Most of the specs are settled, but I hear that we are deciding on the tailpiece(s) soon. Here's those mini-birds Val told you about:
This is Tony Stoufer's personal guitar. He makes all the pickups here.
Mike finished these with a crosshatched brushed texture. We're brainstorming for ideas on placement - thinking zig-zag, maybe a chevron or all in a diagonal. I think if you want the mini bird tailpieces, a mini-bird inlay or two on the fingerboard might look really sweet - maybe just at the twelfth fret or something.
-
oooooo, that thing is nice. are those pickups rick shaped or standard series shaped? (that thing sortuv smells of rick, in the very best way)
12 string bass eh? Garz guitars has pictures of a couple of fretless double course 6 strings. i like the idea. the more the merrier.
-
I believe the shape of the pickups is Alembic. The guitar is definitely Rick-inspired. I saw it being built, it got started just before I came to Alembic & Tony just took it home recently. A sweet guitar.
Valentino
-
Aaaaaah, those mini-birds are sooo sweet! I can see a custom 6-string bass with mother bird in the middle holding 4 strings, and two mini-birds on each side of her holding one. That would be really special!
Wilfred
-
Yes, I believe the birds will be fine. I'll take'em! I just hope they don't peck-off the finish when they get hungry. They can create a lot of damage in large numbers, you know. I mean.....I saw Alfred Hitchcocks The Birds......pretty frightening.
Any assembly / assemblage as of yet?
-
Not yet David,
we're still reeling from the avalanche of orders we got the last 2 months. The bass should enter production next week, I believe.
Sorry I wan't able to return your call, but these days I feel like have a phone grafted to my ear, it never ends!!! But boy, it's fun...
Your power supply should ship next week.
Valentino
-
Thank you greatly for everything. You is da best! ~David
-
David,
Can't wait to see the production start for your Alembic. Watching these pieces of art being made in stages is amazing.

Bob wants some advice from you before he chops up the top/back wood you provided:
Next to it are the templates for the body for scale. Bob thinks the central section has the most exciting burl action, with some curly figure along the right edge. He wants to use the central portion of the wood, unless you have a strong preference for another region.
If you've got Photoshop available, you might want to try moving the top layer around on this file:
-
Here's the other side of the wood:
Dead center has the most burl clusters - the pronounced grain along the right edge of this picture is clearly very interesting as well.
-
Hence, I believe we have a front and a back in consideration of the thickness of the ol' block of wood. How many splits can we make? Are the two sides the same color or is that a color type-o? I would like the redder (is that a word?) to be that of the top. What happens when it is split and we find more visual goodies inside? That which is left over becomes the head-stock front and back, yes? Please advise. Tag, you're it. Love, David
-
(http://club.alembic.com/Images/631/19216.jpg)
Got some nice flamey and burley action here!
I adjusted the color a bit - these office lights don't doa thing for wood! This is closer to what it looks like to me
(http://club.alembic.com/Images/631/19218.jpg)
Yet closer in for some of the idea of the burl clusters.
Another color adjustment needed (Message edited by mica on June 16, 2005)
-
Here's Bob with the slab, so you can get a sense of scale:
-
Ahh....very nice. I love salmon. Those Fillets will last me a few months if I freeze them. I will prep some garlic and get the correct utensils ready.
Are you splitting each of these blocks again for consideration of a front and back? What does the back side took like?
-
We've only sliced off enough for one laminate, I think the right half in the picture is the thicker one, ready for more resawing. The bookmatch is the of course what I took the picture of (backside won't be bookmatched).
The wood seems fairly similar throughout, so if you candirect us to the areas if figure you want included, we'll make the next slice and mark them up for you.
-
It appears to me that the lower-most and middle parts of the block has the most action or at least I find the most interesting. I am seeing the body upside down with the horn on the bottom right. Please advise if you see it differently. Wish I could see this with some ace-tone on it. Perhaps that is not so important. No matter what, I really dig this piece of wood.
-
Will 'tone that wood for you shortly. In the meantime, wouldn't you like to see how that swirly Macassar Ebony fingerboard turned out?
Wow!
-
Wow is right!!
-
.....A rather visually deadly combo! All great stuff to see and further dream about. Thank you for your time and effort to satisfy my curiosity. As you can well imagine, I can hardly wait!!
-
I wonder what time it is? My watch batterie has died and the sun has gone down.
-
Other parts in the works, like the template for the first 12-string Knobby:
Let us know how you like it.
-
Must. Suppress. Urge. To. Order. New. Bass.
Where will it stop?!?
Brad
-
LIKE IT? ABSOLUTELY!! WOW! How wide is the area closest to the nut? Is that the anticipated width or will it modified to what ever it is or becomes? Is the knob the same size as my Lion's knob?
-
This one's gonna be spectacular! Congrats David!
-
Must. Suppress. Urge. To. Order. New. Bass. Ditto. LOL!!!!
-
Thank you...thank you, one and all. I'm really looking forward to the cutting, design and placement of the fine Redwood that will be used on this creation.
-
When this one gets finished I'm going to need one of Paul TBO's stockings!
John
-
I'm gonna open an Internetstore! For special clients I can do a list with possible banks to rob in their neighbourhood.
Hehehehehehehehehehehe
PTBO
-
After we spoke yesterday, Bob said it was fine to slice open the Camatillo.
I think the other stick can get sliced in a couple of days.
-
ah no....i don't thique this piter isof a Bob. i go back and look. may be dare iz to Bobs'. some thique iz VERRY rong hear. i all so thique the board iz to wide.

