Title: 1995 Series II Six String Bass
Post by: pasewark on April 24, 2003, 11:39:02 AM
I bought this bass in 1995. Cocobolo top and back. Gold hardware, Neck LEDs. This was a serious instrument. The tone was unbelivable. Unfortunately it was too heavy for me. After a full night of playing, I would often have neck and back problems. So I had to sell it and I got a 4 string instead. I have better pics of this bass somewhere. It truly is a work of art.

That must have been at least 5.9 kg or 13 lbs, I know what you mean :-)

Pasewark, if you are still hanging around here, do you have more pics of it ? I really want to see some more of this beauty in detail.

You sold it, anyone knows where it is now ?

Cheers
Jan

No sign of Donald anymore ....
Maybe this (http://www.bassnw.com/Special%20Order%20Basses/Basses/Alembic/alembic_series_II_cocobolo_6_st.htm target=_blank) was his bass ?
Maybe someone else saw it somewhere ?
It really must be a unique instrument.

Hey! I'm still here! :-}!

Well, I sold my six string to BassNW a few years ago. So its possible they are re-selling it again!

It does look like the one I had. The sound on that thing ws GREAT!

If you don't mind the weight, then definitely buy it, because it really is a beautiful instrument.

I'm pushin 50 and its way to heavy for me.

I called my pals at BassNW and I just found out that they are using a pic of my old bass as an example of what you could order. So it's not available. It would help if I read the description they have prominently displayed on their site.

When I bought that bass in 95 or 96 I did take several pics of it because I loved it so much. Now if I could only find those images!

that is a magnificent bass

the back is cocobolo too?  my first thought was that it had an ebony back, which made my heart leap.  is the back really that much darker, or does it only appear so due an accident of lighting?

Yowza!

I used to work at Bass Northwest. I've known Chad and Evan since I was in high school. They are wonderful people. This Series II has been sold through Bass Northwest TWICE!!!! When it originally came in, it lasted a little more than a month or so. I used to play it as much as I could. I couldn't afford it at the time, so I bought an Orion 5 fretless. It was at least 18 to 24 months before it came back! I had just purchased a Stanley Clarke Deluxe, so again, I couldn't afford it!!!! (I pounded my head against the wall!!!) I wasn't about to give up though- I was in the process of scraping together the $'s then low and behold- someone else bought it!! I wanted to weep and wail like a baby!!!

So, its been about 3 1/2 to 4 years since, and I don't know where she is. Some lucky owner has her. She came with a beautiful case that was air tight- had a hydrometer built in, too. Maybe, some day our paths will cross again. I guess I should start saving!!!

Nice to hear some feedback on this one.
Should the current owner appear on this board, he will be surprised his bass was discussed here. He's a lucky guy !

Janriviere is right! I am very surprised to see my bass here.  I haven't checked out the Alembic website for long time and I was just browsing and stumbled on to this string.  THAT'S MY BASS!

I bought it from Bass NW a few years back, all 20 lbs of it!  It is hard to lift but I bought a huge strap and started working out! Wearing it very high helps.  But, then, I don't play out much anymore -  I'm post-50 and now a garage-bander.  But it sure sounds incredible!

Here's some additional history. I record a lot with it and was getting a serious rf buzz at about 9k.  I couldn't eq it out without losing a lot of the presence, so after consulting with Ron W. at Alembic, sent it back.  He rewound the pick-ups and pretty much much nailed it.   I recall that he said that the rewind configuration ( .. and I'm over my head here...) has become an upgrade to the Series II electronics.  So, what was already an awesome sound got a little better.

If it will upload, I'm attaching a recent picture of the bass in action with its owner.

Thanks, Dave!  By the way, I went home an weighed the thing and, including the brass plates on the back, weighs an even 15 lbs. on my new digital bathroom scale.  ( It wouldn't calculate the % bodyfat though!)  To be perfectly honest, I took off the brass plates and replaced them with the plastic ones that came with it which brings it in at a lean 13.5 lbs.

Chip, welcome to the club.  It's always cool to find a previous owner and a little bit of the history of your instrument.  Congrats on a beautiful bass.

What was I thinking all those years ago..... 6 string bass. Though I did check out a 6 string Elan back then, didn't go for it for a number of reasons. Nowadays I find a 5 string has been is plenty for me.
The large body does suit that bass really well.
