A totally unrelated search thre up this intriguing ZZ Top photo on wikipedia..

Can anyone shed any further light? The pic is too dark to make out any details other than the logo. I'd be interested to know what songs this bass was used on.

Very intriguing indeed Graeme. That's the first time I've seen Dusty play anything but a Tele style bass.

How in the world did you find it?

Knowing Z.Z. Top a bit, I would guess this isn't a normal looking bass.
Probably something shaped like a Lightning or something, or even a Tele style Alembic...?
This is making me very curious!!

I do remember Dusty playing a Thunderbird style bass too.

An of course the furry monster bass. LOL

I would imagine you're probably correct though Greg.

Maybe Mica can shed a little light on this photo.

Thanks for the update Mica. It'd be great to see more pictures of this bass if they can be found.

I don't think I have any. The days when photography was expensive, it seems so long ago!

ZZTop are about as cool as it gets.  Their sound is to me, as identifiable as the Beatles and The Beach Boys.  Huge fan, here..and I had no idea he played Alembic.  Dusty Hill most certainly knows tone.

I seem to remember reading that Billy Gibbons uses an F-2B.

I think David Gilmour uses the same preamp.  Another tone king...

I'm a Peavey guy myself.

I've been enjoying La Futura since Christmas. Seems like a return to the good ol' days of tres hombres and fandango.

If you've got a Netflix subscription check out Live From Texas by ZZ Top.  Billy Gibbons seems to be having such a good time that I can't help but enjoy it.

Graeme - thanks for the reminder on La Futura - I'd been meaning to check it out but forgot - finally bought it - great so far! Some interesting bass tones.

The new Black Sabbath album 13 is good too - both 13 & La Futura are produced by Rick Rubin and both seem like a return to more of the core of what these bands were about in the good ol' days but with modern production.

That live from Texas concert is awesome too!