Ooooh. Want some.
Graeme
-
As beautiful as that is, the fretboard is still my favourite part of this bass.
-
Man, I cannot wait to see this finished.
-
Wow
-
Everyday this one inches closer to completion:
Bridge on!
-
This bass is so cool that when the full picture of the finished bass arrives, all of our monitor screens will explode...
-
Wow! Good work Mica. Doesn't this have the look of elegance? Quite deadly on the visual plane I would say. Can we get a picture of the 5 pin jack? It's hide-and-go-seek is given back six picture posts. I don't believe I've ever seen one mounted there.
Thank you. ~David
-
This bass is giving me bad pains of need.
Where are my stockings?
Bradley
-
Stockings indeed. This is my dream instrument!
John
-
The hammer finish on the bridge and tailpiece looks stunning.
-
I agree, the hammer finish is great. This bass is going to be incredible.
OO
-
i got to see this one in person on the tour this month. It was simply amazing, the fretboard to the that sweet hammered tail piece. incredible
-
More pictures please.
-
More or less finished:
Actually, everything's done, but we are waiting for the new octave string for the C. For the 36 scale, there's too much tension on it - Le Yipe!
As soon as the new strings are here, will get them on this bass and get this bass to you.
You asked about the weight - I got about 14 pounds. So it's not the heaviest one we've ever made, but it's certainly no featherweight.
-
Wow!!! I didn't know that this bass has 36 scale until now. The sound should be realy monstrous!
Toshiaki
-
Wow! Beautiful! Congrats!
-
That picture makes my tummy feel all fluttery.
A truly amazing instrument.
Bradley
-
And Mica,
Do you keep omitting the headstock shots just to torture me? It's worse than waterboarding!
Bradley
-
That one gives the Lions Roar a run for its money.
Must be one of the most beautiful basses you have made. Stunning.
-
David, Truly an piece of functional art worthy of coveting by anyone from the most skilled to the new initiate. If I was in another type of group it would be a 12 not a 10 for me. Congratulations on an instrument of a lifetime. May it inspire and delight you and I thank you for sharing it with us on these pages. Play it in great health for many, many years to come.
-
Amazing.
-
Thanks everyone for your comments and sentiments. It is nice and wonderful to hear that this project is worthy of your posts. This instrument is certainly a 'looker'. Can't wait to see more pix (back, whole instrument?) and in conclusion, to actually get this in my hands to create. It is very exciting, no? In the meantime, I wait in frazzled anticipation and quietude.
Danno: Yo man, How do you think this would sound on your El Whappo Jr.?
-
Beyond stellar. The tonal palate you will have at your fingertips will be beyond the dreams of avarice. I've played Tripp's wide 8 and this should surpass it in sustain and deep tone.
The Accugroove (to me ) is a very uncolored sound, no controls for tweets and mids, each component is separated from the others. Full sound that is reproduced not enhanced.
-
wow, what a sound machine! i love the fretboard, the tailpiece, the wood, the electronics, the scale length, the number of strings... such a complete instrument! i would love to hear it!!
-
Here's a couple more pics:
-
That is beautiful... as I lift my jaw off the desk...
Congrats David, Play it Healthy!
Art
-
Absolutely stunning. This is such a 'complete' instrument. There's not a single aspect that lets it down. You're one lucky guy David!.
graeme

