Title: Hello from vancouver!!!
Post by: peoplechipper on March 09, 2009, 11:24:36 PM
Hi, this is Tony in Vancouver BC, I bought a 1981 Distillate about a year ago after owning a Fernandes copy for about a year; I thankfully found the real thing for sale...and thank my lucky stars every day...when I started my band (RUMSFELD...the scariest name we could think of!) I was gonna play guitar, but every bass player I knew was otherwise occupied or scared...and now I love playing bass; mind you, I have played bass and owned other basses before; just none like this one! I probably play a lot different from many on this forum, in that I play in a sludgy-punk/rock power trio (like Killdozer, if anyone knows them) with stainless strings and a pick for maximum attack and grind...I am thankfull that this seems to be a happy and inclusive family here, and I'm happy to join in....Tony.

Welcome to the club from Scotland Tony. There are several members playing a similar style to you so you'll fit right in. let's see some pics of your distillate.

Hi Tony,
Welcome to the club.  When you get a chance, post pictures of your bass.

Welcome Tony

I love the Distillate.  What is the top wood?

Welcome Tony
I also own an 81 Distillate... What a great bass, isn't it?
I agree with the others, get us some nice pics and specs of it please!

Whatever you play its all good. I play in Marra's Drug (formerly Doomtree) a heavy punk influenced band with Steve Zing of Mourning Noise, Samhain, Son of Sam and Danzig fame. I play Alembics proudly and by choice. You'd be surprised how many rockers played Alembics. Welcome.

Thanks everyone!!! I will post pics soon...my bass has a Bubinga top...another bass I saw pics of here said it was burl bubinga that looks like mine, though the wood card just says Bubinga...
It IS a great bass; why don't they make it anymore?

Tony - that's the nice thing about Alembic, they WILL make one as a custom order (pretty much everything is custom order anyway).

The Distillate body shape seems to have gone out of fashion, same as the Spoiler. The original Distillate balances more or less at 3 o'clock for a 32 medium scale, and the second version with a longer top horn will probably sit happy at 2 o'clock (but again for 32). The electronics evolved into the Europa package, which replaced the pup selector with a pan control - but you could still order it with a pup selector.

Ahhh...I see. It's just not on the current standard body list...Funny, as the series 1 is more dated of a body style(but I do still love my Fernandes copy as a backup)...I could see a balance problem with the Distillate if it was 34, but my 32 hangs pretty good with the shorter horn...anyway, I'm real happy with it, untill I feel the need for another Alembic!

Hey Tony,
every time I see your screen name I'm reminded of poor choices in evidence destruction in FARGO

intentional?
very Tarantino ( oh boy, alliteration)

Actually, it was a description by a friend (who used to play bass with Matthew Good) of my bass tone...my old drummer said my bass was always trying to chew his head off too...wimps.
Tony.
