Do you post the gigs up on the site regularly?
Hi Alan, stunning bass - that top really catches the light nicely.
-
Awwww Shucks.... thanks Steve (I'm blushing now!) :-)
-
Alan:

There are a few Alembic Owners in the Midlands too. I know of two other Alembic owners. I personally have a Stanley Clarke Deluxe and an Europa 5 and now awaiting delivery of an Orion guitar.
I too got my SC Deluxe from the Bass Centre about 3 years ago when they were selling them off cheap.... ( but not dirt cheap).
I got the Europa from a private sale off one of the forum members here. ( actually he even let me have a play on his Series II bass) now that was an amazing instrument!!! However I could imagine its very fiddly trying to dial in a specific sound very quickly.
I know it took me ages to get to grips with the tone filters on the SC but with the added CVQ and 3 position switches and all the other knobs
you could be twiddling for ages to fine tune the sound.
Both are fantastic instruments in every sense of the word and I'm looking forward to the guitar, having never even seen nor heard an alembic guitar in the flesh its gonna be an interesting experience.
I am very particular when it comes to guitars so I hope this leap of blind faith works out well for me.
I plan to take this new one on the road with me next year with my band so look out for it.
If you guys are doing any gigs around the midlands area let me know I'd love to come along and see/ hear your band sound and instruments.

Hey Alan, JV and all. Another Brit here. I'm based in Birmingham but work in London 3 days a week. Just got my first Alembic after 25 years of playing (a secondhand Spyder 4 - 4/50 - thanks Senmen whereever you are!) I think I'm hooked as I've now got my eye on a Stanley Clarke in PMT. See my post about a dozen mroe recent than this one for pics of the Spyder.
-
hi Rimskidog, I have had a look at that SC in PMT afew weeks ago too............ ;-)
Having played that Standard model in PMT and my SC Deluxe, I would prefer to go for the Deluxe model if I was getting another one.
All the best.
You are only the 4th person I've heard of with an alembic in Brum. I'm sure there are more but I've only ever seen mine at a live gig. so far. :-)

Hey Jazzy,
For what it's worth, I bought my Epic from the Bass centre in Brum when I worked in bournville in 1996. However, all the live gigs I played were out in the sticks - Ludlow, Worcester, Stourport etc.

Hey Alan!
Damn fine bass you've got there - I love the grain! The King used to have one fairly similar, I seem to recall (from a picture on the cover of Guitarist magazine, about 12 years ago).
For what it's worth, I'm a fellow southerner! Until 3 years ago, I'd lived all of my life in Luton - certainly not a town where you could ever seriously consider owning an Alembic (well, not for very long at least)! Now (thank God), I live in the wonderful city of Hannover in Germany and have consequently just accquired my first Alembic (Rogue).
I'm quite new to the forum too, but they're certainly a good crowd here.
Hope you get lots of enjoyment out of your new bass.

I'm playing a gig in brum on the 4th February at Ipanema's on broad Street, we are on stage around 8pm so pop along if you are are near brum, the more the merrier. Musically it will be Jazz-funk stuff from the likes of GWJ, Marcus, Clarkee, Billy Cobham etc

Longtime Alembic fan and player. I can't find my original intro so here's the long awaited follow-up.I finally got a pic of the cream of the crop of my basses so to speak. This part of my house is the tone lab. If the pic loads there should be (L to R) a Doug Irwin fretless, a small body medium scale series 1, a Modulus Q5 TBX, a standard point long scale series 1 and an early Q6 TBX. The stack of speakers are Alembic single 15's and a Meyer USW-1 on the right. There's also an F1X in the rack on top of the Meyer. Hey, when you play in a Dead cover band.............-hub

Nice collection!
Any reason why you're not telling us about the bass that is hiding behind that Q6? Otherwise it looks as if it were a Q7.
-
looks like a shadow to me Adriaan. Still a0 very nice collection though.

Moved to my home computer with the much better screen - and it's indeed a shadow ...
-
Very, very nice. I was contemplating a Quantum 6 to compliment my Stanley Deluxe...I presume you would recommend it?
