Scarlet's neck is taking form:

This is what will be behind the peghead veneers:

thanks mica
looks familiar.....
lol
-
I'll say. Your inner seven laminates are the same as those on my custom 6-String in progress!
You've got great taste, Flax!!!
-
How can you afford these things?!?!?!?
-
Actually, this one will be replacing Scooter (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=7679) which will be for sale shortly. Seems that there was a communication error as the neck width on Scooter, and it's the normal comfort taper, rather than Jeff's custom narrow taper.
I always look on the bright side. Since Jeff likes the sound of Coco Bolo better, Scarlet should be a better match to his tastes, and some other lucky dog will get to own the Scooter bass.
-
mine was first mark-lol
dear friends,
I've been wanting to let people know why i never posted photos of scooter. But i decided this was between alembic and me and when the time was right mica would let you know
This is why alembic is alembic and another reason why i love these people
there was an unfortunate oops on the work order
twas an honest mistake. i knew as soon as i opened the case that there was something wrong and val felt terrible about it.i tried to play it and its just too big for me wittle hands and fingas
Every bit of this was handled professionally and amicably. yes i was disappointed, who wouldn't be? There was no reason to bark at anyone. This was an honest mistake. There was never any discussion about reworking the neck etc. mica called me and just said we will make you another
scooter was put back in its case and was returned 3 weeks ago to the mothership.
IT'S AN AWESOME LOOKING and sounding bass. words cannot describe the burl maple top woods. The controls gives it a lot of flexibility. it seems to have less smile with a wonderful unique smooth sound with TI flats on it
so if you thinkin about buying it- you should
so i felt we should let both scooters rest in peace and named the new one scarlet which was almost the name of direwolf.
there was only one way in my eyes to match the beauty so
i will tip my hand
scarlet tribute bass
quilted coco bolo top wood- the billet looks much like stanley's anniversary cotm
regular coco bolo back
qcb/maple lam/purple pin/maple pin/mahog/mp/pp/ml/cb
skylark carving on the front with a modified tummy carve on the back
same controls as scooter with a treble boost added
red led's with amber on the 5th 12th 17th and 24th
i play a lot in A
quilted coco knobs from THG(courtesy of alembic)
silver alembic logo
volute
peghead veneers to match top woods
scarlet on th 24th fret in mop or gmop.
stay tuned.. this is gonna be a beauty....
i will just have to suffer with direwolf.. lol
its better to have an alembic while waiting for the next alembic.
nice threesome this will be
direwolf- my classico- and scarlet
SOMEONE IN THIS SITE NEEDS TO GIVE SCOOTER A GOOD HOME.........
THANK YOU ALEMBIC.
-
Wow, what a story. I don't think I'll ever hear about something like this again. What a great company to do business with. People that actually care. It's kind of like finding a great mechanic, and you'll drive clear across town to get his service despite the guy right around the corner. I'll get to order mine one day and I look forward to every detail of the transaction.
-
Hey Flax, wanna race (again)?
Bill, tgo
-
yet another JF build to look forward to. Can't wait to see the finished result. Quilted cocobolo sure looks amazing. You're definitely going to beat me on this build as it'll be another year before I can place my order;-)
graeme
-
Wow that must have been a kick in the gut. Glad to hear it's being taken care of though.
-
Bill,
That's not funny.
Maybe we should start a pool: whether Flax gets his third bass before either of us receives our instrument?
Bradley
-
i'm in.........
-
thats a very nice neck! the kind of neck that makes a gorgeous stinger, cause all the bright colour in the middle run right through the tip of the point!! think about it while its early! what body type are you thinking of?
-
its a tribute body jags
set neck
-
Hi Jeff,
Can I start by applauding you for showing such class in the way you informed us of the Scooter incident. In a world where many seem to vent, big time,at the slightest prompting, your post is a true example of what it is to be civil, and of why this club is what it is.What a Gent!!.Huge respect to Mica and all at Alembic for their customer committment.Heart warming.
Belated congrats on the Classico too. We're with ya for the long haul as always,as you 'suffer with Direwolf'.Oh imagine the pain!! ;o)
Here's hoping the 'Holy Trinity' will be complete before too long and that Scarlet will be all you wish for.
Best Wishes,
Simon.
-
mica
any woid on the qcb yet?
-
No word yet - but you know I'll be posting it here as soon as it's available. Hopefully it will be no later than next week.

please see my email

Here's the Quilted Coco Bolo top, freshly cut (so a little lighter than it will ultimately be):

