Title: Rebirth
Post by: wayne on July 04, 2005, 09:07:51 PM
I know I traumatized some of y'all when I posted the 'Not for the faint of heart" thread showing the first step to the repair of The Dark and The Light.  See if you can find the joint where the headstock was replaced.....

  And a body shot....

Wayne,
The only line I can see is a curved one about 2 inches below the darker headstock lams.

waouw!!!! Soooo gorgeous!
I've been playing fretless bass for years and years before coming back to more fretted areas, but when I see such a beauty, I have some sorts of regrets... Maybe some day, who knows?    ;-)

Thanks Christophe.  I am thankful I was able to get it back.

Olie - I agree.

It is only surpassed in my collection by my 1934 American Standard upright.

I believe it was Mike at Alembic.  Maybe Mica can chime in on which artisan actually did the repair for me.  I remember her commenting that he wasn't happy with it.......

Is the sound the same???  Since I never got to play it fretless (the damage occurred on its return to Dallas from being converted), I really can't say.  Thundering lows, crystalline highs, and sustain for days.  What more can you ask for?

I CAN say that it is, in my opinion (and my wife's) the best sounding bass guitar I have.  Unless the music absolutely calls for fretted, this is my electric of choice.

Just an aside..
Wayne       Is it you who has the Unicorn bass?????
It is probably my all time favourite!!!

Yep George, that would be me.  The Unicorn is my fretted go-to.  Thanks.  All the kudos for that one go to Susan, Mica and the elves as well.

If you know the story, the Unicorn was built with the UPS insurance payment for the damage to the Dark and the Light (shown above).  [If I was tech savvy, I'd find the story here on the board and paste a link.]

What Olie said above is true about the Unicorn as well -  It plays better than it looks.  It was built as a Dream Bass with looks a predominant consideration, but TONE IS TRUMP.
