Title: Some of my collection
Post by: Michael Ichiyama (ichinumba9) on March 25, 2003, 11:59:16 PM
Here's some of my collection.  The Epic is 1983, The three string EUB is my first attempt at bass building.  i just finished it about two months ago.  The reason for only three strings is because that piece of wood was some left over purpleheart and I wanted to see what I could make out of it.  Also the wood combination of the bridge is where I got the inspiration for my custom Epic now being built.

Hey,
very nice that 3 string! Congrats!
Is the scaling identical as an upright bass?

The EUB is 30 scale.  Very easy on my medium sized hands.

Very nice!  I just went back and reread the threads on the construction of this bass.  A very nice bass indeed.  A set neck bass with Ebony laminations and Coco Bolo top plus the custom electronics; I hope you will give us a report on how this bass sounds.

Keavin,If you ever make it to the Smithsonian in D.C. check out the instrument collection you'll find a 3 string uprite from the 1700/1800's(I'm guessing)So I guess a four string was just as ponderous to those powered wig leotard wearing hippies as a 5 string was to us when they first appeared in regularity. Also last time I was there I believe there was a becvar bass hanging as well. Can anybody confirm?

Barry, which part of the Smithsonian do you mean? Last November I visited the buildings for American history, not sure if that's the same one where they put technology on display (the early work of Edison was amazing to see). I saw just the three electric guitars I mentioned in a previous thread (http://club.alembic.com/Images/411/1831.html (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=8424)).

If you're talking about the art museum, I spent quite some time there a few years ago, but alas no recollection of any musical instruments. But I've seen a lot of older uprights with 3 strings in various museums here in Europe. The 4 string probably dates from the 19th century, when they started using metal instead of gut for strings: up till then I don't think there was much definition in the notes you played on an upright.

While in DC, go to the Corcoran Gallery (near the White House) and check out the Dutch Treat exhibit, which is on permanent display. There's an amazing marble bust of a veiled young lady - check out how the veil and the bust are from the same piece of mable, and yet you could swear it's a separate veil. Very intricate work.