Two heads, back to back, with two doves sitting on top of their Don King hair. (Am I twisted, or what?) Awesome, Flax, just awesome!
Bill, tgo
-
I think that might be the most spectacular piece of wood I've seen yet.
Jonathan
-
OH MY!!!! How can you decide what to use? There's no place to cut any of that wood away - it's all too gorgeous. You need to reconsider, Flax - how about the first Alembic Bo Diddley body? Just slap on a neck, some p/ups, and spray that bad boy as is!
Peter
-
oye vey iz mir........
that is very bizarre looking....
i think i should just buy these two, have em finished and hang em on the wall...........
-
anyone see a little baby inside the right head?
-
Conjoined fetus, like the nurse in South Park!
Bill, tgo
-
Pass that this way, Bill.
Peter
-
bill
we got the same stuff!!!!!!!!!!!111
i may have to put more of this on the back
-
Boy oh boy. That's a fantastic piece Jeff. You're one very lucky guy.
Graeme
-
Can't wait to get home and look at those pictures on a better computer screen - they already look a-m-a-z-i-n-g on this crappy screen I'm looking at.
-
WOW!
-
Great bass, and looks like there is hardly any taper on the neck from nut to bridge. Must be a dream to play.
How does she balance?
Jazzyvee
-
Flax:
I think the monkey prefers Wolf! lol
Bill, tgo
-
Wow. Just...wow.
-
Happy New Year Flax!
Just noticed that you have a volute on Scarlett. Don't think I've seen one with the std. Alembic crown peghead. Even though I have 'em on my two Orions, I'm always surprised to see volutes...not a industry std. feature...but cool nonetheless. I'm betting the set neck adds a cool warmth to that bad boy that you just can't quite get with a neck-thru.
Stunning, absolutely stunning! WAAAAAAYYYYY nicer than Lesh's late 70's/early 80's era-Irwin that was one of the inspirations for Scarlett! That Classico (as well as Wolfie) is no slouch either!
Cheers,
Kevin
-
Kevin; what's even more unusual is a volute with a crown peghead and back laminates. And I don't think we've seen a good picture of that yet.
-
Even more unusual is the volute on a neck through,
as this instrument is. Back of the peg head
laminates + volute is tremendously difficult to
carve made worse if the wood is stiff and brittle as
vermilion, purple heart and walnut are or really
curly, like quilted coco bolo and quilted maple.
-
Jason; unless my memory fails me again, I'm pretty sure this is a set neck bass.
-
Sooooo hot. Want to touch the bass...
-
Thanks for sharing the additional pictures, Flax...
Truly phenomenal and inspirational!
I love your neck combo/arrangement and your electronics package -both so much like my own.
Take care & happy new year!
-
great quality pictures ... hun hun hun !
-
it is a set neck
i like volutes- it reminds me of stand up basses
leshs irwin was not the inspiration for this bass,
jerry's guitar was.i didnt even remember phil had one until i saw photos of it, musta sucked;lol p pups
the deal was when i went out to alembic 3 yrs ago i asked if they would and susan said one day. i asked to be first and one day they called me and said we're ready. thats how scooter came to be.
Balance is fine- heck i havent even thought about it- its around 2 oclock which is perfect for me
couldnt ask for more on the neck matching wolf=damn close and it plays easy
pierre- will send you micas hires photo
thanks everyone
this is one happy guy!
(Message edited by flaxattack on January 02, 2008)
-
How could you forget that bass...you were @ the Radio City shows in '80, right? LOL! I said ONE of the inspirations, LOL! Jerry's guitar was the original genesis of Phil's as well. It actually doesn't sound bad...it's on a lot of live stuff from the post-Shakedown Street and Go To Heaven Brent-era. Reckoning/Dead Set feature that bass.
-
i was at 5 shows min., either it was really good head food or i spaced on garcia. i am still looking for a copy of the 10.30 show with billy cobham. i just dont recall checking out phils bass. i may have..lol- and i have the dvds for years
btw- baby scarlet weighed in at 12.25 lbs
i bought me a chamois and had a lovely time polishing and staring. the one thing that will never come out in the photos is the depth below the finish. mica measured the fundamental sustain on the A string at a whopping 1min 27 seconds.
longer than a neck through she compared it with.
wolf has a punchy growl- great for rockin
on this bass the note builds quickly and holds.
this is exactly what i was after. a different yet unique sound.
-
There's pix and text/description(s)in the Dead Gear book as well...the Dead Ahead DVD shows it in action.
Wow...12 & 1/4#! I guess that means no semi-hollow core mahogany construction...hope your back muscles are in good shape, LOL! That's where your sustain is coming from.
You got some unique collection there...one better than the other! Lemme know when you get your new Dead-esque band together...might just have to take the trip up to CT to hear/see them bad boys in person!
Cast my vote for the next COTM: Scarlet!
Cheers,
Kevin
-
it is semi hollow! mica thought it was gonna be a tad heavy. wolf is no light weight either
maybe phil would sell me his strap from 74
am almost there on the band
trying to find a drummer
irwin doesnt build basses better than alembic-lol
-
Flax-
Since my bass was heavier (by a substantial margin) than Scarlet, I'm guessing mine must be at least 14 lbs. Too light for Rami, but heavy, nonetheless.
-
Jeff,
It's great to see Scarlet take her place in your collection at long last.I love the volute on the side shot but what a stunning bass from any angle.I hope all the days of waiting will now become countless hours of pleasure filled fret-frottage!.
Best Wishes as always and thanks for posting those gorgeous photos,
Simon.
-
Fret Frottage????
frottage n. The act of rubbing against the body of another person, as in a crowd, to attain sexual gratification.
That's a new one on me! Amazing what one can learn on this site! By the way, Flax, is there a hidden dummy hum cancellor or what? And where is it?
Bill, tgo
-
Why would it have a hum canceller? I don't think those are series electronics.
I already frotted Scarlet, and have photographic evidence of such.
-
Bradley:
You are absolutely correct - my bad. Briefly looking at the large pic above I assumed Series II as I was distracted by the melting lava top!
Flax: never mind
My name is Bill and I'm an Alembic Frottager
Bill, tgo
-
Bill,
I heard that frottage is illegal in Tennessee, Oklahoma, and the District of Columbia.
I'm all for whatever consenting adults want to do in the privacy of their homes, but please don't frott and drive.
-
has my ftc been hijacked?
-
It couldn't last.
-
yes it can last
frottage is only illegal in Oklahoma on Sundays
David T
-
Last night I got out Woody and Big Irv and had a 3-way Frottage. I'm a baaaaad boy! Hey Flax, ever try Wolf and Scarlet simultaneously? Talk about stereo! lol
Bill, tgo
-
I meant the thread couldn't last without a hijack.
-
Only one way to get this bad boy back on track.....
Flax- can you post some pictures of Wolf & Scarlet on a Harley holding a beer?
-
i caught wolf trying to hump scarlet from behind.
he saw her back woods and was convinced it was the real thing...
AAAWHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Where Wolf?
There, There Wolf ... There castle!

nice try
no banana....
-
i just want to say
i love this bass,....
its more than i ever imagined
totally smitten
it gets wowed by everyone who's seen it and heard it
my a string sings for almost 2 minutes. i can hear the vibration in the strings as they diminish
tonality is amazing..
i dont think i will ever need to buy or make another...sorry mica....
-
That's some beautiful wood! But, I think a bass made from that wood should be called Rorschadt. (Just kidding)
Congratulations!

this thing is going to be spectacular, regardless of whichever bass it becomes, but what body type will it be,and any special cut outs? how many strings? 7 laminate neck indicates a 5 string crazy for coco bolo puffs monster!

In other words, it was more out of pity.

