Title: Stereo Series I and more good wood...
Post by: toddharris on March 06, 2010, 09:55:08 AM
Hi All,
Here is a group shot of a few of my pre- 1980 basses - 74 maple series I shorty, 75 Walnut series I shorty, Maple Veillette Citron 1980, Walnut VC 1980 and Koa BC Rich Eagle 1980.  Awaiting the return from Alembic of my Koa 82 which I'll add.  If anyone has a VC for sale, I'm in!

Very nice!  I had a VC guitar about 10 years ago.  It was maple just like your bass.

I love VC's.  Someday when I win the lottery I'll own one.

Todd, unless my eyes deceive me, that center laminate on the Maple VC looks startlingly like Ebony...?

ps- OTiS is headed to NYC this Summer- we've got one show confirmed at Uncle Mike's, and several more we're waiting to hear back about.

Your eyes are really good Otis, though they missed the Macassar ebony knobs which Harvey Citron tells me only were put on a very few basses!!!  Can't wait to see you, your band and hear you play this summer.  Stay in touch, Todd

Todd,

We're heading to NYC very, very soon.  We're waiting for word on a couple other things, but we'll be there in either June or July... possibly August.

Peace;)

Frank

ps- I'm going to send you a few raw tracks of the material we just recorded in Charleston, WV

Hi Frank,
Call me when you are here - 631 807- 9038. If all goes as I'm hoping, I should have my restored 82 Koa Series I back from Alembic by the time you are here.  Look forward to seeing you.  I have 4 good gigs between June and July - all Saturdays. Todd

Todd,

Great to hear from you!  I will put your phone number in my phone, right now- I thought I did that, back at the Gathering, but I must not have done it.

Awesome news about the 82 Koa SI!  So you're selling that 75 SI in Walnut?  That looks like an awesome bass- you seemed so stoked to get it.  Hope you get to keep it- it's always better to keep em than have to let em go, eh?

Great news about the gigs, too- that's almost as hard as finding a vintage Alembic for a decent price, LMAO!

My Series II Six String Bass is treating me great- I absolutely LOVE it.  It's the best sounding Alembic I've ever laid hands on- 2nd is that Maple Epic Beast with the Ebony neck lams- I called her Thunderstick- she went to a guy in Australia.  Wish I could've kept her- she was one of my all time favorite basses.  But it was a small price to pay to get the S2.

If you ever have the chance, grab one, and never, ever let it go!

Peace;)

Frank

Hi Frank,
don't be sorry.  Nobody needs more than a handful of basses - I buy, I sell, I get to try out great instruments and pass them on. For every great instrument I hang on to for a while, there are hundreds more I haven't touched yet.  In truth, I like a long scale instrument best.  Besides, none of us really own anything, just passing through!  Better to get attached to people than things!  Todd

Todd,
Main Drag Music in Brooklyn has had this black V-C for a while. If either of your shorties needs a babysitter, look me up!

What a great post - drove down to Brooklyn and picked up a lovely black VC bass - thanks for the heads up.  Anytime you are on Long Island you can check out the basses! Thanks again, Todd

Hey, Todd,

You're right- I've done the same, over the years, but I've tried to keep my Alembics, if I could.

You're absolutely right about getting attached to people instead of things, even though the same holds true for us all, eh?

Glad you were able to pick up that VC, congrats on that one.  Shawn C. (kungfusheriff) is a sweetheart, isn't he?

The main music store in my town, World of Music, had an 8 String VC in Walnut (from what I recall- it might've been koa, or even scheuda, not quite sure) & Maple for quite some time- I think I might've picked it up a few times, and I wish that I would've had the cash at the time to get it, but it disappeared, and I've never heard or seen it, since.

Hope to see you soon!

Peace;)

Frank

btw- did you get my email with the 5 raw tracks?

Yes, I am most grateful to Shawn - letting me know about the VC was wonderfully thoughtful.  I missed an 8 string VC by a day recently and would buy one in good shape on a heartbeat. Thanks for staying in touch Frank, Todd

Please, enabling other people's GAS is my mission in life. A German lawyer friend has spent a king's ransom on the rare Gibsons I've put him onto. His collection is mindbending in cost, scope and pointlessness. ;)

Anyway, whatever good juju I've shown the two of you gentlemen seems to have paid off...yesterday I picked up a fairly elderly but well-preserved plywood German upright for FREAKING $250 and I'm buzzing. Only took me 12 years to finally buy one of the things.

Frank -- when the CD is done, please drop a copy in the mail headed my way. Can't wait to hear what that bass sounds like in your hands.

Todd -- I went to two SUNY colleges, which you may know are chock full of Long Islanders, so I learned to avoid the place. Kidding. I would love to swing by, time and schedules permitting.

Hi,
Got to play with Harvey Citron in Manhattan this weekend with my band - here is a video link. The bass is a maple 1980 VC