Well, the weight might pull you down, but other than that....
Definitely COTM material.

Greg
-
Wow!!!
Can this be the next Featured Custom?
Pretty Please!
Anyone else see a bearded face on the back?
-
I saw it. Reminded me of The Shroud of Turin.
-
Looks kind of like this:
-
Is that an Elfwich cookie?
Mike
the hungry one
-
Looks like....Never mind.
-
That's not a beard, he's putting his hands together in prayer or supplication.
-
Wow. Wow. I'd love to hear it. Wow. I fear I'll need more than one stocking for this!
-
What are the woods on this beast?
-
Hi Bernard, welcome to the board! The fingerboard is Macassar Ebony. I believe the top and back are Burl Redwood. The neck is Maple, Purpleheart and Ebony. I think the main body is Purpleheart with Maple accent laminates between it and the Redwood. And I'm thinking the headstock top and back laminates are the Burl Redwood as well.
-
Thanks a lot. That sounds like one tasty hippie sandwich.
-
The fingerboard is Camatillo.
Bradley
-
I went back and reread the thread; you're right, I stand corrected!
-
Ah oh...it's on its way.
(Message edited by bigbass on July 14, 2009)

Now, ______this is really an instrument that I would like to hear !
-
If this does not make Featured Custom, I don't know what will.

I got to SING!
Just once in a lifetime
A man knows a moment
One wonderful moment
When fate takes his hand
And this is my moment
My once in a lifetime
When I can explore a new and exciting land
For once in my lifetime
I feel like a giant
I soar like an eagle
As though I had wings
For this is my moment
My destiny calls me
And though it may be just once in my lifetime
I'm gonna do great things
I seen that bass in person, and it's a huge work of art that's un-describable in words. PURE REGAL, AND TAKING NO PRISONERS... THIS BASS IS SMACK-DOWN-DROP-DEAD-DANGEROUSLY-LETHALLY BEAUTIFUL.
Perfect 10 - I want my coffee mug of this bass!
(Message edited by hendixclarke on July 15, 2009)

Bob said it was OK, then Val was kind enough to be my model.
Too wide? I thought you wanted a 6 inch wide fingerboard with no taper
-
i laff so hard and for so long, i start to get a head ache.
-
Val looks like he's about to start playing it!
-
Is that for the fingerboard? That is just plain wacky looking (you know, in a good way).
You're not keeping the swirly macassar? I almost had a heart attack when I saw that; it was so cool.
Brad
-
The macassar is not big enough for my finger board. Had to find another piece. David
-
That camatillo is pretty cool looking, I just thought that the macassar would be more contrast to the bird's eye maple.
Camatillo looks all melty, though, which is really cool.
I do have to say that your headstock is totally awesome.
Brad
-
I've never played a dual-course bass with the big strings on top. Why do people build them this way? I know that you're going to get more attack on the big strings, so is that the reason? Most 8-strings and my 12-string have the small (octave) strings above the big ones, but Rickenbacker 8's were strung as this one, and I think some of JAE's 8's were as well...
And yes, your headstock is totally awesome.
Thanks,
John
-
Hello John,
generally, if you play with a pick, you 'll want the big strings on the bottom, but if you play with fingers you're likely to want it the other way around, because otherwise you may just hit the low string and miss the high string completely.
Valentino
-
Oh. Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. I play with my fingers mostly, even though the big strings are on the bottom. I suppose I flay a lot and that's why I can still bash them all. Now that my curiosity's piqued, I suppose I'm going to *need* to play this bad boy when it's finished. First I need to befriend David...
David, old buddy....
John

......Yessss?