Bradley

DOH

Corpus Delicti Rule - you can't use a person's statements against them until all elements of the crime are independently established through other evidence. In other words, a person can't be convicted based on their confession alone, without other evidence. Rest easy, Flax.
Bill, tgo
-
Whew.
I was secretly harboring thoughts though:
If Flax went to prison, then maybe that would delay Scarlet, and I would definitely get my bass first.
Bradley
-
If Flax went to prison, it wouldn't delay his instrument. They'd let him have it, though he would be limited to bar chords! (nyuk, nyuk).
Bill, tgo
-
any updates mica?

Nothing that's postable. When something interesting happens, I'll post it on this thread immediately.

Is Flax going to prison?

The part of the wood you were discussing with Susan earlier today won't fit the peghead in any sort of a graceful way:
Bob had selected a nice all-over Quilty piece for the front peghead veneer:
As usual, it's way nicer looking than the snapshot!
-
mica- peghead is fine
but please see my email
before i enter the twilight zone again
;-)
-
how we doin mica?
-
can i get an update mica?
thanks
-
Sure thing! Since last Thursday when we exchanged emails last, my dad completed the programming for the CNC machine to cut the neck pocket for the body. That means that early next week Bob will run a test body on the new program and we can test fit the neck. If everything's A-OK, then he'll be able to get Scarlet's body routed and do the gluing of the neck to body.
-
Also, the neck shaping fixture was completed:
and the neck taper was shaped. Now we have your favorite medium scale neck dimensions available for any set neck bass. Cool, huh? The peghead veneers glued up:

Flax:
Lookin' good, Shimboy! But I don't think you've got this race won yet. Check out my FTC thread.
Bill, tgo
-
well it sure took long enough bill and i will eat my words on the coco covers....
if anyone is interested mica sent me a high res photo of the front layout, that will not fit in here. shoot me an email if you would like to see it.
its supoib
lol
-
Lookin' goooood!.Permission to salivate and turn a shade of envious green.
If you still have my e-mail I'd love to see the hi-res photo Jeff.
Best wishes,
Simon.
-
om the way my friend
-
Here's that layout of the cuts we discussed a couple of days ago. Bob made the template for the cuts on the NC machine from the program that will be cutting the pockets. As you know I thought he'd already cut the covers out, but he was of course more wise and waited to make sure we'd have the best registration of parts.
One other thing we discussed that you should take note of is the space between the truss rod cover and the neck pickup is smaller than on the DW because the set neck truss rod cover is larger. The distance from the end of the fingerboard to the neck pickup is the same though.
At this point, we're going to wait to hear your approval that these postions are indeed what you want before any more slicing happens. There's only one shot with stuff like pickup covers.
-
its a frkn shame to put the neck on- that spot is so cool..
the truss rod placement is the same as scooter-
no problems there
neck pu is fine
bridge pick up? still weak in the knees- only god knows how much it will affect the sound
but it looks like i will be right over the pu when playing with a pick
so lets go with this as presented
whattyua mean one shot? run out of glue? lmao
-
Flax,
She means that you only get one chance while the wood is going under the knife.
-
really?
duh
-
Well,
I didn't know if you were huffing the glue in your above comment. Always did wonder why your nose was running all the time.
-
Hey Flax,
I don't think my piece of QCB is off the same piece as yours, do you? The grains don't match up at all and there is some sapwood on the edges of my piece.
What do you think? I love yours though. I was jealous at first when I saw yours until I got mine. Now I'm happy as I think they are both niece in there own different ways. I stole your idea and highlighted mine with photo something. But it came out in PDF file.
How's yours coming along? Have you heard anything lately?
Paul
-
I've been talking to Mica about QCB and got the impression that there was only one piece (from which they were cutting all of these slices). My guess is that Jeff knows the story.
dw
-
I know dw, I agree. I thought they only had one piece left but when they came out with mine, it looked completely different from Flax's. So I don't know where it came from, and it doesn't even matter. I know one thing my piece is so beautiful that I am stoked. I can't wait to see it in action! This thing is going to be the bomb. And so is Flax's. His chunk is awesome!

thats funny paul... i thught the piece you got was the one i told them to cut
there was only one slab left... it varied very much from minor quilting to more down the slab
i dont know how much the wood changes as you cut through it though. i was totally surprised by mine as it was not the slightest bit visible from the initial slab photos they sent me.
if you want- send me email and i will send the original slab photos to you. my choice was #3 and you will see it looked nothing like it
not that i am upset- this board is like tripping on acid without eating acid....and i did everyone a favor by only taking 1 piece.... back is reg coco.
bob is handling my bass as its a replacement. he was away last week at a seminar and just got back so i dont know how much it has progressed-
and with mica due soon, i aint bothering to call. i also have a ribbecke halfling 5 string being made for me with the same neck dimensions. i got #2 of their first 5 string production run which should be ready end of month so i am just laying low
mica told me that they thught this was the worst of the 3 they had and put it to the side. when they opened the board up they changed their mind drastically.
mica said it reminded her very much of stanleys anniversary cotm
-
Hey Flax, I'm glad you are here. Sorry for taking up conversation in your thread!
Did you go and pick out your piece? I know what you mean. It must change drastically. But ya, it is like acid. Even when I am looking at it on my monitor if I move my head up and down I can see the difference. I know that is the monitor but I think it is really coming through like that. It is amazing stuff.
I absolutely love my piece but I would trade it for yours cuz yours is equally beautiful. They are both awesome. And I did the same with only taking one piece and going reg on the back. Actually I would like to have the quilted maple on the back but I have maple center piece. I wouldn't mind anyway. I could just seperate the two with one strip of Koa.
My e-mail is daplumma@hawaii.rr.com (mailto:daplumma@hawaii.rr.com).
Please send photos, I would love to see them.
Thanks, Paul
-
This was from a while ago, but here's Scarlet very shortly before entering the finish department:
I've got to time an in-finish photo so that I get it before the bas sis prepped for the next coat. You just can't see much through the sanding.
Looking great though!
-
thanks mica
good to see you back with camera in hand.
roger emailed me from thg. did knob material get over to him? i havent heard back from him as i may want to make a slight change and go to an maple pin stripe along top and sides or maple dot.
looks mighty fine with dust on it-lol

OK, I've let it sink in for a day - I'll try again. Having spent nigh well onto four decades in the near-constant presense of guitars and basses, I think I can say unequivocally that this is flat-out the most beautiful instrument I have ever laid eyes on. I can only imagine what it's like in person. That top is absolutely pychedelic! Congrats, Jeff.

