Title: My new precious - Tiran Porter's 73 Alembic
Post by: count on October 12, 2011, 02:02:15 PM
Just purchased my long-time dreambass. Uploading some pictures they sent me from the shop now, and after Tiran has signed it (yes, I'm actually buying it FROM him) I will upload some pics of that as well. I'm gonna have him sign the back of the headstock, and give it a nice very light clearcoat to protect it. BTW, what paint was used on these old Alembics? So I don't mess the whole thing up with chemical mayhem caused by incompatible paint. Comments are welcomed! And even though Tiran is going to plot down the bass whole history as far as he remembers it I also appreciate any info you guys can give me.

Way to go, Nicolai! That is truly a piece of history, and some serious mojo happening there.

Now the 64,000 dollar question - where's the other strap pin?

Beautiful  Bass . I remember these from the early days. I could speculate that the finish might be perhaps an oil finish but I could be wrong. I would wait to hear a  proprietary response from Mica about compatibility regarding synthetic clear coat finish .  Perhaps a signature on the brass plate would be possible. Congratulations.

I'm curious to find that out myself!
From what I've found on youtube it used to be on the horn. Will report on this as it arrives though. It's on it's way over the atlantic. Traveling first class of course.. In an anvil flight case, hehe..
Here's a youtube clip of Tiran playing it live:

If I were to guess the range of the serial number on this instrument I would think it would be in the range of 73-44 through 73-48.

Or it may not have a number at all!

Hi Michael,

I'm also thinking about serial No.
My guess is 73-44 to 46.
I wrote on  Serial Number / History Requests (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=5426)
73-47 is SSB, 74-48 is SSG.

Answered your post in the other thread Eiji. Thanks! Curious about this archive of yours.. ;)

By SSB/SSG you mean small standard right?

SSB is Short Scale Bass, SSG is Short Scale Guitar.

I pointed out about Alembic logo.
Oldest logos are unknown, I only know 72-01 has no logo ?, 72-02 has shell inlaied cloud.
Older inlay logo as folating A : A is floating in the circle. (72-10 to 73-43 on my archives)
Newer inlay logo as gripped A : a hand grips A with circle. (73-47 to 74-52)
Then the gripped A logo was mounted on a head veneer. (74-53 to 77-720 or 744 ?)
Current logo is detailed cast silver inlay (77-755 to now)

This bass has gripped A inlay logo.
So only 3 basses (73-44, 45, 46) are match in this case.

Looks like this baby has mellow filters(if those are in fact 2 extra switches) very nice bass though!

Congrats, Count!!!

This bass has some serious mojo, and it's good to know that it's going to a good home.

Taylor, the mellow filters didn't come about until a couple of years after this bass was built. This bass has the PF-5 preamp card, whereas the trim pots are mounted on the front of the bass. The PF-6 card is mounted on the rear brass plate, and had four holes to access the trim pots and HX inductors.

The bass does not have mellow filters.  What you are looking at are volume trim pots.  Those are screwdriver set trim pots that are usually found on the rear of Series 1 basses with PF6 electronics.  This bass has PF5 electronics which has those controls mounted on the front.

From what I understand the last bass with PF5 electronics is bass 73-47.

I've wondered a loong time what is actually the difference between the PF5 and PF6?

And btw; mellow filters..?

Eiji, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge on the Logos and Alembics. Just purchased a floating A Logo small bodied bass and I am so glad to know where they fall.  You're the best!   Todd