Another contender:
In the stack, you can see how the sapwood gets smaller the deeper you cut in the board.
Here's the first slice with the best chance of getting sapwood. Still, I think we can only catch it on one side because in this picture:
With a 6-string fingerboard template as a reference, it can miss it entirely. Now, the 12-string is a little wider, but not so much that both sides can catch the sapwood.
-
All very nice and different from each other. I will need some hints / guidance as to what you think works best. At this moment, like'm both. Is it possible that the color may be a little off and thus, attract the wrong choices....especially with the picture post above? (Help me, Spock, Help me) Does the camatillo have yellow in it? Does the catalox contain purple and brown in it? Can we expect the purple to go brown in time? Is the sap wood like a maple color or a light pale manila? Is it standard practice to oil these kinds of fingerboards and how will that effect the color of the board? Will my redwood be more similar in color to Paul's Burl Redwood Bass or more like a redish maple? I was planning a satin finish on the body....if that helps. The answers to these questions will certainly enhance my ability you make a choice.
What next?? ~David
-
After Valentino spoke with you, he and Chip prepared these for you:
-
The Camatillo is the one. Let the fun begin.
-
Here's the serving suggestion for cutting the board:
-
Note that this picture is oriented with the nut end down.
-
Chopped!
This one is turned around with the nut at the top, and it's got the radius.
-
Wow!!
-
I'd get lost in it. But then, I get lost a lot. Very pretty. I can't wait to hear this baby.
John
-
Hmmmm.....What a baaddd little boy! Very nice and thanks for the post/update.
-
Is this gonna be the fretboard?????
Pfeeeeeiiiiw
FAR OUT MAN!
PTBO
-
That is going to look really cool. Has me wondering if there will be any fretboard inlay.
-
That last picture looks so much like a Toulouse Lautrec nude ... or a Schiele - depends on your state of mind, I guess.
-
That's funny.....I see a babe...and what is she doing....?
Hmmm....
No Bob, no inlay on this fingerboard. I think there is plenty going on.
(Message edited by bigbass on February 22, 2006)

I see her too and she's ... let's just say she's checking to make sure nothing is missing! This is quite a fingerbroad, I mean board. LOL
Bill, tgo
-
I am glad - that wood needs to be seen!
-
There have been a lot of smokin' going on FAR OUT indeed
PTBO
-
Just the occasional glass of wine, Paul, not to worry.
-
Ah, she's not a fingerboard...but an impression of a fingerboard!
-
...a fingerboard?
(Message edited by bigbass on February 24, 2006)
-
I would be anything but bored...
Butt board??
-
If this is the fingerboard, I can't wait to see what the rest of the bass will turn out like! After a fingerboard like this you know the rest of the instrument will have to be some kind of looker!
-
Sometimes looking is a choice. Ask your girlfriend/wife about that one. In any event, thanks for thinking of looking. If you are single, disregard all of the above.
-
Fingerboard is in place and the peghead is cut:
Chip also pointed out the stack of wood that will be the top, back, and plates the body:
-
WOW...this is impressive! What happened to the redwood? This looks like walnut. This is just a color correction glitch, right?
Amazing and thanks for de update.