Flax, m'man, I'm struck with the thought that you're a man after my own heart!
I feel a sense of commonality with you, seeing this gorgeous bass with BTC Coco Bolo on the front and back, the gorgeous Flame Maple outer neck laminates, the REALLY cool custom neck (that is very similar to the one on my 6-String custom in progress) AND your custom electronics package. And you're also a fan of narrow string spacing. In many ways, this bass is one of the closest to my two Alembics conceptually, and practically.
Hey, everyone has complimented your new bass on its incredibly awesome top... but wow... the freakin' back is unbelievably awesome as well... let's not overlook that!!!
I salute you sir! You've spec'ed one serious HARD CORE bass here!
-
thanks mark- am, flattered- hey the flaxneck now has its own template..
once in a while you get shown the light....
yeah the back looks great, cant wait to see the plates on the bloomin onion' as i like to call the back, but give credit to bob for the masterful tummy carve and the way those grains came out.
where else does the buyer have such input to spec out the layout of their instrument. and that back piece didnt present itself that well in the original shots mica showed us. great range of coco colors- light dark red orange
I AM ONE LUCKY GUY...
is this the first photo of jason? now when i call he will know who i am;- lmao
in case nobody noticed- i opted for gold plated hardware and roger is making solid qcb knobs with mop dots- no holding back at this point...
-
This is absolutely stunning!
-
Jeff,
You are my new hero.
John
-
Damn, this was just a board last time I got to look at it. Looking real good now.
-
welcome home? sir
-
Unfortunately I'm nowhere close to home, but at least I got a bass.
-
mica
how you making out on the control layouts
thanks
-
mica
its been 3 weeks since you promised control layouts...
-
You'll see them soon. We've spoken since the Sept 18th post, and despite my plans, I haven't been able to do the layout. As I explained in our last conversation, I want to wait to do controls until the custom tailpiece is ready. For the past two weeks, a flu has ravaged our shop (note the lack of posts from me), and nobody has been spared.
-
custom tailpiece?
i havent ordered a custom tailpiece
-
The spacing is custom, so even though the shape is a regular ol' bird, it is in fact, custom built.
-
please explain how the spotting of the grooves
on a regular tailpiece affects how the controls are to be laid out. its not a larger or smaller tailpiece.
makes no sense to me
-
Jeff,
Questioning the elves and their approach to building basses? You know better than that!
The top on your bass is really something to behold, for sure.
John
-
Jeff, the tailpiece is a different size when the string spacing is different. The size of the bird is determined by the spacing of the strings.
I can't do your control layout today, as it's the first Wednesday of the month and tour day. Then I have an appointment this afternoon. If you prefer I don't wait for the tailpiece, I'll do the layout without it tomorrow.
-
do the layout please
-
love it
-
Sweet! Looking very nice Jeff.
-
BTW - James said I had to move everything i{slightly} closer to the pickups. This is for the neck filter to have enough clearance from the edge of the cavity. We're going to attach a small insulator to the side of the cavity, because we're placing it very close to the edge. Heck , you might not even notice the change is so small.
-
no problem with that- i could argue with you...
but james.... NEVER!~!!!
lol
i decided against the nuclear flaxinator control
-
Flax, the nuclear flaxinator control was only supposted to be available on the 40th anniversary series III. Inside sources have shared with me that once you touch the flaxinator knob one should never bite their finger nails again. So chosing against this control was indeed wise.
-
No need for leds with the nuclear flaxinator control, the entire fretboard glows in the dark.
-
here is what happened when they tried the control on
a fender

