there's nobody here, I guess, who will NOT understand... all the best to both of you (and my regards to your Spoilers, of course !),
your Christian
-
Glad she made it home fine Flip. I am curious how she sound and feels compared to your Spoilers.
Olie
PS. Christian, now that you've had your new baby a few weeks at home, whats the official report?
-
The Elan sounds brighter with a heavy bottom, the Spoiler sound is similar but with more mids. This makes the sound a bit "mudier" when playing songs as fast as "One" (by Metallica) The long scale and the tone make the Elan sound extreme tight compared to the Spoilers. When I don't need the extreme tight response/sound, I think I prefer the Spoiler sound. What can I say?... love 'em both! (both 3) :-) There is also a difference in sound between the Spoilers, the '87 sounds darker than the '83. Info from Mica: quote:Elan HLB4 90H6003 top: Quilted Maple body: Maple neck: 3-piece Maple, 34" long scale fingerboard: Ebony with pearloid oval inlays body shape: Elan with tummy and elbow cuts peghead shape: Elan Inline pickups: PJZB electronics: Elan (volume, pan, filter, Q) note there are 2 preamps inside the bass, one for each pickup finish: Stormburst hardware: polished brass originally made for: New Seattle Music birthday: not recorded (last date on work order is into spray, May 10th) Original owner was from WA and bought the bass on July 14, 1990. Flip--Very cool-looking bass. [As you may know from other threads, I'm definitely a fan of burst finishes.]
Enjoy!

Great pictures, the fretboard could use some TLC in the cleaning department, but otherwise it looks great for its age.
Wonderful bass Flip!
Wilfred

yes, a real beauty... and very nice picture taking, too. Do my eyes deceive me, or am I right in observing that you are in the quest to get her a twin sister, Flip ? Anyway, best of luck to you,
your Christian
-
You observed right ;-)
But my funds are kinda lackin due to this recent purchase. Have put my Fender for sale though...
Twin sister:

-
very cool... I keep my fingers crossed for you, Flip, you're the man !
-
She sold for ?994... (http://club.alembic.com/Images/411/42436.gif) Didn't get her...
-
I know... watched the last few minutes on eBay. Sorry for you, Flip, these twins would have looked really cool side by side, but who knows what the future may bring up ? All the best,
your Christian (who still did not manage to get Seismic Sue into the showcase section... D'oh !)
-
Flip,
As a spoiler owner (and fan) myself, I nonethless have to admit that your Elan looks badass and beautiful! Does it weigh or balance significantly different than the Spoilers? Final question--which one ROCKS the hardest playing live?
All the best on your newest aquisition.
Rich
-
Hard to say.... they all Rock!
The Elan is best for songs played with a pic, for fingerstyle I prefer the Spoilers. My favorite is the '83 Spoiler, but the Elan is winning terrain. :-)
I haven't put her on the scale yet, but she feels as heavy as the Spoilers (about 4 - 4,5 Kg)
Grab Metallica's Black album and listen to Enter Sandman, that's the sound 100%
Xtreme pumping bass with lots of highs through the Mesa's (http://club.alembic.com/Images/411/42444.gif)
Thanx,

Very nice collection you have there. A question if I may.
I've seen a lot of rock bass and guitar players have their instruments hung very low on the strap.
What are the benefits of playing with the bass hung so low?
Jazzyvee
-
Yeah, nice collection! Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Y',know, (don't take this negatively) ever since I saw your picture above -in your post 528- you reminded me of someone... it's been playing in my subconscious.
It hit me a moment ago that (just in that picture) you looked a little like Riff-Raff (from the Rocky Horror Picture Show) and Michael Bolton!
Again, not an insult! You have an imposing visage... that of a rocker to be contended with!
Again, nice collection!
-
Thanx!
No benefits at all... just cool looks :-)
I think it's easier to play agressive and fast notes with your right arm more stretched.
Hanging the bass higher is definitely more comfortable for the left wrist, but I've learned it this way so my wrist can take the twist :-)
-
Michael Bolton??!
Thanx!
-
Sorry, Flip! It's wasn't a cut! Anyway, he's a good-looking guy... even if he's quite the poser as far as being a serious singer! (And I only see the resemblence in the 1 picture!)
Congrats on the Elan... I see you've been planning it for a while! It seems like a perfect match for you... rock n' roll image and style and all.
And -I also used to have a Quilted Maple Elan... before it was stolen- I think you'll find the Maple body, neck, and top will really cut through the sound more than the Mahogany-bodied Spoilers! Maple has a brighter sound. Have you noticed it already?
-
Yes indeed, it makes a huge difference.
Only the '87 Spoiler has a Mahogany body btw, the '83 has a solid Koa body.
I think the Koa is somewhere in between soundwise.
That was a nasty experience with your Elan I guess...
It must hurt to see it for sale and you can't do anything 'bout it
I hope your new bass will ease the pain a little... ;-)
Cheerz!
Flip
-
That's the plan, sir.
My replacement bass was designed to -among other things- totally smoke my Elan.
Of course, with the Mahogany body, and the Rock Maple in the Neck being out-ratioed by the Mahogany in the neck, it likely won't be as bright.
On the other hand, with the BTCered Coco Bolo on the front and rear, and the Ebony and Vermillion in the neck, it should sound even better -in it's own way.
-
Looking like Michael Bolton wouldn't be bad if Nicholette Sheridan came with the package.
Looking like nobody,
Olie
-
Who'd win a fight between Michael Bolton and Kenny G? We all would, my friends, we all would.
Peter
-
I'm not a fan of either of those guys but I doubt if i'd turn down a gig if they called ... lol
Would you?
Jazzyvee
-
..if you get the call but can't do the gig, please give them my number :-)

The BEST thing about a PJ Elan? Showing it to all your Fender/clone Fender playing friends and having them hear it, then just laughing at them for wasting their money!
'You bought a Sadowsky?!? hahahahah . . . .'

I hope the world is ready for me (http://club.alembic.com/Images/clipartbiggrin.gif)

I always liked your Elan Flip, that Stormburst is totally unique. Sorry for the late compliment!
I hope you like the detuner. I tried them back in the 90's and they just bamboozled the heck outta me. Pushed me into 5 strings, which I love!

-
They're great indeed, but a bit too great for me... I sold mine last year and went for a simpeler setup, at least that's what I thought... I got a TC Electronic G-Sharp, Rocktron Patchmate and Mesa/Boogie Abacus midi switcher:

Had a brief revisit with this bass today @ Edwin van Huik's shop. (I traded this Elan for the Series I last year)
Edwin with his Series I/II signature model:

Kool !
-
Bass brothers.
Looks like Edwin has LED's in his shoes instead of the bass :-)
-
Such LED shoes are handy for walking on a stage covered with cables with little or no gaffers tape to secure them !
