Title: My fretless
Post by: son_of_magni on July 02, 2004, 05:44:12 PM
Strange thing just happened.  I was posting a pic on the MK section and when I looked at the serial number I realized it doesn't have MK in it, just C.  Well, that kind of makes me wonder... anyways...

I saw a thread somewhere with an Alembic in front of a Mini, but I can't remember where it was   I have a Mini too and I thought it would be a nice backround.  But for now you'll have to settle for my summer car ;)

That's a great looking bass!  And that's a classic car you've got there.  But I really like that wood building in the background; it looks like it has a lot of character.

I really like the styling of the MK.  Hopefully that will be my next one eventually.  That is a beautiful example that you have.  Nice Z as well.  This could start an interesting spin off thread, Alembics & their cars.  There's at least one TVR here and several Porsches I think.

I was the one that posted a pic of an Alembic with a MINI.  I don't remember where that pic was, but I remember talk of cars in the thread.  I think that folks were talking about what gear could fit in what cars or something.

Hey Karl, that's a stunningly beautiful bass! And yeah, gotta love those Z240s, too... But I'd take the Alembic over the car every time! ;-)

You like my woodshed?  Believe me it cost less than the car or the bass.

Anyways, when I bought the bass it was advertised as an MK.  I never really thought about the serial number until I went to post the picture here.  They still have the bass listed on their website:

http://www.basscentral.com/alembicbass/mark_king.shtml (http://www.basscentral.com/alembicbass/mark_king.shtml)

It's the 6-string at the bottom.  The documentation says its a model CLB6.  So I guess it's not an MK, its actually a custom that was ordered with a MK shape?

It's a super-custom, the second of the first version of the Balance Point shapes. The first one was a 6-string fretted Maple. The body is larger than a Standard Point, but balances as a 6-string.

The electronics are Signature, so it's not entirely incorrect to call it a Mark King. Actually, it's pretty rare we make exactly the spec sheet of any model, there's always something custom going on. Your bass is more like a Mark King Deluxe with a custom body shape.

I love that bass - the wood is fantastic.

Mica, thanks for the clarification.  I guess that makes it almost a collectable.  But what Alembic isn't?  Since the pics with the 240 didn't really show the wood, here's a couple closeups...

Just curious. I makes me think of Bonnie but she is made with Clarowood capping. Although you explained me Mica that Clarowood is a Californian type of (dark???Figured???) Walnut.
Is this Clarowood too??
The balance-point with OMega cut-out oon a large body is really THE thing. Although I would prefer an extended upper horn I guess.

This style does have quite an extended horn, which is why it does so well on the balance even with 6-strings. The offset isn't as large as on the new style ( Kevin's Custom (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=7348)), but this horn reaches close to the same place on the neck.

Claro is a kind of Walnut, and both Bonnie and this bass are made from it.

Kind of amazing that this sat on the shelf for 3 years isn't it?  Maybe not many people are looking for a 6-string fretless.  Makes me wonder though, how much input did basscentral have on the design?  Or did they just say 'send me an awesome bass...'?

Hello Karl,

Bass Central was not involved in the conception of this bass. It sat for 3 years in another store, then we took it back in trade, refinished it and offered it to Bass Central; they took it in, and a few days later, you bought it.

I have played that bass, and I also had a hard time believing nobody had puchased it for 3 years.

More and more I am thinking that I was extremly lucky, as I had just come upon an unplanned bit of cash and spent a couple weeks searching for a bass.  I really wanted to move up to a 6-string and I can't play a bass with frets, so it's not easy to find something off the shelf.  From the moment I saw this bass I think I bought it within 48 hours.

After our yearly family 4th of July jam last weekend, one of my brothers told me that was the best he has heard me sound.  It's not clear whether he means my playing or just the quality of the instrument... it must be me, right?