Hey, Flaxy, it's looking great! And I love the symmetrical control configuration... you're a man after my own heart!
-
that thought scares me
-
any updates mica?
thanks
-
Just a waitin' for the finish to finish curing for the rubout. The hardware is back from the goldplater, everything is falling into place.
-
EXCELLENT- MUE BUENO... HOLY MOLEY,,,,
ACHTOLEEBA....WOOHOO,.,,,SUCH A DEAL,,,,
MONGO EXCITED. MONGO LOVE ALEMBIC,,,
MONGO FINGER ALMOST READY,,,
lmao
thanks boss
j
-
any updates mica....
thanks
-
James is cutting out the SCARLET as we speak. Probably needs 2-3 coats of finish after that. QCB scraps should be down at Roger's. I'm going on vacation from th 15-20, and since that's Thanksgiving week, I'll estimate that your bass would be ready the week of 11-26, should be able to ship out that week or the next.
Getting awfully close there!
-
You're killing me here.
Please don't let Jeff finish before mid December. I couldn't take it.
-
thanks mica
got a gig on the 28th, would love to roll scarlet out for that one,. anything that can be done would be appreciated
thanks
-
best of luck Jeff. can't wait to see some more pics.
graeme
-
i would suspect finals,,,,
the waiting is the hardest part
gonna be 1 yr on the remake....
-
Just in time for Hanukkah!
Mazel Tov
-
You will have a very unique instrument by any standard or desire! This should cover all 8 days plus a few of the other major holidays. Now if only someone else paid for it......
btw I'm coming up on a year since i ordered my fretless. A lot more pedestrian than yours I think.
Congrats!
-
1 year?!?!? That's it?
You're a short timer, son.
-
thats one year for a remake- not a new one
if i add in scooter we are at 2.25 years
you feel warm and fuzzy now?
ps- got your pkg today brad- all 2 pieces of it,.,,
lmao
-
I'll feel warm and fuzzy round about the middle of next month.
I hope that everything stuck put. Did you fire it up?
Bradley
-
not yet brad
over the weekend for sure
the ribbecke sounds awesome plugged in
-
Flax & Brad:
Once it's in your hands, the long build time doesn't seem to matter anymore. It's as if when you can feel the weight, you forget about the wait. Good luck to both of you.
Bill, tgo
P.S. I'm still waiting on the Calton case I ordered for Woody last June!
-
true bill
but
i want it!!!!!!
i know
deep breaths,,,,
-
It's got all the finish now, just waiting for the final curing:
With our cold snap, we will probably wait a week before attempting the rubout on this bass.
-
just my luck,....
lol
great job on the drilling and layout for the controls.
i decided to upgrade the knobs to led;s like my good friend brad's. working it out with roger.
looks like it came out ok.
i guess i will take it....
yeah right
good googly moogly..
-
I keep holding my laptop up in front of my face to look into the detail. It's kinda like the pictures of the inside of an active volcano; intensely hot liquid fire. Pretty amazing!
-
Shiney and swirly. Won't be long now.
Graeme
-
Flax--
That's looking pretty sweet.
And it looks like we're both getting close to the finish line!
-
...but I'm going to beat you.
-
itsa gonna be set NECK and NECK thru to the finish line bradley.....haha
once again if youre heading to the mothership feel free to pluck away.
knobs dont count btw...
the eight days of hanukah start tuesday night.
maybe hanukah harry will stop by alembic on his way over like he did last year. i sure hope the weather warms up out there.,
-
I'm headed to San Jose on the 12th, Santa Rosa is on the schedule for Thurs or Friday.
As far as the finish line goes, I'm thinking that what really matters is possession. 9/10ths of the law and all that.
Can we get a legal ruling? Is there a lawyer in the house?
-
Yea, there's a lawyer in the house, and I already beat you both!
When an Alembic arrives is far less important than that it arrives. Bradley, you gonna be headin' thru this way?
Bill, tgo
-
And a lawyer who's knowledgable about possession, at that (nyuk nyuk)
Peter
-
yes bill is definitely possessed.
what time are we measuring weenies behind the handball wall?
its gonna come down to this
brad has an extra string and putting that on will cost him.... lmao
-
Hanukkah Harry got you a pair of socks.
And six strings = six speeds. I will beat you.
Bill, I'll be down the 13th - 15th. Email me if you'd like to connect.
-
OH MY!!,
Still following this one Jeff.It just keeps looking better and better (he said, understating massively).May you be together very soon.
Best wishes,
Simon.
-
Looks great already & should be magical when finished completely, Jeff!
Wilfred
-
mica
tried calling today but i guess either you elves were all busy or dee rain is a falling
just wanted to check to see if the curing is done,
ya know
it rained when wolf was finishing up to and we had that one spot that kept soaking up finish
-
Rubout went great. Peeked a shot of Scarlet:
Will keep you abreast of progress once it's buffed.
-
i need a cold shower,,,
oh man am i getting psyched,,,,,
i love that font mica,,,
i see an eye next to the truss screw
-
I see it too. Cool!
-
That eye's just a bit scary Jeff. The finish looks sublime though. Another masterpiece methinks.
Graeme
-
Now that i am in the right frame of mind i agree
when you get your butt stateside you can play with it
-
Lookin' good, Jefe.
-
feelin good brad!
-
Well Jeff
I completely forgot about this project (how could I ...shame on me)
It seems to turn out right!
A new classic (mmmm I said that before)

see my email please and THANKS!!!!!!!
:-)
i will be waiting by the front door thursday
-
Hey, Flaxx!
Did ya get any sleep last night? I'd say not!!! The wait is almost over, and fun soon to begin! Congrats on a WONDERFUL new instrument, and I hope you, Scarlet and Wolfie have a great Holiday season and live happily ever after
Congratulations!!! Mike, Tho
-
Deep breaths Jeff. And make sure you put her down for long enough to tell us how she looks;-)
Graeme
-
Flax & Bradley:
Congrats on nice Xmas presents for you both. Of course I had mine WELL in advance of Hannukah! hehehehe
Bill, tgo
-
the race isnt one by the swiftest as you know all too well
right bill.......
hey clemens did steroids- what a shocker
-
Are you trying to say you and/or Bradley can outrun me? lol As for Clemens and the rest, a review of ALL of the players on the list could support an argument that steroids actually don't help much. Marvin Benard? F.P. Santangelo? And no current or beloved Red Sox on the list composed by Red Sox Board of Directors member George Mitchell. What a surprise!
Flax is dreaming of a qcb Xmas
Bill, tgo
-
Well, Jeff, I guess if you get the bass today I'll have to concede. I'm looking forward to photos.
I want a recount.
-
Hey Jeff,
Can I trade you front doors today?lol Actually my dealer has been officially notified and Mica has indicated on my thread that I should be next after you. Or as Clemens said to Barry Bonds on the way to jail, after you, I'm first!
Right about now you should be out in the front of your house looking back and forth for the Big Brown Truck. Or if you are like Jim Tussing and I you might be driving around town trying to find the truck!.
That's kind of what happened to Jim as he was on his way to the gig, he couldn't wait home any longer and he wanted so bad to play his new bass at the gig. He actually ran into his UPS driver, pulled him over and got his bass, took it to the gig and got to play it! Awesome story, ha?
The same thing kind of happened to me when I ordered my first Koa bass from Carvin. I saw the UPS truck at the mall and went in and found my driver (who is my friend by the way). He graciously went out to the truck and got it for me. It saved me five hours of it riding around in his truck as I am almost the last on his route at around 5 p.m. everyday and this was actually like 9:30 a.m. So more than 5 hours.
On other occasions I've tracked items on the internet and called or gone down to the UPS outlet and picked the items up before they were loaded.
Almost everything here in Hawaii is shipped so I've got it down to a science if I really want something bad enough. Hahaha
Well, flax if you don't answer me I kind of know what's going on so good luck buddy on a beautiful arrival and a BEAUTIFUL BASS and a great weekend!!!!
AAAllloooohhhhaaa, Paul da plumber.

mica
took a nappy like erik and woke up 7.04

like any of us care who finished when
am i done yet? ho ho ho
patience is holding on to wolf or playing my classico while i wait
is it done yet? oh sorry i asked that already
-
I got your email - I didn't respond since you were just confirming what I left in my phone message. I don't want to be guilty of the never ending email trail.
Fax was a riot, and Erik was napping when it came in.
It's a 5-string .050 .070 .085 .105 .132, these must be yours.
Before everything gets loaded:
Enjoy!

oh crap
where are the flaxinator controls?
lol
looked even better when i flipped it on its side in adobe
real proud of my clamshell design
thanks

I think it looks hot now!

