Might as well start off with the Coco Bolo:

This will darken up even more once the finish is applied.
-
Okay, Chip has plowed through our big cache of Coco Bolo, and found these top two candidates for your bass:
These are freshly sanded surfaces, and look more yellowy-orange than the finished color will be. Both also have a matching back laminate. Of course it will be impossible to perfectly match the other piece you saw on a finished bass, but I think these capture the color and figure requirements well. Let me know what you think.

The color and pattern of the July 04 featured custom is what I am looking for.
-
This was the picture you sent that I was working from:

I wasn't looking for anything close to the Featured Custom from last month - it's entirely different from what I understood you were looking for. So we'll need to define what you want. From this picture:
you indicated that you didn't like the little "eyes" staring back, but the July 04 has eyes all over it:
So I'm thinking you like the larger circular figure centered on the eyes, but not isolated ones that don't influence the surrounding grain pattern as much. Let me know if I've got it straight and Chip and I will go on a wood safari.
-
Exactly! Please ask Chip if he would go on safari again. Thank you Mica.
-
Sorting through those big planks takes a dear amount of time. We found 2 that we think will suit you and surfaced them. Pictures are cropped to close to the are that will be included:

Number 1 has more of the color and overall character.

I think number 2 will be slightly less orange color than the July 04 FC, but it's more erratic and Chip though you might like it. On both, the sapwood will not be inlcuded unless you request it so. Let me know if either one of these is the "one" and Chip can get the body assembled to catch up with that lonely neck.
-
Very nice. Thank you for the extra time spent to find these. Number one is the one.
The sapwood is the white part on the edges?
What do you do for the back of the instrument?
-
Glad we found your wood! Chip will be very happy to get that body assembled.
The back will be a little further down the board. It's nice when we can cut both the top and back from the same board.
-
Yes, it will be beautiful. Take pictures along the way so I can see the progress, if you wouldn't mind. Thanks again Mica.
-
Here's the peghead veneered:

Beautiful!
-
But wait... there's more

-
Aren't those metal wood clamps going to be in my way during my solo?
-
They won't hinder you nearly as much as the lack of strings and electronics will, unless you're a percussionist!
-
Good point!
-
Personally I kinda like the new Alembic tailpiece design. The Standard point and Omega were really getting old and I think the new Fence Post look finishes off the SC body nicely.

-
Sorry, the tail was vestigial, now it's in the carving department:
and lacking that tail.
-
The detail and precision on the coverplates and the outer egdes is astonishing. Thanks for the update Mica.
-
Well, I guess all those special features have vanished and it now look like an ordinary bass:
It's wet in this picture, which makes it look more finished than it is. I think you've still got close to 2 weeks in the finish department.
-
Fabulous wood recipe!
Wilfred
-
Thank you for the update Mica.
-
Now we've finished the preset, and just waiting for the hardware to return from the goldplater. Here's your bass pretty much finished otherwise:

It looks even better in person.
-
It looks great. Many thanks to all. I wrote your mom about the fretboard inlays, considering leaving them off (I have the led side markers to find my way). Can you give me an opinion on that?
Would it look strange to leave them off?
-
Loaded and in line for calibration:

There is 1 new job in front of yours (for our patient friend nikbass). Once that's licked, it will be time for your bass to visit my dad's workbench.
-
It is very Beautful. Thank you for the update.
-
Matt
What a nice bass I love your wood choice selection. I have a very simuliar Series II, give me an update when you receive yours.
Rory
-
Hi Rory,
Matthew has had his bass for a while now. If you check the date on the last post you'll see it was from over a year ago.
Valentino
-
Thanks Val
I guess I was having a senior moment.
Rory
-
Sorry, Rory, but it says right here that you're only Advanced.
Be patient, they will come :-)
-
Bob
You are right! Does this mean no AARP?
