Title: 94 Epic koa
Post by: adriaan on April 27, 2003, 08:15:01 AM
Finally got a digital camera, so here's some shots of my 94 Epic with koa top (94W8256). It was converted to fretless about a year ago.

Nice fretless...who did the job of converting it?  From looking at the pics, they did a great job!

Glad you like it! It was done by a Dutch builder, Peer Dellen.

After nearly 12 years, I still find myself staring at it - the beauty of the grain, the play of the light, and not least those curves. Mother Nature and Alembic conspiring ...

How do you like it being fretless. I used to play nothing but fretless but switched beack to fretted basses about 10 years ago. I still play my fretless some but prefer the fretted versions.

Let's put it this way ... At the time I wanted to order a fretless Alembic to go along with the Epic, but funds were lacking. I've been playing mostly jazz these last few years, and unless you're Steve Swallow, I don't think fretted (let alone a pick) is an option. Those frets DO get in the way.

So I had the Epic defretted - and it was nice to notice that as much as the 'articulation' had changed, the 'tone of voice' was still much the same. - One thing that was always a problem was to lay down a great big fat blooming sustaining note on the E string, which after the defret job is no longer a problem - but of course the TI Jazz Flats might have a thing or two to do with that.

A year later, a pre-loved Spoiler came into view, so I'm happy to say I can pick fretted or fretless.

Just brought her home from Edwin van Huik's shop, where the base plate under the nut was restored. The builder who did the defretting didn't seem to know how best to lower the nut, so he had just removed the base plate.

The nut looks like new again ...

She's in need of some TLC - a new set of TI flats and a truss rod tweak.