Hey, I spied a bass when I went to the shop:
Wow, this looks nice:
Good enough to eat!
I'll let you remain vaguely discomfited at the idea that I actually licked your bass, Jeff.
-
Hey Jeff, I see you're getting the new phantom pick up option. Cool!
Bill, tgo
-
What's the phantom lick up option?
-
What a stud-
And did it keep on tickin?
Ya and by the way, what is the phantom PICK up option?
Another one of those unlisted options?
Pablo
-
brad
who dresses you? lmao!!!!!!!!!
you go to alembic to pick up coco bolo basses and wear a red sweater?
but it looks good in photo 1 with the maple lam
the phantom pick ups are the same as the phantom controls....and strings
thanks so much for the photos bradley
very much appreciated
baby ships tuesday latest
i will never polish the part you licked
-
Jeff,
I have some more photos. Be on the look out.
-
send some to me home email
this way i dont get the reduced file size
thanks b
-
is it soup yet?
-
alas poor yurik.......
seems one of the elvis' had too much egg nog and dropped one of my pickups. no damage to the pickup or more important the wood cover. needs some tidying up on the finish and there is time needed to cure
so if not this week - def next wed
maybe hanukah harry will make a late appearance sat at my step kids house?
-
Egg nog indeed! Here's that back view I was telling you about on the phone earlier today:
and those kinder, more gentle bridge saddles:
-
is that a new style saddle? i wasnt expecting this at all, swweeeeeet
looks neat
boy that is some luster on the back mica
i love how it gets dark at the edges
-
was it egg nog
or egg weed?
lol
-
A coupla more pictures so you can really see what's going on with your bass:
The saddle is made the same way as usual, just the traditionally square ends of each are lightly filed to round them off a little so they won't scratch your delicate mitts when you play over the bridge like you do. Glad you like it!

boy great job on the layouts...
tell bob i said thank you- to me it all starts with the layout and cutting
the truss rod looks like 2 boobies with the screws on-lol
the controls came out perfect!!!! i need to ask roger if he has enough to make q switches
the back?
so much color/grain variance. the horns...little things like stopping the tummy cut where it is,.
but i gotta say it first- does the center of it remind anyone of a certain part of the female anatomy=or is it my warped perverted mind? feel free to answer yes for both
good thing i didnt name this one FRED...
lol
after careful consideration
:
:

YES
I THINK I WILL TAKE DELIVERY...
will give you a call thurs p.m.
see if we can give fri a shot...
pretty please with latkas on it?
:=)
-
Mmm... latkas... starchy... yummy...
Scarlet's sure an incredible beauty, and a unique Alembic. And I love the hard core custom electronics package.
Hopefully your finger has healed well, and will be up for the rigors of extensively playing this awesome new bass when it arrives!!!
Mazel Tov!!!

Oh
My
God!!!!!
This just gets better and better Jeff!

the controls need their knobs mark
although i kinda like the look also-lol

with led's and am getting q filter and selector covers also
thanks graeme- wait til they throw on the woodcovered pu's
-
Dang!!,
This bass HAS to be a future COTM.Looking more stunning by the day.
All the best,
Simon.
-
I'm guessing jaws will be dropping like crazy any time you take Scarlet out of the case
How the heck are you going to decide whether to play the Dire Wolf or Scarlet... Although I bet that's a choice just about anyone here would love to have to make on a daily basis like you're about to!
Merry Christmas!
Todd
-
TODD
THAT IS A DILEMMA OF HUGE PROPORTIONS.
IF I AM GIGGING OUT- PROBABLY BOTH ALONG WITH BRINKS SECURITY..lol
mica and i were talking about that tonight. wolf is a very special sounding alembic. in micas own words,, everything came together perfectly and it has this particular growl/punch to it. billy lbesq has heard it,
we always wonder what its gonna end up sounding like. mica does the test drive since its the only 5 string she can play
so figuring this will sound different it will depend on my mood.
but of course this will need a good break in period
mica may send me a high res photo. if any wants to see it- just shoot me an email.
i didnt launch tonight as pauls needed to go out, and had priority today. so maybe tmew, def next wed
-
Oh My God Jeff!!!
the controls need their knobs mark

This thing is going to be awesome! I didn't know you were getting wood pick-up covers and all these nice knobs, etc.
Wow, this instrument is going to be Titslol, (like your truss rod cover)haha. I saw that! Pretty funny/cool.
Aloha, Paulo
-
Not quite early enough for UPS, but looks like a reliable ship date of Wednesday:
So be ready on Friday. I'll email you details.
-
That is pure hotness. Pure pure hotness.

Boy oh boy Jeff! Those pups and truss rod cover look amazing. In fact the whole bass looks so nice I might have to come over there with one of PaulTBO's stockings ;-)
Graeme

The pickup covers turned out great!

Congrats to you!
Now after completing the ultra=customs, us little guys can expect some elf time from Santa Rosa.
Play it in good health and good luck putting your group together.
-
the eagle has landed
i will be moseying over to ups to pick it up shortly
thanks danno
good luck with yours
am interested to see how those off angle pups come out

Moseying; yes, take your time, enjoy the scenery, maybe stop for coffee and browse the aisles at a bookstore.

