I saw an article on bbc this morning about Simple Minds and in the film clip of the band appearing on Top of the Pops, I noticed the bass player was sporting an Alembic. I have no idea what the guy's name is or what model of Alembic but maybe you can tell. Here are the screen captures.

Based entirely on the vintage of the clothing & a Wikipedia search, I'd say he's either Derek Forbes or John Giblin. The screen caps look to me like he's playing a Spoiler.

And a pretty early Spoiler too, with the pickup so close to the end of the fretboard.

It's derek forbes. here (http://www.simpleminds.org.uk/minds89a.html) he is with a Wal.

I believe its a Vector body style. Or a Spoiler-Distillate with an extended horn.

yes it's a spoiler bass, and yes it's Derek Forbes, a great bass player with very interesting and complex bass lines, as you can hear on Someone Somewhere in Summertime, Glittering Prize, and other Simple Minds' great songs!
This bass is actually for sale on ebay!
Cheers!

It's interesting...I think this guy is liquidating his high-end bass gear. He sold his two Wal Mach I's on ebay last year and now it looks like he's selling (or sold) his Alembic on ebay.

Nice find. Been a big fan of his bass playing on the early Simple Minds albums.
Thanks for sharing.