Lams getting their bookmatch to center glue action:
Yes, sanding the wood can make it look less lovely. I especially notice it with the Maples. Also, the lighting is different in each shot. The one from the 10th is taken pretty late at night with only the overhead shop lights. It will look much sweeter with the clear coats.
-
I don't think I've ever seen this step in any past postings; At least not like this. Great shots! Fass-in-ate-in... as Popeye would say.
-
This getting awful pretty. David, I *BEG* you to be careful when you receive the bass. That 12 string headstock looks awfully long and I'd hate to see this bass go back to Alembic for headstock repair!
-bob
-
Here's a nice picture:
It's the stack of all your continuous wood plates clamped between polycarbonate sheets awaiting their next step. It looks like a flower. A big woody, gluey, clampy flower.
-
Spring seems to have finally arrived in California!
-
Here's the shot I promised you.
-
How could I have missed THAT in the shop today? It must be hiding!
-
Oh my god!!!! What an amazing fretboard!!
-
FAN-TAS-TIC!
-
Brilliant!
-
HOLY SH#T STAINZ BATMAN!!!
-
Unbelieveable. Incredible. Wow. Don't forget to look away every now and then to give your eyes a break. That is spectacular...
John
-
This is going to be pretty amazing when it's finished. To be honest, it's pretty amazing now.
Graeme
-
David:
Without a doubt the most unique fretboard I've ever seen. In the above picture it looks like it's made of leaping flames! Stunning, amazing, arresting, what can I say? Congrats on an instrument that, I suspect, will be remembered around here for a LONG time.
Bill, tgo
-
That is AMAZING!!!! So many beautiful basses, so little money
-
I echo Bill's sentiments. That is the most unique fretboard I've ever seen...inlays or no inlays. My fingers would need a roadmap to find their way on that thing.
-
That fretboard is the coolest thing ever!
-
OMG! 'When it rains......' I don't think I've EVER seen anything like this before. Am I repeating my self? Apparently I had no visual idea what we were creating. What does its back look like (Dah!)?
Thanks guys for all your cheering on & positive re-enforcement. I hear ya!
May the Wand of Alembic continue to do its magic.
Thank you Mica and Valentino.
-
Such an amazing fretboard! Almost seems a shame to put frets in it! Surely, no fret markers?
-
Yea, I agree. At this time dare's Nutt'n on da front (markers)....Just on da sides. Gosh, It would make a nice fretless board.
-
That is indeed a pretty amazing fretboard!!
-
its like black and white fire!
-
Wow!!!
-
....a burnt but well seasoned figerboard for all occasions....
Think I'll wait 'til the smoke rises.
-
That Fretboard is absolutely fantastic!!!!! Can't wait to see it finished.
-
Just incredible. That fingerboard is out of this world.
-
Beautious!
-
Has any body seen a picture of the back of this lately?
-
Yes, the back is pretty, like the front. Peter was working on fitting the plates today when I took this snapshot:
And so you can see the back of the body, I swiped it away for a couple of minutes to take these:

That is truly beathtaking. This instrument will be stunning congratulations.