This needs to be televised. I WANT AN UPDATE!
-
i actually did mosey,,,i had my coffee and cigs first. the ups lady was a hoot. she first said i couldnt pick it up til 6pm. then she said there was no box this size in the pu pen. Then she said oh i know where i put that. its expensive isnt it. uhh yea kinda, she takes me over to a locked jail pen and there she be. then goofs on me not looking like my drivers license. then she had 2 guys carry it out to the car for me.
--------------------------------------------------
I waited til 12.20 to open it, cause i know somewhere its 4.20 and thats the only way to open an alembic
ok- so... alembic line 101
GOD DAMN IT LOOKS BETTER THE PHOTOS!!!!!!!!
I dont know where to start,,
first off- the finish is amazing. whats underneath on the top looks exactly like bill said, liquid lava. it looks like its wet underneath so that the bubbles in the qcb look like they are floating. amazing depth- totally amazing- like did i say amazing?
the abalones are simply georgeous.
the peghead is a darker qcb that really sets off the brass inlay- another wonderful piece of abalone.
the back is just elegant to me, subtle grains a fair amount of color variation.
the neck- fits like a glove again. the woods look sweet with some nice flameage in the maple i havent matched it to wolf, but why bother-lol
the gold plating was a great last minute idea. the control layout is perfect, the led arrangement of amber on the 5th, 12th, 17th,24th will help me up the neck
i am just thunderstruck. time to head to the basement on plug it in
-
ya know how much i believe in no coincidences
we rotate who opens every week with my friday night friends
gee can you guess who opens tonight?
this is why the higher power didnt want me to have it last week and mele aloha- haha
-
there is something i need to say.,
in case some of you forgot,. this was a remake of the first tribute i had made. there was a booboo obviously and never did alembic point fingers and neither did i.
i just want to thank susan and mica for being so kind. i know they took some kind of a hit moneywise to do the right thing for all concerned. my heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to its production.
-
Congrats, Flax!
Outdoing the Wolf is no easy task... but you may well have pulled it off with Scarlet.
They're both so awesome it doesn't matter.
Hey, I know you said it somewhere... but what exactly are your electronics...? Anniversery plus individual bass controls... or something else?
Just curious.
Congrats again. I don't know if any customer has ever had two of his/her instruments make COTM... but (if not) I'd say you've got a real strong chance of being the first.
Hey... do you hear more of the Coco Bolo sound on Scarlet -since you hear more of the top/back on set-neck instruments?
-
i havent tried them side by side and wolf is very special sounding. its ash and this is mahog core. i think one would have to have the same instrument with diff top woods to discern a difference in woods
this has a rich ring to it. fat ass bottom
the electronics are
2 vol- outside knobs on the clamshell
2 q filters and switches
led switch
master volume pu selector and a rotary bass control
across the top
i dont think it sounds like wolf and it wasnt supposed to, but its not broken in and neither am i on it yet
road testing tonight = got a call for an audition for a dead band tonight- am bringing a scoop to pick up their mouths when they see this lady
i think this may be a good initial way to describe it
wolf is all man and an animal
scarlet is a lady of nobility and grace
-
I don't know how but I missed the final pic on this one. Wow! That is beautiful! Love the QCB and how it's covered with it. No interruptions from the pickups or truss rod cover. Nice.
-
What does the Wolf sound like? I've never played an ash bodied neck-through. Do you notice the ash as much as a bolt-on or set neck?
-
Hey Flax, not a bad looking instrument. The only thing I don't understand is how come you're posting here instead of playing it? Of course with an axe like Scarlet, one could equally wonder why you would be eating, sleeping, or even breathing instead of playing away! Congrats. I owe you a mug, which should be heading your way soon. Then, I suspect, you'll be sending me another in the near future. Have fun tonight. Nicky & I are going to the Warriors/Denver game.
Bill, tgo
-
dave
mica and i were talking about that last week and i need to look at how to get the wolf on the web.
wolf has a definite punch to it- ask-walnut-maple-coco- the walnut adds this
the ash gives it more mid range in my opinion.
i dont have what mica calls the equalizer smile on wolf. has great sustain and thats the neck through
----
thats a question for mica to answer as far as set vs neck through
------
scarlet got a good test run at the studio tonight
it has a definite voice. very clean on the upper end- low rumble bass on the bottom- so many knobs to play with yet. i need to do a slight tweak on the pups. up on the g with the bridge and down on the g on the neck. thats my usual setting. the neck pup is about almost .625 inch below the string and its fn loud. the bridge pup was moved up .375 inch from the bridge to get a bit less highs, that worked fine. i may go inside the electronics one day and raise the output on that pup. one thing i do notice thats different from wolf. this has a little more acoustic for lack of a better term sound. its full and seems to have a bit of compression built into it. its got the heavier guage chromes on it and mica tested it with alembics on it also and is sending me that set to try, i am not a big fan of rounds, but i will give it try when i changes strings
will try to get some photos sat.,
all in all
its plays really fast and is a great compliment to wolf
bill- from your mouth to gods ears, lol
the audition was just ok.,they played everything slow, lets rock, ok! how bout sugaree? huh?
-
After you get scarlet setup to your liking I would LOVE to hear sound samples of you playing each bass through the same rig playing the same songs/riffs. Try to take out as many variables and try to just hear the difference in the basses themselves.
btw - thank you for sending me that hi-res picture! Fantastic!
-
Gorgeous, Flax! Play 'er in good health!
Cheers,
Kevin

Please put one in for me
thanks
we are still moving the q switches away from the knobs yes?
-
You want another knob on this bass
Actually, I'm going to be redoing the control layout next week, so this is good timing. However, I would suggest the dimmer be installed internally leaving the switch outside. With front LEDs, an external dimmer might be useful, but with the side ones, you're more likely to find a setting you like and leave it there.
-
Hey gang, just a thought...
How about a 3-position switch for the side LEDs... off/half power/full power... something like that?
Just a thought, hope you don't mind my butting in, good intentions, yadda yadda yadda...
Of course, this could be in addition to an internal dimmer...
-
internal is fine mica- based on scooter you can turn it down some when installing
thanks
does this mean i have to forget about dummy switches and knobs too?
-
for the record-lol
gold plated hardware please. i assume it includes the nut, tailpiece and bridge
bronze logo for the peghard
thanks mica
its stunning
-
just a little reminder to save some qcb for roger at thg mica
thanks
-
I need to get details from you about the design of the knob to get Roger the right material. Are you putting a cap of one wood and the rest of the knob out of another? Let me know.
-
if we can go solid qcb
thats my preference....
i think it would be the best all around look
thanks
sorry i busty catching my breath.,
;-)
-
I will try and scrounge up enough chunks. They might not be from the same board though.
-
mica
can you call me to go over this before we go to spray and i leave on thursday for vacation
-
Here's a mockup of the Scarlet inlay we discussed last week:
Done to match the placement on DW. That's a fake fret on the top.
-
excellent.....
-
Here's a piece of Coco Bolo that Val had reserved for you. Since Bob is preparing to do the layouts and get wood dust flying an glue smearing, I wanted to see if this was still the piece you wanted:
Your QCB is peeking out below.
-
this was the original top lam for scooter.
it has possibilities but would like to see some of the newer stock very swirly, mid to high contrast on the red side if such a beast exists
thanks
dont think thats a tribute template correct?
reminds me of a gator snout if you lift the tape up
this was a kind of rich red when we acetoned it if i rem correctly- was almost 2 yrs ago
-
Here's the piece untaped as you requested, and I marked a proposed placement if you go for this piece:
I won't be able to show you other slabs until Tuesday, but I've got it marked down so Bob can coordinate with me. I'll post more then if you aren't super thrilled with this one.
I saw the body core cut out and waiting, so once we get the layouts done, we'll be ready to get the body assmebled.
-
lets lay out the other boards
thanks
-
mica
just occired to me you might have to rip the boards to do the layout
not necessary- one half of the bass is fine- my mind will do the rest
any way of removing the marks running across one of the boards
thsnks
would like to wrap today if possible so we can get started.
-
Here's the two boards. 7521:
and 7522:
If you want to try and wrap this up today, we'll have to skip resurfacing. I think you can see pretty well through the chatter in that one region on 7521, at least enough to tell me which board you prefer for a layout line. Let me know your preference.
-
thought you were posting photos with layouts mica
-
Here's the layouts, Jeff:
These are rough and oversize (the chalk adds about a 1/4" all around), but you get the general idea. Let me know which one you prefer. Enjoy!
-
7521 my dear
its a bloomim onion
but the bloom follows the outer edge very nicely?
-
We ready to rip this board. In your last post, are you asking us to reverse the template on 7521? I'm not sure I understand.
-
we'll go over the tracing before cutting yes?
-
Here's a rough shape outline that catches what I think are the most interesting parts:
Let me know if you like it.
-
Wow.
If I might intrude-- I wonder what it would look like with the board flipped (i.e. straightish stuff towards the center)?
Bradley
-
can i see the outline with the bout on the right side?
maybe brad is on to something
can we take a pic with his suggestion?
-
I like it this way, but either way will be amazing. This board is ridiculous!
-
Flipped:
I really think all the cool stuff is over on the left side of post 4495. I'll draw another set of lines on here if you can't visualize the region, just let me know.
Also, please note that this is an oversize rough-cut of the core for your bass used as the guide. The actual size will be a tad smaller.
-
this is not an easy board to imagine mica....
-
i know i am a pain bit may i bother you for a bouts on the right layout
-
Flax,
I gotta say-- put the straight in the center.
Bradley
-
For what it's worth (maybe nothing) I think the way it's laid out in Mica's post 4514 above is much better looking than the way it's laid out in your post 1461 above.
Mark
-
appreciate the feedback guys
mica is going to lay out 1461 with the bouts on the right side and we will make a decision from there.
problem is- they can see the boards better than we can. another set of very experienced eyes likes the first also
-
(http://club.alembic.com/Images/631/39269.jpg)
-
i think all the really good stuff in this setting is at the edges. my hand will cover one side and the electronics would cover the otehr
i sharpened the photo in adobe
-
Flax:
It's all good - outstanding piece of wood! My favorite is directly above (1464). It almost looks like a natural sunburst and I like the wider dark part in the lower bout.
Bill, tgo
-
Flax,
With all the stuff going on in that board, I'd try to get the high resolution versions of the pictures.
I'm sure that if you ask nicely...
Bradley
-
Here's the photo you requested:
You'll have to dodge the previous lines, but I still need them for reference in case you select one of them, I'll have the same spots. Here's some levels adjustments and unsharp mask which looks like you were doing in Photoshop:
Even with a hires photo, these snapshots of a sanded surface aren't going to reveal all that's going on in the wood. You won't be able to see what the experienced eyes can see in person and predict about what it will look like when finished. I can email you a high res photo if you like, Jeff, just let me know (I don't send uninvited large attachments).
-
Wow, there ain't a bad choice in the bunch! Must be terrible having to make such a tough decision, eh Flax? I think I'd probably go with the last one, though. Great googly moogly, what a board!!! Mica, do you think you could set some aside until I win the lottery?

pete
you have know idea
for 250 bucks i should fly out to see it
well we can eliminate post 1464- sorry brad- you'll just have to buy your own
(http://club.alembic.com/Images/631/39286.jpg)
-
mica
you know i usually defer to the eyes on sight
but you can send me a high res and give me some feedback
-
Ha! I did buy my own. Just not quilted cocobolo.
I feel like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz- someday...
Here's to hoping you get exactly what you want.
Bradley
-
Thanks to all for your gracious input. but after seeing the hi res mica sent me, i have made my decision
i am getting the first alembic rectangular shaped bass!.
ok
have chosen the last setup - bouts on the right.
i gotta say it was really really hard. some spots i lost a little and others i gained.but ultimately i liked the way the v shape meets on this layout at the center edge more than the the other way
there is no wrong position on the slab.
and man it is frkn quilted up the gazoo
also switched to qcb for the peghead front and back if there is enough left over
anyone who wants to see the high res- shoot me an email
now for the back woods
thanks mica!
-
I like the grain in what's going to become the upper horn and also the very dark wavy line that follows the curve of the bout. You'r one very lucky guy Jeff.
graeme
-
lets ditch the skylark edge and go with standard
body carve and modified tummy on back
i want to highlight the qcb. the maple lam should do that
thanks
-
Should have registered this earlier, but I marked the work order to use the regular roundover like we discussed on the phone.
-
and we will work out the tummy cut?
-
The tummy cut will be chalked in before we carve any of it away. You cen then decide how big you want it.
-
I'll refrain from making my snarky comment about the size of the tummy cut.
-
good idea........
lol
-
I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole with PH and Ebony lams.