Wow. That is some amazing wood, it looked great without the finish- now it's absolutely stunning.
Imagine once the tape comes off that fingerboard!! Congratulations on this one-
-
Quite amazin. Looks like she's a real mutha! Vander's never cease. Thank ya for the post.
-
Wow. Absolutley stunning. The wood looks like, something I can't very well describe.
-
Found the backplates mid-prep:
And also saw your bass in steup, already fretted:
-
Beautiful bass. The crew is finishing a 10 for me now. Down the road would like to exchange notes on the overall sounds between the series elecs in this one and the aniv i'll have-- for future ref of course.
-
Beautiful instrument. Does it have a 36 scale?
-
Yes, it's a 36.
Valentino
-
Will it have a standard tuning of B-E-A-D-G-C with octave strings?
-
There will be no mistaking that fingerboard for any other one. Absolutely beautiful.
Rich
-
Yes, standard 6 tuning with octave strings.
Valentino
-
Well I'm back. This is a stunning combo of contrast with the body and fingerboard woods. I wonder, will the finderboard will be darker after the application of oil (?). Are the frets the thin high profile ones, as they look jumbo-ish? ARE THERE MORE PIX TO BE SEEN (dah!)?
PS: Yea Todd, no problem!!
David
-
This is the rough positioning for the flock of tailpieces that Bob is considering:
Hmm... that last one looks a little crooked in the picture - the intent is for them to all have the same baseline.
With the body shape, the position of the flock is somewhat limited, but hopefully you will like them. If it looks good, Bob will make the actual tailpieces.
-
Any possibility of the high string bird being at the same height as the low sting one? It would be a V formation....Hmmm. You know I have this issue with the string angle after the bridge. I would like there to be a steep angle with the highest strings. Am I gett'n crazy here or what? Does the above example make less difference on the higher strings considering they will be in octaves? Should I even worry about this (Dah)? What about the possibility of four birds as opposed to the three? Would that change anything? Are these going to be regular Alembic birds or something more sculpted? Thanks!!!
-
Hi David, Here's the rounded ends I was talking about earlier today:
I'll ask Bob to map out more precisely for the V formation and get back in touch with you.
-
Hey David, After we spoke today, Mary told me you wanted to see some shots of the back. Well here they are:
I'm mulling over some of the other tailpiece ideas and will be discussing them with James and Bob later in the week.
-
Sure wish I could be there when the orchestra first sees this bass!

Perhaps a little late in the day - but have you seen the bridge on Jean Baudin's Hideous Claw - which is sort of an over-the-top tribute to the Alembic style?
-
Thank you, Adriaan, for the post and the visuals. That's a real artistic and clever looking tailpiece. Nothing is late in this regard.
-
Am I the only one dying for an update on this one?
It's none of my business, but enquiring minds want to know.... =)
-
Spock....Help me....Help me Spock!
(We are waiting for sample mock up drawings of the tailpiece for further direction)
-
I'm looking forward to watching next update on this one too!
Toshiaki
-
Hmmm....Everyone is getting hungry. What a wonderful omen. Thank you Spock!
-
beautiful bass, although I dread to think how long it will take to tune!
-
I actually think it would only be a few moments.
-
I'm ready to see this pup completed! Beautiful instrument so far. Stunning.
-
Thanks for the gingered push!! The tail piece is being created into a model at this time. There will probably be something new to see in a few days to weeks. I, too, can hardly wait.
-
Any sign of progress? Anyone cought any fish...ah...birds or tailpieces?
-
I'd forgotten all about this one! That is so terribly cool. The neck is gi-huge-ic!
-
David and I have been talking on the phone, but I haven't updated the Club yet. Here's a picture of the tailpiece yesterday:
And today it's mounted on the bass for testing the custom wound strings:
So we're still hashing out the finish on the tailpiece. It will be goldplated along with the rest of the hardware, but instead of a big shiny mirror, we are thinking of either a hammered or engraved design. Also, I think a bevelled edge would look cool. Whatever we do, we want to get the decision made soon so this bass can be born!
-
Wow!
-
That tailpiece is not at all what I expected- and yet I totally dig it.
-
That looks bad friggin' ass!! Love it!
-
Wow, I'd almost forgotten about this bass. That's an amazing looking tailpiece and as Toby has said, not at all what we expected after the last discussions.

Another in-prgress shot of the tailpiece:

-
Ahhh....Thank you. I needed that!
-
This is the sample of the hammer finish on a scrap tailpiece:

The tines show you why the hammering has to come first!
We're getting a blank all hammered up for you, and we'll machine your final tailpiece from it.
-
We reworked the tailpiece shape (again!), and all the parts were sent to the plater this week:

Love the hammered look. It's on the face of the bridgeblock, the tailpiece and the bridge rails. Pickups are in spray:

-
A hammered bridge block; now how cool is that!
-
Very nice! So many stunning features. Destined to become a COTM.
-
Smashing!!
-
(rimshot)
Nice one, Adam!
And great bass! Can't wait to see it finished!
-
Thanks Charles, I wasn't even HAMMERED when I thunk it up!
-
A piece of art takes shape
I cannot wait to see this bass
-
You haven't seen this shiny for a while:

-
Beautiful!
-
Beautiful indeed. I'm getting jealous again ;-)
Graeme
-
Wow! Amazing and beautiful plus. Wonders never cease. What a great angle shot of the back. With all that visual depth, what does the front now look like? It is very exciting to know this instrument is moving ahead. Thank you.
-
That's an amazing back.
-
Didn't the original designed tailpiece have double slots for each score of doubled strings? Did something change?
-
Looking at the hammer finish bird tailpiece in Mica's June 13 post, which has double slots, I'd say the fine ridge between each set of slots is not strong enough to take the hammering.
We've seen doubled strings sharing a single slot in the tailpiece before.
-
Single slots weren't successful. Though we did the hammering before the machining (unlike the sample!), there was too much stress on the metal for it to hold its shape in the thickness we need. Doubled slots it must be. Today I have shiny pickups:

and a dull bass:

so everything is chugging along nicely now.
-
Mica,
If you happen to post a shot of the headstock, I think I could die happy. This should definitely make COTM.
Bradley
-
Bradley: Don't die yet! I'm sure a picture of your interested item will surface soon.
-
I've got to figure out a way to get to the Mothership before this one ships. I need to see it in person.
-
Bradley, That's great idea! But my home is too far from Mothership.
-
Toshiaki,
See if you can get a flight to Seattle, and I'll treat you to one of the great American traditions: the Road Trip. It is 811 miles (1305 KM) from my house, and a decently scenic drive. I might even be convinced to take the 101 (coastal highway, and a beautiful drive).
Bradley
-
Let me know if you guys do it - I'll meet you there with my doubleneck! (I'm relocating to the East Bay in January, so I'll be close by...)
-
!!!!
the hammered hardware!!!!!! and just when I thought I'd seen all that Alembic could do!! That has got to be one of the most amazing looks.
-
Bradley and Harry,
I appreciate your very kind suggestion. How wonderful if I could do it! Now I can't be away on a trip but I want to visit Mothership someday.
Toshiaki
-
Yo!!! Mothership People!! Where's da shot of that headstock? I want to see it too> 2? (Also)?
-
Yeah!
**goes to get pitchfork and torch.
-
Double post, sorry.

Not to detract from what is one of the most stunning instruments I have ever seen, but what is going on with that black stuff on the bass in the background of the pic from 9/17? Black finished back?
-
Looks like buckeye burl to me, not a black finish.
-
I agree with Kevin. If you look really closely, you can see Over spray / ragged paint edges around the lower right hand side and overspray in the control cavities, and the neck laminates arre just about showing through towards the top of the body, although it looks like a very dark blue to me rather than black.

Pay no attention to the guitar on the back wall - that's a rejected instrument from the mid-70's that we use for training and experimenting.
Now for Bradley's request fulfilled:

Wow.
need.

Rubbed out, and ready to get loaded:

Other bits accumulating too, like the pickups:

And plates:

-
It's always nice to see pics of this bass!
-
I'd rather see it has been shipped and then hear sound clips... I'm dying to hear this beast.
-
Rubbed out and ready to get loaded... yes, life is good!
Beautiful bass too!
Mike
-
Thank you, Mica, for posting these. It all looks fab and like a fairy tale come true.
-
Seriously dying to hear it.
-
Me too, and it's getting tantalizingly close,
(http://club.alembic.com/Images/631/60181.jpg)
though I already know I lack the talent to appreciate it first hand.
(The humcanceller is getting glued in - those strips of veneer are just temporary spacers.)
-
Mutha MaCree\....NOW THIS IS AMAZING!! I'm so taken by the color and contrast of this picture. Is this the best shot color compensated of the bass? I think so. Can't wait to see the matching knobs. Will the fingerboard be oiled? What is your take on that?
Full speed ahead. Damn the torpedoes.
-
I think my humble digits would be lost in the beauty of that board...
Mike
-
The knobs are in place:
